Brewers Notes: Peterson, Hannahan, James

By Tim Dierkes | November 15, 2010 at 3:22pm CDT

The latest on the Brewers…

  • Rick Peterson is officially out as the team's pitching coach, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Peterson was let go with a year remaining on his contract; Rosenthal notes that the Pirates, Mets, and Yankees have openings.  ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that Peterson will not be the Yankees' next pitching coach.  Rick Kranitz will replace Peterson for the Brewers, according to a team press release.
  • The Brewers have interest in infielder Jack Hannahan on a minor league deal, tweets Rosenthal's colleague Jon Paul Morosi.  Hannahan, 31 in March, hit .237/.340/.374 in 392 Triple-A plate appearances this year while playing all around the infield.  UZR, an advanced defensive stat, indicates he's done good work at the hot corner in the bigs.
  • The Brewers claimed reliever Justin James off waivers from the Athletics earlier this month; Baseball America's Casey Tefertiller digs into the righty's underdog story.
  • A review: the Brewers have eight arbitration eligible players – Manny Parra, Joe Inglett, Kameron Loe, Carlos Gomez, Carlos Villanueva, Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, and Todd Coffey.  Inglett and Coffey are non-tender candidates, in my estimation.  The team's six free agents: Dave Bush, Craig Counsell, Chris Capuano, Trevor Hoffman, Doug Davis, and Gregg Zaun.  Counsell and Capuano are candidates to return.

Yah, I somehow doubt that the Mets will be interested in Rick “I can fix any pitcher including Victor Zambrano. Let’s acquire him for Kazmir” Peterson.

Justin James is definetly one of my favorite guys in the game. I saw him in NY in september on his first day with the Major League team with the A’s, all I have to say is great dude and I wish him the best in Milwaukee.

Quiet on the Fielder trade talk so far, I would expect things to pick up soon. I would imagine if they are going to get something done, they would prefer to do so early in the offseason to know where they stand with starting pitching on the free agent market.

And also if they wait it out, free agent 1B will have already signed with a team, so the market for Prince will have gone down.

But I think the Rangers, Giants, White Sox, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, Nationals have to be interested…Maybe some more than others…

      Some trade ideas…

Rangers: Derek Holland, and Tanner Scheppers
Giants: Brandon Belt, Heath Hembree, and Zack Wheeler
      White Sox: John Danks
Red Sox: Casey Kelly, Felix Doubront, and Drake Britton
Blue Jays: Zach Stewart, Drew Hutchinson, Drew Permisson, and Henderson Alvarez
Cubs: Chris Archer, Andrew Cashner, Yohan Gonzalez
Dodgers: Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster
Braves: Derek Oberholtzer, Freddie Freeman, and Randall Delgado (Zach Braddock goes to ATL)
Nationals: Brad Peacock, Tom Millone, and Brad Meyers.

Archer has shot up the rankings and with Cubs Brass. He is being added to the Cubs 40 man and doubtful he is available. Cashner is not available. I’m not sure what level of interest the Cubs have/do not have in Fielder. Nothing has been mentioned yet.

To be honest, I have no idea. I think the White Sox would definitely be interested, but I’m not sure they’d have the talent to pull a deal off. No doubt, the Brewers would want Gordon Beckham plus pitching. And while I think the Red Sox would make a ton of sense, Adrian Gonzalez seems to be their guy.

If I had to guess, I’d say the Rangers are the best landing spot for Fielder. They’ll add payroll and have the talent to pursue him. Providing that the Brewers offer the Rangers a chance to negotiate an extension with Fielder, I’d say a deal could get done. Prospects are your thing, but the Brewers have states that they’d want two guys that could step right into their rotation, or are at least close to major league ready. I’m sure they’d talk about Scheppers, Kiker and Perez, and they may need to add a position player to sweeten the deal. Moreland?

Well I agree, and that’s why I suggested Derek Holland who is one of Baseball’s premier young starters. Scheppers on the other hand could make a pen or rotation out of spring.

                  And I appreciate it dude

Braves won’t be interested in Fielder. We’ve got six years of Freddie Freeman already and we wouldn’t be able to re-sign Fielder once he hits free agency. Makes zero sense for Wren to do that. Do a little research before you throw an idea like that out there.

Well, I think we’re all interested in Jack Hanrahan, but ultimately his decision is going to be based on who gives him a long-term deal, and the most money.

I would love for the Pirates to get Rick Peterson. He went to my high school and my driver’s ed. teacher was his baseball coach in HS.

I was under the impression that Ray Searage was going to be retained as the pitching coach. He seemed to do a decent job righting the ship after Kerrigan was fired. (Small sample size, of course.)

Your drivers ed teacher is at least in his late 70’s. Peterson just turned 56.

It’s not a coincidence that the Mets had so many pitching injuries after Peterson left. I think he’s a lock to go to the Pirates since his father worked for the organization for many years. Definitely not the Mets since they do want Warthen back.

Low blow and absolutely without any foundation. Peterson was a lousy pitching coach with the Mets, but you can’t blame him for injuries to pitchers anymore than you can blame Randolph for injuries to Reyes, Beltran or Delgado.

I don’t see how it’s a low blow and it’s not without any foundation. If he was so lousy, why were Maine, Perez, and Pelfrey at their best under him? The first full season he’s gone, all 3 are either injured or bad. Peterson studies biomechanics to prevent injuries so he does have an effect on their health. The only reason people don’t like Peterson is they either blame him for the Kazmir trade (which really lies with Franco, Lieter, and Duquette) or they think he’s weird.

i kind of agree with what you’re saying. i don’t think you can deny how valuable peterson was to perez, at least. maine’s thing is mostly a loss of velocity, so i don’t know if you can attribute that to peterson leaving. and pelfrey seems fine under warthen, so no complaints there. none of this matters though, cause i would be shocked if warthen isn’t the pitching coach next year.

That’s just a terrible guess on your part. Niese, Santana, Maine were all hurt this year, who’s fault is that? Should we expect that the Brewers’ pitching staff will come down with arm troubles this coming year or next?
No where has that accusation been put out there, not in the papers, or in blogs or even as gossip, the players themselves have not even thought anything such as that. So for you to post something like that is just not fair and wrong.

And the Kazmir myth is just that, those players didn’t have enough pull to influence Duquette.

It’s not a terrible guess, it’s a fact. I don’t think Warthen has done much with Santana so I wouldn’t blame him. I don’t recall Niese being injured this year. But I do blame Warthen for Maine. How is it that Peterson was able to get so much out of him and Perez? Pelfrey never had dead arm for half a season when Peterson was the coach.

As for Kazmir, Leiter wanted him gone because he was going to lose his spot to him. Franco didn’t like that he played loud music in the clubhouse. Peterson thought Zambrano would make a good project pitcher. So Duquette traded his perceived problem child for a guy his pitching coach wanted. Peterson never said he wanted to trade Kazmir, especially not for Zambrano. He only said he could fix Zambrano after the trade.

You’re making stuff up as you go along. You in reality don’t any facts to back up what you’re saying. Just because you blame some one doesn’t make it so. Have you ever considered that accumulative innings pitched may have contributed to the recent arm problems and not the coach? No one has yet to even hint at what you’re saying, so it’s obvious with all you’re posting you’re just reaching.

As for Kazmir, you’re rehashing a myth that’s been refuted by both Duquette and Leiter a couple of times.
Leiter has been interviewed several times on NY sports shows and has made it clear that he never even approached Duquettte to trade Kazmir. Before he got his own radio program on Sirus XM, Duquette said the reason for the trade was that he thought the Mets were in need of an established pitcher to help them get to the post season right away. Zambrano looked to be that guy. He went on to say that he never took any suggestions from players too seriously, so if Leiter had indeed made that suggestion, it wouldn’t have carried much weight with him.

Finally, Niese was pulled from the rotation 3 weeks before the season ended with ‘shoulder stiffness’, is that Warthen’s fault too?

Peterson may not have helped, but in fairness, that staff he inherited was not that good.
