“MLB Announces 2025 All-Star Starting Hitters”

      So MLBTR.

All position players are to be seen and judged on their hitting….particularly their hitting statistics. That’s all that matters.

      Team wins don’t matter.

There are so many crummy teams in MLB this year – particularly in the AL. Games are impossible to watch anymore.

The analytic/statistic virus has affected almost all MLB FO’s. Just a few teams still play baseball. It’s rotisserie league for real.

The players just care about pushing their brand. The FO’s just care about making every ballpark into Disneyland.

No one cares about the fans. No one.

Hey listen, I see the point you’re making here and I get it. In my opinion the all star game is about rewarding outstanding play for the players (whether we agree with some of the fan voting or not) and allowing the fans to see all of the best players (hopefully) in one spot jumbled together across two teams just to see what happens. Do I think fans should have a say in said voting process? No, not really. We have a tendency to play favorites hence the fan label. But as long as its a glorified scrimmage and some arguably deserving folks are getting the nod. I wont complain about what is essentially a for fan experience. Mainly I only tune in for the homerun derby but thats just me. Long story short in my opinion, the fans are voting for all of the position/dh players yes? Pitching gets determined by the players and the commissioners office correct? So if you’re getting the absolute best pitchers to go against, better choose the best damn hitters you can find, defense be damned in a scrimmage lol.

No, team wins should not matter at all. Why should a player be punished for being stuck on a bad team? This is not basketball, where one superstar can make a team a contender.

Rockies have the least amount of $ allocated into an analytic department in the whole MLB. Look how that’s working. Team wins don’t matter for all star games because it’s about the players. It’s to reward PLAYERS for outstanding play (most of the time) no correlation to team stats. No one cares about the fans? The fans literally get to decide the starters of the game based off their votes as a whole.. There’s no way possible the fans could be MORE involved.

        =====================
I have no idea what you are onto here. There is more parity today than 25 years ago. Right now, we have 6 teams below .450. In 2000, we had 8 teams below .450. That’s the nature of the numbers. Not every team can be above .500.

IRT the AS game, it’s just entertainment. If the fans ignore defense in their voting, well, that’s the way it’s always been. “HR hitters drive Cadillacs” was a saying a long, long time ago.

          Great point, Joe.

To add onto that, I think the technology and scouting has improved to the point where these front offices are essentially in an arms race with one another, constantly making adjustments in an attempt to keep up. The result is relative homogeneity in the standings and improved parity (not brought on by artificially introduced pressures, as in basketball). This, I believe, indicates baseball is at a relatively healthy point.

Moreover, I think it explains why we have recently seen teams that are inexplicably awful in consecutive years (2024 White Sox, 2025 Rockies). When the organization is behind the curve, it really shows given how most franchises have kept pace with one another

The National League certainly has some good shortstops with Lindor, Turner, De La Cruz, and Abrams. No doubt some others, as well, like Betts when he plays the position.

That still just blows my mind, maybe even more than Ohtani being elite at pitching and hitting.

An MVP, First-ballot tracking, championship right fielder is willing and ABLE to play shortstop on the best team in baseball as he’s approaching his mid-30’s.

Like we’ve seen power hitting corner outfields being able to play first base and sometimes third, but for that level of player to just go out and play shortstop is insane.

BB Ref has both with a 125 OPS+.

          Compare their respective Statcast pages:

          baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/francisco-lin…

Everyone wrote him off years ago and the fans could have voted for Trout or something (like Acuna in NL) when they haven’t played for a good portion of the year, yet Baez actually gets the votes and the starting nod.

Gleyber’s problem, much like Gallo, Volpe, Jazz, etc, is very much Gleyber. Completely selling out for pull power and can’t hit anything else.

Now, could it be the influence of good coaching and accountability (Hinch) versus the coddling and “A-for-Effort” acceptance of mediocrity (Boone)? Yeah, I think that’s a part of it too.

Hammering, absolutely right….. when they actually connect. It’s the Yankees hitting in a nutshell – score 12 runs or can’t score at all. Problem in the playoffs is that the pitching is much better, so they don’t often get the homers.

Clip, I tell people all the time with certain guys it’s a between the ears problem too. I saw it a lot in the minors, especially with pitchers.

Some guys never get past that. Good coaching certainly helps if the player takes to it. Sometimes just a different voice does it.

Of course they wouldn’t but that’s like saying the New Orleans Saints wouldn’t start Taysom Hill at QB when they have Drew Brees. (Not a 1:1 comparison, but the point stands)

Lindor is a shortstop. He’s played the position his entire big league career going on 11 seasons.

Betts was drafted a second baseman, came up as second baseman, and moved to the outfield early in his career.

One is a shortstop by trade and the other is an infielder-turned outfielder-turned infielder again.

I’m trying to remember the last great player to retire with more walks than strikeouts, I know Chipper Jones (as a fellow 3rd bagger one of my faves) did, but its increasingly rare if not damn near impossible to find guys who walk more than they strikeout.

Nothing Bonds ever did counts. That is what cheating does for you, makes everyone except the total idiots write off everything you did as just a PED user’s stats.

For me I would really agree with you, however that would also allow the MLB to profit while claiming ignorance to the fact that he used PED’s. Its one of those things that I grapple with, if you destroy the career this career or another user of PED’s had, all of his work and reputation is destroyed and discredited. But what happens to the MLB? They already profited off of said player so why should they care? And that doesn’t seem fair to me. Like if theres no actual indication that a guy used, I could understand, but when theres rumors, speculation, testimony etc. and you sit there and do nothing about it, then everyone deserves to be brought low. Not just the players.

All of his work and reputation is destroyed and discredited. That MLB paid no price for looking the other way when he cheated because it made them money is immaterial.

Personally I levy blame to both sides, theres plenty of wrong to go around. You can’t absolve one side or the other of wrongdoing in my opinion. I don’t regard Bonds as one of the greats personally after the discoveries post career. But I also regard the MLB as a trash organization during those periods that allowed such things to happen with no remorse or penalty to those that used. I think realistically, the way the general public probably views those times will ultimately prove to be for the best. I imagine a lot of folks in general still hold some purity for records, myself included. I.E. Hank Aaron is still the HR King. All I’m really saying is equal blame and responsibility needs to be held.

I think we can probably all agree that he would’ve been a HoF’er without any PEDs. But at the same time we can only guess at when he started using them based on visual body composition changes. It’s definitely not an easy thing to gauge when we are outside of those who are in the know.

It’s fairly well documented that Bonds started using PEDs after Sosa and McGwire in 1998, clear inferior players, garnered all the attention with their HR race to break Maris’ single season record.

Nothing he did counts because we don’t know when he started using PED, we just know he DID use PED. Much like Arod who we found out started using them when with Seattle. Nothing he did in his career counts.

It doesn’t matter what MLB did or didn’t do to prevent PED usage. They were not only against the rules of baseball, they were illegal for players to possess or use. Using them made that player not only someone that was cheating and therefore taking money out of the pockets of those who were not cheating, but also a criminal. 100% its on the PLAYER who used them.

NOTHING Bonds did in his career counts because we don’t know when he started using PED, only that he absolutely DID use PED.

No. We can’t agree on that because we don’t know when he started using PED. It very well could have been in Pittsburgh and he only got better at using them when Balco got involved with his PED regimen. So no. He is not a HOF player. Period. End of conversation.

Only someone so biased as to let subjective feelings interfere with the facts, writes posts like yours.

By Canseco’s own account, McGwire started injecting steroids, with Canseco’s help, in Oakland. In McGwire’s 1st 8 full seasons, ’87 through ’94, ages 23 through 30, he had a 143 OPS+. Over his last 7 seasons, ages 31 through 37, his OPS+ was 183.

By comparison Bonds, in his first 9 full seasons, ’87 through ’95, ages 22- 30, his OPS+ was 163. Clearly a better hitter than McGwire. That’s in keeping with his next 4 seasons, ’96-’99, ages 31-34, when McGwire’s OPS+ jumped. Following the McGwire/Sosa heralded HR race, Bonds in the last 8 seasons of his career, ages 35-42, his OPS+ was 221.

It should be obvious to you when Bonds started using, or at least started reaping the benefits, from the use PEDs, and the instigation of that use If not then you’re more biased, or obtuse than I thought.

Also remember that the Mitchell report, naming 89 players came one single witness, Kirk Radomski. He later stated that he supplied nearly 300 MLB players with steroids. Logic should tell you that if the market was that robust, Radomski wasn’t the only source of PEDs for players.

That’s not counting Clemens, who tried to limit exposure by using a single guy, Brian McNamee. That didn’t work. I hate Clemens probably more than you hate Bonds. I’ve met several MLB players, and former players, Some were exceeding nice, like Jim Davenport, an unbelievably nice guy.. Others like Orlando Cepeda, and Ellis Burks, were friendly and polite. Clemens was one of the biggest jerks I’ve ever met in my life, not limited to baseball. But despite my loathing, and detestation of Clemens, he still belongs in the HoF. Because he, like Bonds, were simply leveling the playing field, since 90% of the pitchers and batters they faced were also juicing.

For my part I just wish there was more of a mark against the MLB as an organization during this time. Most of the court of public opinion is going to be completely against those who used PED’s, and rightfully so. It just irks me a bit when I see only the individual players be the patsy, while other folks in the league reap the benefits with little to no ramifications. Admittedly I’m probably more annoyed that one of my favorite players (Palmeiro) was also involved. I do think the casual and hardcore fans opinion of those times will prove to be true though, it may not be as substantial as a physical or notated mark against both the league and players that were involved in those practices, but at least in the circles of fans they will take those follies into consideration when they judge those times. At least thats what I hope.

Still don’t know why Mo Vaughn took home the MVP in 95 over Gar, Belle & Randy.
Well I do but C’MON MAN, 39 jacks & 126 RBIs, 10 & 13 more than Edgar sealed the race for Vaughn?

Edgar had more games with less at bats and still smoked him in every category that mattes besides HR/RBI but Mo didn’t run away in those stats anyway.
And Mo led league in SO w/150 vs Edgars 86!

The east coast bias doomed both Mariner players that yr. Don’t know why Belle was snubbed but Mo definitely was not the MVP in 95 and he was on the Juice.

After their long rebuild and false starts, they’ve finally come out of it and have a good chance to end the regular season as the American League’s best.

And they actually have a better win percentage against out of division opponents, so it’s not like their wins can be discounted on a soft home division.

That is a claimer. Take Over and Ollie. but don’t put much on him. There are 5, maybe 6 horses entered in that race that have a legit shot of winning.

In the 8th, the Manila Stakes, Zulu Kingdom is the heavy favorite but I think his stable mate Uncatalyzed has a shot at upsetting him. I really like the jockey at that distance on grass. If you want to go with a little longer odds, Capitol Hill who is trained by Bill Mott, gets John Velasquez this race, and was stuck wide in his last race on turf at 1 3/16 mile at Keeneland and still finished 4th.

Capitol Hill did make a nice charge at the end to place just 3/4 of a length back though. Keep an eye on that horse when he has John Velasquez riding him.

@Mets Era there is zero chance Freddie gets booed at the AS game. Zilch. It’s not NY. I’m sure if Pete had left this offseason, made the AS team and if the game was in NY he’d catch a C battery in the head. That ain’t happening in Atlanta. The uniform makes absolutely no difference. He’s on the NL team, was a WS champion with the Braves and Braves fans are smart enough to realize that. We’re perfectly fine with a younger Olson as our first baseman and we still love and appreciate Freddie.

It’s an exhibition. How much credibility does it need?

Bobby Witt Jr was robbed again. Voters need to stop using strictly BA as a voting metric.

      Jacob Wilson has a 138 wRC+.

      Bobby Witt Jr. has a 123 wRC+

Offensively, Wilson is far better this season.

Overall, though, Wilson has a fWAR of 2.9 to Witts 4.0.

Witt is getting a lot more steals and is better defensively and is overall a simply better player.

And people really need to stop getting so upset over who starts an EXHIBITION game with no real meaning other than who the fans want to see.

I hate everything about Oakland-Sacramento-Vegas, but I have 0 issue with Wilson winning out over Witt Jr. Makes up for the fact that Rooker got screwed at DH imo

I am not being a homer here, but Hunter Goodman of the Rockies deserves the starting gig over Will Smith. The only thing Smith has on Goodman is BA and being on a much better team. Goodman leads all NL catchers is almost every category. Hopefully he at least gets the backup job.

Javy Baez over Byron Buxton is an egregious miss

Buxton has a 3 WAR. Baez has a 2 WAR. It’s debatable sure, but it certainly isn’t egregious. Baez is playing gold glove defense at new position, on the best team in AL. It counts for something.

Is this a lifetime achievement award for Baez? His stats would be respectable for a 4th outfielder.

Good stats for sarcasta-bowl but in the real world hypothetical results aren’t what determine who wins the game.

I was being sarcastic. With the injuries to Neto and Neto and Trout early we really didn’t deserve to have anyone voted as a starter. Maybe next year.

It’s crazy how many people are complaining about Lindor getting the start and saying it’s the big market stuffing the ballot. That is not at all a core tenant of the Mets fan base and if you look over recent years that much is clear. The Mets almost never have more than 2 players in the game and rarely have anybody starting. As a Mets fan I’m not saying we deserved a lot more I’m just saying for a large market team we have not had much representation at the game over the years.

There were several early comments about how it should have been Turner or De La Cruz, and that Lindor got it because of big market ballot stuffing. I’m not even arguing player merits because both of them could have (especially Cruz). I just felt like I had to out my 2 cents in when I saw people saying it was just because of the big market effect.

It’s not that black and white. I was one of those that said it should have been De La Cruz, but that’s only as the starter. Clearly Lindor belongs on the AS roster.

And since Lindor is AS worthy, the sheer majority of Mets’ fans to Reds’ fans is significant giving him the start. Mets’ fans are being defensive. Arguing that the Mets’ fans as a whole were just being objective in making Lindor the starter is ignoring the obvious.

It’s disingenuous to say that fans don’t vote for their favorite team’s players when they’re having a good enough season to be considered. Think that Dodgers’ fans wouldn’t have voted in big numbers for Tommy Edman if he was in the top 3, or 4 among 2B?

The Astros just won 5 out of 6 games against the best SP’s of two of your 3 divisions leaders. Maybe “players” aren’t the most important thing.

I’m weird with my all star votes. It’s definitely a “respect the integrity of the game thing.” Even if someone’s having a great first half, I prefer the proven star who’s having just a slightly worse year. Also, the stats they provide for the voting should simply include WAR. To that effect, I was voting for Pena over Wilson, Buxton over Baez (sorry buddy!). Yet despite my standards, I was still voting for James Wood.

Peña is solid but I went with Wilson because it’s nice to see the clear cut leader for the Rookie of the Year award be included in the All Star game.

With the 3rd best record in all of baseball you’d think the Astros would have at least one player selected. Pena and Meyers have had all-star caliber production so far. I get it that we’re not done yet.

The game has evolved into an exhibition for fans to watch their FAVORITE players play together. That is the intent of the game. Seeing people get all worked up over an exhibition game is ridiculous

It’s more than just an exhibition game. It’s recognition for players having a good season. BB Ref lists AS appearances with things like GGs, SSs, and MVP votes. When players go into the HoF the number of AS appearances is listed among the player’s accomplishments. Saying it’s just an exhibition games puts it on par with ST games, or games between an MLB team and their AAA affiliate. It doesn’t count in the stats, or standings, but it’s clearly more than just an exhibition game.
