Gregg Zaun Would Prefer To Sign With Rays

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 9, 2010 at 3:56pm CDT

Gregg Zaun would like to return to Tampa Bay, according to Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio (on Twitter). Zaun said on Bowden's radio show that his first choice is to sign in Tampa Bay, where he played at the end of the 2009 season.

Zaun's 2010 campaign lasted just 28 games, so the Brewers recently declined their 2011 option for the catcher. He hit .265/.350/.392 before he tore the labrum in his right shoulder and missed the rest of the season.

Zaun signed a one-year $1.5MM deal with Baltimore before the 2009 season and a one-year $1.9MM deal with Milwaukee before the 2010 season. The 39-year-old is in line for another one-year deal, but could be available for even less than usual because of his injury-shortened season.

Dioner Navarro probably won't be back in Tampa Bay, but the Rays do have John Jaso and Kelly Shoppach, so they don't appear to need Zaun.

He’s actually not that bad of a sportscaster. . I enjoyed watching him on sportsnet during the world series… if anything he made jamie campbell some what tolerable, which is pretty difficult.

While I agree that Zaun’s analysis was pretty informative and enjoyable, for me it didn’t make Jamie Campbell any easier to listen to. Good thing he let Zaun do most of the talking……. I really can’t stand Jamie Campbell.

He phoned me once when my friend met him at a conference. I didn’t believe it was him until I recognized his stupid laugh. I told him how I can’t stand him and his stupid birthday announcements in the game, among many other things. He said “it only takes a second and it just makes their day.” Pathetic, he was a disaster.

dang, judging by these comments… no one likes Jamie Campbell… including myself…
we should send a petition to Rogers Sportsnet

Jamie Campbell talks like a 90 year-old grandmother, with his “Oh my goodness” type calls. Still, in my opinion, Sam Cosentino is even worse.

And I agree that Zaun is a good sportscaster, I wouldn’t mind hearing him more on Sportsnet.

Good point on Cosentino. His signature home run call – “this one has lift, this one has legs, and this one has left!” – has got to be the worst in the MLB. When they leave the game calling to the clowns at sportsnet you are best served to hit mute and listen to good old Howarth and Ashby. Too bad they don’t exactly sync up to the TV.

sportsnet is just bad in general. And now they have freaking sportsnet1 which ruined this entire season.

I wish they could show it on TSN or something. I hate sportsnet.

You don’t get Sportsnet? I hate the idea, but I can’t stand the TSN coverage either. Rod Black is a joke with his “Baseball’s best cliches” book of sportscasting. I agree with Christian, Howarth and Ashby are the best.
