Rizzo On Willingham, Bench, Payroll

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 16, 2010 at 9:59pm CDT

Earlier this evening, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo updated MLBTR on some of his team's offseason plans:

  • Josh Willingham has said he's open to playing just about anywhere on the diamond, but Rizzo plans to keep him in the outfield. "We see him as our everyday left fielder, middle of the lineup hitter right now," Rizzo said.
  • Rizzo says the Nats are looking for a "makeup" type utility player who is versatile enough to play a number of positions, but there's no timeline for adding such a player.
  • MLB.com reported last week that the Nationals are interested in Willie Bloomquist, Aaron Miles and Miguel Cairo.
  • Rizzo told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he can boost payroll in 2011 "if it makes sense for '11 and the long term" (Twitter link).
  • Agent Alan Nero told Kilgore that Chien-Ming Wang hopes to remain with the Nationals in 2011.

“Chien-Ming Wang hopes to remaing with the Nationals in 2011.”

I don’t know how much ‘remaining’ you can do with a team when you never set foot in the clubhouse… Biggest waste of money I ever didn’t see.

The Nats have some good young pitching in their organization to be excited about, in fact, some of them can and should be trade bait…I’m primarily talking about Sammy Solis, Jordan Zimmermann, A.J. Cole, Robbie Ray, Brad Meyers, Tom Millone, Brad Peacock, Stephen Strasburg, Drew Storen, and Tyler Clippard…I can only see Meyers, Millone, and Peacock being traded…A few are ineligble to be traded and the others aren’t going anywhere…

I’d like to see the Nats package a deal for Matt Garza and sign Jorge De La Rosa…

    The rotation would be

    Jorge De La Rosa
    Matt Garza
    Jordan Zimmermann
    Livan Hernandez
    Jason Marquis

    Some possible deals for Garza…

    Meyers, Clippard, Millone, and Lowrance
    Millone, Peacock, Espinosa
    Norris, Kohn, and Kobernus

By the way…Norris has re-achieved his prospect status…He is currently raking in the AFL and is one of the top players in it.
