Yankees Designate Brian Schlitter For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 14, 2011 at 3:50pm CDT

The Yankees announced that they designated right-hander Brian Schlitter for assignment today to create roster space for Andruw Jones, whose signing finally became official. The Yankees claimed the 25-year-old off of waivers from the Cubs last month.

Schlitter appeared in seven games for the Cubs last year and surrendered 18 hits and five walks in eight innings, striking out seven. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a 3.15 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 45 2/3 innings in his first season at the highest level of the minors.

Chad Jennings of the Journal News heard last month that "Schlitter is built around a fastball that sits around 92 mph and reaches 94-95 with good sink. He also has a changeup and a slider’s that’s “OK” but could get better with a little work."

Some confusion here as some are reporting that it’s Travis Schlitter that was DFA’d. Brian Schlitter appears to be the name of the player in the Yankees org, but regardless, confusing.

A lot of teams including the Red Sox have pitching issues but everyone bashes the Yankees. Why do they always get the schlit end of the stick.

I thought they were waiting to put marte on the 60 day dl to make room for him. I guess Jones camp wanted the signing to be official

so he appeals to his childish side and makes poop jokes with all the “cool” kids? if it’s posted up here people can have an opinion, especially since it was about the reasoning behind this seeing how he saw the possibility of room being made via Marte being put on the 60 DL yeah.

I get people are having fun at SChlit’ expense, but if someone is asking a legitimate question in regards a more important player like A. Jones, then who the hell are you to single him out for? Yeah the main topic is unimportant, but I brought up other point of how much of an A-word (I’m not getting moderated for you) you’re being.

Phillies draft Brian Schlitter; Phillies trade Schlitter to the Cubs for Scott Eyre; Ryne Sandberg manages Schlitter at AAA Iowa in 2010; Schlitter taken off waivers by Yankees; Schlitter DFA’d by the Yankees. The cycle would be complete if the Phillies claim Schlitter off waivers and reunite him with Ryne Sandberg who is now managing in AAA for Schlitter’s original organization, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Is that sort of a “Don’t schlit in the wind because it might come back and hit you in the face” sort of parable?
