I’m pretty sure that Carl Crawford could have replaced Abreu’s leadership with his production… are we really still commending people as irreplaceable because they can “lead their team?” Its a nice asset to have, but I’d take talent over that any day.

I see where you’re coming from, but I still like the article. It’s a gentle reminder that you can’t manage a real team as if it was a fantasy league team: it’s not JUST the stats that count.

I think the Phillies might beg to differ i.e. Bobby Abreu. They traded him for nothing in 2007 and then went on to that improbable comeback, topping the mets after trailing them by 7 games with 17 to play. Phillies fans will tell you that trading Abreu changed the club leadership from Abreu and Pat Burrell to Chase Utley, altering the culture of the clubhouse in the process. Whether we should believe that or not? Who knows…
