Dennys Reyes Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 13, 2011 at 12:58pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Reyes cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A, according to MLB.com's transactions page.

FRIDAY: The Red Sox announced that they have designated Dennys Reyes for assignment. In corresponding moves, Boston placed Matt Albers on the 15-day disabled list and called up Alfredo Aceves and Felix Doubront.

After a month of anticipation, the Red Sox selected Reyes and Albers for their Opening Day roster, preferring them over Aceves, Doubront, Hideki Okajima and others. As GM Theo Epstein pointed out before the season, Boston will need all of its relievers at some point in 2011.

Though Reyes isn't to blame for his team's 0-6 start, he hasn't helped. He has walked two and allowed a pair of hits in 1 2/3 innings spread out over four appearances. At one point in yesterday's loss to the Indians, the left-hander hit two consecutive batters. The four appearances cost the Red Sox $900K, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter).

“At one point in yesterday’s loss to the Indians, the left-hander hit two consecutive batters.”

that was wednesday and it juuuust happened to be the most critical inning of the game. it was pretty spectacular failblog material actually. to review, it’s a one run game. and he is facing the bottom of the cleveland indians lineup:

hits the number 7 hitter (a lefty)

    hits the number 8 hitter

walks the number 9 hitter — who was trying to bunt

true, but it was his second fail in as many chances (walked hamilton in TX) and the recent one was dontrelle-willis-level bad. add to that the fact that he’s a LOOGY who won the job to begin with only because the other dudes had options and, well, yeah. GTFO

Why call up both long relief guys? Shouldn’t they call up a lefty with none currently in Boston?

The reason Oki wasn’t called up (or at least 1 of the reasons) is that he pitched last night.

He’s a reliever though so he can pitch more than one day in a row, and he only threw like a half a dozen pitches.

But if you had a choice between someone who is fresh, or someone just pitched last night, you go with the fresh arm. Keep in mind most of the effort involved in coming in from the pen for an inning is done in the bullpen itself, not in the game.

You have AGon, Crawford, Lester, Youk, etc etc etc… and you think Ace is going to be the determining factor in the series? C’mon man… Aceves pitching in relief is a minor role. You need your regulars to play like they’re capable of.

I agree with ECB. It’s the rest of the team that has to pick it up. We can’t waste games like the one Lester pitched yesterday.

i would prefer to lose the game today and have crawford go 4-for-4 than win with a crawford 0-for. francona is finally trying him at leadoff, where he belongs. the lineup today is close to optimal

    crawford
    pedroia
    gonzalez
    youkilis
    ortiz
    drew
    salty
    ellsbury
    scutaro

i’d switch the last three to go scutaro salty ellsbury, but i’m very happy with the top half through drew

after watching francona play mcdonald over cameron against matt harrison in TX, i had almost lost all lineup consutrction hope

so psyched to hear carl clarifying the goofy “he doesn’t like to lead off” crap today in an interview. he was more diplomatic than i would be, but he basically explained “6 years ago i said i didn’t think i was good at leading off. i, uh…i’m better now. i’ll hit anywhere”

here’s hoping francona lets go of his ellsbury crush and keeps carl up top. more at-bats for him, gonzo, and youk and maybe some life at the bottom of the lineup from jacoby

He was actually quoted as saying essentially the same thing in an article on either WEEI or the Boston Globe earlier this year but it was never really picked up on by anyone, glad to see it’s getting out there now.

By having Ells in the 8 spot, he’s essentially a lead off hitter with Scutaro hitting 2nd and Crawford still hitting 3rd (where Tito wanted him). So I’m pretty sure that’s the reasoning behind it.

Give credit to Amaro. He knew Reyes was damaged goods and yet the Sox wasted a cool Mil on him. Quite a blunder for Epstein.

I would not call Reyes a blunder. A million dollars to the Sox is nothing. And they didn’t give up any players to get him. It’s only money and now they don’t have to worry about him any more.

Every team has a budget. That million dollars could have went into the draft to get one or two more high school kids.

True, every team has a budget, but the Red Sox would not take money out of it’s draft budget to pay for the regular roster. I am sure they have the money to cover it as they have been anticipating this draft for a while.

Exactly, that’s the greatest benefit of being a big market team… we can afford to take risks, and not be crippled if they don’t pan out.

EDIT: WE being big market teams… I’m not a Sox fan, I swear! Don’t you dare start that rumor, or my reputation will come from the grave to get its revenge!
