The Padres will call up reliever Eduarniel Núñez for tomorrow’s doubleheader in Philadelphia, reports Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Matt Waldron is being optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The Padres will be able to recall another player tomorrow as the 27th man for the twin bill. They’ll need to select Nuñez onto the 40-man roster and already have an opening after designating Logan Gillaspie for assignment yesterday.
It’s the first MLB call for the 26-year-old Núñez. The 6’2″ righty is a former Cubs prospect who joined the Friars as a minor league free agent last offseason. He has spent the bulk of the season in Double-A, working to a 3.57 earned run average over 22 2/3 innings. He struck out more than 40% of opposing hitters while getting swinging strikes on 21% of his pitches. That earned him a bump to Triple-A El Paso in the middle of June. Núñez has rattled off 7 1/3 scoreless frames with 11 more punchouts over seven appearances.
Núñez is now up to a combined 30 innings of 2.70 ERA ball with a 41.9% strikeout percentage on the season. That’s elite swing-and-miss ability backed up by high-octane stuff. Núñez has averaged north of 99 MPH on his heater since getting bumped to Triple-A. He has been a two-pitch pitcher this season, using the fastball slightly more often than he turns to his upper-80s breaking ball. Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs ranked him the #32 prospect in the San Diego system last month, crediting him with plus or better grades on both offerings.
That it nevertheless took him parts of eight minor league seasons to get an MLB look reflects his well below-average control. Núñez has walked nearly 15% of opponents over his professional career. He has been a little better in that regard this season, cutting the free passes to a somewhat more manageable 12% clip. He’ll be a volatile but intriguing middle innings option for skipper Mike Shildt.
Just normal 27th Man stuff, hopefully he gets an appearance and impresses in this Philly series. Welcome to The Bigs, kid!
I don’t think a plus 40% strikeout rate is normal for 27th man stuff
I meant the roster churn, not his stuff! He’s been hot in El Paso, well deserved call-up if even for a doubleheader. Kid should stick on the 26 “soon” if he doesn’t immediately.
Guy has earned a shot. May have to go up and down in 25 but likely a guy fighting to hold a spot in the pen in 26.
Too bad Waldron is getting rocked. He’s got a knuckleball, if I’m not mistaken? I think he’s the pitcher I’m thinking about. I just appreciate pitchers that throw a knuckleball or even a knuckle-curve, love seeing that pitch, especially in today’s high velocity era.
Appreciate the knuckler as well. Waldron kept the Pads within striking distance of the postseason last year during the 1st half of the season. Without his performances, team would have missed the playoffs. Hoping he can recapture the magic as it’s always more fun when a whiffle wizard is dealing.
That name really takes a turn on you. Hope he gets a chance for his first big league K.
Regurgitation of statistics doesn’t make one a scout…
White Sox need a first baseman badly. See you in LA.
If he’s half the fill-in/innings eater pitcher that Casparius has been for the Dodgers in 2025, Pads will reap the benefits. The bully starting to show signs of wear and tear and this series with the Phils likely won’t help.
Don’t worry Shildt will find an opportunity to use him where a walk will be catastrophic to a Padres victory. Shildt is very good at poor pen management.
Liberty – when you have one of the better BP’s in baseball and you call on a guy to do his job and he well, craps the bed that day (which 100% of all relievers do during their career), why do you think it’s the mangers fault?
Padres have been very good at fining bargain pitchers and position players and “fixing them” for breakout seasons.
Would love to see RHSP and Padres Minor League Pitcher of the 2024 year Henry Baez in the Padres rotation. for an extended look.
Baez 2024 stats: 7-4 wins/losses 2.99 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 129.1 innings. (High A and AA).
AAA is often just skipped for the better players and prospects.
There are a lot of AAAA and demoted veteran players in AAA.
He might get that chance but I’d rather Yu and King come back so they don’t need him in 2025.
Happy to see him in Peoria in March when I go though!
Padres have been very good @ finding and fixing pitchers
and helping them reach their maximum potential.
