Quick Hits: Giants, Byrd, Reyes, Jurrjens

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 14, 2013 at 4:31pm CDT

As arbitration eligible players around MLB agree to terms with their respective teams, be sure to use MLBTR’s Arbitration Tracker. The tool allows users to search in many ways, including by team and by service time. Here are the latest links from around MLB…

  • The Giants' multiyear deals with Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro are among five free agent contracts that could backfire, ESPN.com's Jim Bowden writes.
  • The Giants would offer Brian Wilson a big league contract, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (on Twitter). The Mets are also in on Wilson, who was non-tendered by San Francisco at the end of November.
  • Doug Lara, Marlon Byrd's personal hitting coach, told Puro Beisbol last week that the outfielder is in discussions with the Marlins. Byrd has been playing for the Tomateros de Culiacán this winter (translation via Nick Collias).
  • Dennys Reyes told Puro Beisbol that he has offers from the Dodgers, Orioles, and Blue Jays. Among the three, Reyes said, "I'd like to return to the Dodgers," the team he debuted with as 20-year-old in 1997 (translation via Nick Collias).
  • Free agent right-hander Jair Jurrjens told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports that he feels good physically and has begun throwing bullpens (Twitter link).

Orioles Release Dennys Reyes

By Zachary Links | March 4, 2012 at 12:27pm CDT

The Orioles have released pitcher Dennys Reyes for failure to report to camp, according to Rich Dubroff of CSNBaltimore.com (via Twitter).  The 34-year-old agreed to a minor league deal with the O's back in January.

The left-hander briefly appeared in the Major Leagues last season with the Red Sox.  Prior to that, Reyes spent two seasons with the Cardinals where he posted a 3.42 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9.

Orioles To Sign Dennys Reyes

By Zachary Links | January 20, 2012 at 7:43pm CDT

The Orioles will sign 34-year-old left-hander Dennys Reyes to a minor league deal, a source tells MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith (via Twitter).  Reyes, a Paragon Sports International client, briefly appeared in the Major Leagues with the Red Sox in 2011.

The veteran has spent time with eleven different big league clubs across his 15-year career.  During that span, Reyes has a ERA of 4.21 with 8.0 K/9, 5.0 BB/9 and a ground ball rate of 55.9%.

Red Sox Notes: Francona, Epstein, Papi, Free Agents

By Steve Adams | October 2, 2011 at 6:54pm CDT

It's been a tumultuous few weeks for the Red Sox and their fans, and this array of links can speak to that…

  • Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald writes that the ownership trio of John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino deserve some of the blame for Terry Francona's departure from Boston.
  • Boston's brass doesn't want to comment on the possibility of GM Theo Epstein winding up with the Cubs, says the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber, but until they address the situation or until Chicago hires someone, the potential is there.
  • Ken Rosenthal quotes a rival GM who says that when the Red Sox are in crisis mode, "all bets are off," meaning that they could conceivably let Epstein interview for the Cubs' position (Twitter link).
  • In a second tweet, Rosenthal relays a thought from another GM: what could Epstein fetch in return from the Cubs after the White Sox netted two minor leaguers for Ozzie Guillen?
  • Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe wonders if Epstein is the next to head through the Red Sox "spin cycle." Abraham discusses the possibility of Epstein going to the Cubs, and the intriguing possibility of him hiring Francona as his manager there.
  • In the same piece, Abraham notes that if Epstein were to leave the Red Sox, senior vice president and assistant GM Ben Cherington would be a logical replacement. MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith looked at Cherington as a GM candidate back in August.
  • Still in Abraham's article, David Ortiz says he wants to return to the Red Sox in 2012 and beyond, and that Boston fans "don't deserve what we offered them."
  • Hideki Okajima, Drew Sutton, and Dennys Reyes, join yesterday's list of minor leaguers who officially declared free agency, according to Abraham.

Red Sox Place Dennys Reyes On Restricted List

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 5, 2011 at 1:33pm CDT

The Red Sox placed Dennys Reyes on the restricted list, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Sean McAdam of CSNNE reports that the left-hander, who was designated for assignment in April, needed time at home in Mexico (Twitter link).

Reyes, 34, walked two and allowed a pair of hits in 1 2/3 innings spread out over four appearances with Boston before the Red Sox removed him from their active roster. Players on the restricted list do not count toward a team's 25-man or 40-man roster.

Dennys Reyes Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 13, 2011 at 12:58pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Reyes cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A, according to MLB.com's transactions page.

FRIDAY: The Red Sox announced that they have designated Dennys Reyes for assignment. In corresponding moves, Boston placed Matt Albers on the 15-day disabled list and called up Alfredo Aceves and Felix Doubront.

After a month of anticipation, the Red Sox selected Reyes and Albers for their Opening Day roster, preferring them over Aceves, Doubront, Hideki Okajima and others. As GM Theo Epstein pointed out before the season, Boston will need all of its relievers at some point in 2011.

Though Reyes isn't to blame for his team's 0-6 start, he hasn't helped. He has walked two and allowed a pair of hits in 1 2/3 innings spread out over four appearances. At one point in yesterday's loss to the Indians, the left-hander hit two consecutive batters. The four appearances cost the Red Sox $900K, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter).

AL East Notes: Red Sox, Showalter, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | March 28, 2011 at 8:55am CDT

Among AL East clubs, only the Yankees will play on the season's first day Thursday.  Here's the latest from the division…

  • Relievers Dennys Reyes and Matt Albers made Boston's 25-man roster, reports WEEI's Alex Speier.  Hideki Okajima and Alfredo Aceves were optioned to Triple-A.  GM Theo Epstein explained to reporters that the choices were about "preservation of pitching depth," since he would have lost Reyes and Albers if they didn't make the team.  Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald has quotes from Okajima's agent Joe Rosen on the decision.
  • Orioles manager Buck Showalter stirred the pot in this Men's Journal interview with Paul Solotaroff, saying, "I’d like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll."  Epstein has already accepted an apology from Showalter on the comments, tweets Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.
  • Red Sox 2010 second-round pick Brandon Workman changed agents from Kevin Hubbard to Jeff Berry of CAA Sports, reports Speier.  Workman had signed for $800K, about $165K over slot.  Track all the latest in our Agency Database.
  • Another strong year might make C.C. Sabathia the Yankees' best free agent signing ever, suggests Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  The contract could end up being a three-year, $60MM deal if the lefty opts out after the season.

Red Sox Purchase Reyes’ Major League Contract

By Zachary Links | March 26, 2011 at 2:58pm CDT

2:58pm: Terry Francona announced that the Red Sox have purchased the left-handed reliever's contract,  according to the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber (via Twitter).  To make room on the 40-man roster, the club has moved right-hander Junichi Tazawa to the 60-day DL.

Francona added that Reyes will still be competing with Alfredo Aceves, Hideki Okajima, and Matt Albers for the final two bullpen spots, tweets Speier.

2:08pm: Boston left-hander Dennys Reyes can opt-out of his minor league deal in a matter of hours if he is not added to the club's major league roster.  Reyes has been told that the BoSox have purchased his big league contract, tweets Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.  The deal is not yet finalized as the club has to find a way to fit him on the 40-man roster.

It should be noted, however, that the soon-to-be 34-year-old told the press that he's still waiting on word from the club, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe (via Twitter).

The veteran's opt-out date was originally set for today but the two sides agreed this week to push the deadline up to Sunday.  Reyes hasn't ruled out extending his opt-out date once more, tweets Alex Speier of WEEI.com.  If Reyes makes the big league roster, he will earn $900K with incentives that boost the deal's value to $1.4MM in total.

Red Sox Notes: Albers, Reyes, Westmoreland

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 24, 2011 at 10:27am CDT

Some Red Sox links for Thursday, as Clay Buchholz looks to continue his dominant spring against the Marlins…

  • Matt Albers told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that he hasn't talked to any Japanese teams and doesn't know why a report yesterday had him going to Japan. “Don’t know where that came from,” Albers said.
  • Dennys Reyes agreed to extend the opt-out date in his contract by one day from Saturday to Sunday, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The left-hander is battling for a spot in Boston's bullpen.
  • As Speier explains in a piece for Baseball America, Ryan Westmoreland, who underwent brain surgery last March, is continuing his attempt to return to the majors. The former top prospect has made impressive strides in his recovery, though his vision hasn't returned completely and he's still working on some fine motor skills. Best of luck to Westmoreland as he recovers.

Heyman On Bautista, Wakefield, Dominguez, Perez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 22, 2011 at 5:17pm CDT

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told Jon Heyman of SI.com that he thought carefully before locking up Jose Bautista to a $65MM extension. "When you spend that kind of money, I don't think you can ever be completely comfortable," Anthopoulos said. "And I am one to agonize over everything, anyway,'' Both Anthopoulos and Bautista acknowledged that a second 54-homer season is unlikely, but that doesn't mean the former utility player can't produce. Here are the rest of Heyman's rumors…

  • Boston's front office has not seriously considered cutting Tim Wakefield.
  • Dennys Reyes, who can opt out of his contract Friday, will likely make the team as well, according to Heyman.
  • Two scouts say Marlins third baseman Matt Dominguez isn't ready to hit in the major leagues. However, he's an above-average defender.
  • Though manager Joe Girardi won't say as much, Ivan Nova has locked up the Yankees' No. 4 starter job, according to Heyman.
  • It appears that Oliver Perez will find a job. The Yankees and Brewers aren't interested.
  • Scouts tell Heyman that Twins pitching prospect Kyle Gibson isn't far from the majors.
