Morosi On Giants, Braves, Berkman

By Tim Dierkes | August 30, 2011 at 1:26pm CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports has been tweeting up a storm today…

  • The Giants are among the most active teams on the trade market; Morosi says they're seeking bullpen help and maybe a bat.  Nine relievers are known to have cleared waivers, while others such as Chad Qualls, Jamey Wright, Matt Capps, Todd Coffey, Mike MacDougal, Octavio Dotel, and Joe Nathan could be available in my estimation.  More speculation from me: position player targets could include Jose Molina, Ryan Doumit, Melky Cabrera, Marlon Byrd, and Angel Pagan.
  • The Braves seek bench help in advance of tomorrow's waiver trade deadline.  They signed Wes Helms a few weeks ago.
  • There's currently no momentum toward a trade between the Cardinals and Rangers for Lance Berkman, tweets Morosi.  The Cardinals might require a return on par with the two draft picks they could receive if they offer arbitration to Berkman and he turns it down to sign elsewhere.  Berkman cleared waivers, reported Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Friday.

I wonder what atrocious veteran Sabean is looking at now to add to his collection that has worked out so well recently

The only thing worse than Sabean’s decision to trade for Orlando Cabrera was Bochy’s decision to bat him and his .270 OBP leading off.

The Giants are “seeking bullpen help and maybe a bat.” Maybe a bat ? Really ? Man, that’s classic.

All the giants need is 2 good bats and maybe a bullpen player

What’s the rule? You have to be on the 40 man roster before Sept 1 in order to be playoff eligible unless there’s an injury. Right?

I believe they have to be not only on the 40 man roster, but on the active 25+(you can have up to your entire 40 man roster on your active roster on September 1st) man roster by September 1st.

When I seen Berkman cleared waivers I thought there would be a ton of interest in him.  He has shown he can play either corner OF position and 1B.  His offense has been great this year.  Not sure why there isn’t a lot of interest, let alone why he even cleared waivers.

I was not aware that Melky Cabrera cleared waivers or was put on waivers by the Royals.

I don’t know that either is the case, he just seems like a viable trade candidate.

I didn’t think so.  I doubt he would clear waivers to be traded to the Giants.  For a baseball expert to say someone who has not cleared waivers at this point of the season not real good on Morosi’s part.

I dont understand who the Giants are thinking about trading…from the list on this web site, they dont have a single player that has cleared waivers.  I think Marlo Byrd would be a good addition, but more for next year, not this year.  I dont think there is anyone worth adding because this year is gone.  If I am wrong, I will gladly own up to it.  The problem I see is the defeat that is in the eyes of all of the hitters.  Nobody is going to the plate with any type of confidence.  They don’t have a power hitter, they dont have a leadoff hitter, they dont have anyone in the bottom of the order that consistently puts the ball in play.  It is getting out of control.  The Giants should try to trade for Marlon Byrd, then call up all of their young guys and give them as many at bats as possible to see what we might have.  I’m talking about CF Gary Brown, SS Brandon Crawford, OF Francisco Peguero, C Hector Sanchez, and then keep 1B Brandon Belt, 3B Pablo Sandoval, 2B Jeff Keppinger and RF Carlos Beltran in the everyday line up.

Trades the Giants should try to make this offseason:
      Aubrey Huff for Daisuke Matsuzaka.
-Contracts match up perfectly.  Dice-K is recovering from TJ and should be ready by July.  He could help the rotation for the Giants down the stretch.  Huff could add some depth for the BoSox and would give them a lot more than Dice-K will.  Huff leaving also free’s up 1B for either a free agent addition or Brandon Belt to move back to his normal position.

Jonathan Sanchez and Andres Torres for Marlon Byrd.
Contracts match up, but the Cubs would have control of Sanchez for a few more years whereas Byrd will be a free agent after the 2012 season.  Byrd gives the Giants a quality bat that will hit near .300 and give quality defense at any outfield position.  The Giants need to get better all around and they need to sacrifice some pitching to do so.  J Sanchez has lost a ton of value, but they cant get caught up with that.  They missed the boat to deal him for something big, now they just need to get something serviceable.

The Giants “lose” both of these trades, but they better use their payroll and allow their team to be more balanced and set up for future success.  If they were able to get Pujols or Fielder (long shots) to sign in SF they would not have a place for them to play.  This gives them some fresh faces after a horrible offensive year and gives them flexibility to add whoever will help them the most.

        1. The Giants don’t need help in the rotation. We’ll likely see a second act of this year. Zito starts the year as the #5 (only because of the money), finds his way out of the rotation, and Surkamp steps in.

        2. Barring an extension, Sanchez is a FA after next year, too. He is about to go into his last arbitration year.

I have a feeling that the Giants management is either going to have Sabean go “all-in” and sign a “franchise” type player like Fielder or Reyes (Pujols ain’t going anywhere), or totally hold him back and keep building from within. Except for Beltran. I think that either way, they make a very concerted effort to re-sign him to try and save face on the trade.

I was certainly thinking the other day when the Jays recalled Brian Jeroloman that it likely indicated there was a deal in the works for Jose Molina.  The Giants definitely would be a fit for him as they really don’t have any catching right now. A catcher with a .300 average and a defensive rep would appear to be of interest to them.

The Giants had one of those years where the injury bug killed their chances. with them being 5 games back, this team is cooked.
