Pirates Claim Matt Pagnozzi

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 14, 2011 at 2:53pm CDT

The Pirates announced that they claimed catcher Matt Pagnozzi off of waivers from the Rockies. To create 40-man roster space for Pagnozzi, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, the Pirates transferred Steve Pearce to the 60-day disabled list.

Pagnozzi has spent parts of three seasons in the Major Leagues, including seven games in 2011. The 28-year-old spent most of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he posted a .275/.337/.421 line in 198 plate appearances. Baseball America named Pagnozzi the best defensive catcher in the Cardinals' minor league system entering the 2009 season.

MLBTR's Tim Dierkes predicts that the Pirates will decline their options for catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder this offseason. In that context, Neal Huntington's claim makes sense; the Pirates obtain depth heading into 2012.

He’s Tom’s nephew. His other uncle, Mike, and his dad Tim played in the minors.

“Baseball America named Pagnozzi the best defensive catcher in the Cardinals’ minor league system entering the 2009 season.”

Best specific tool, in a specific position, in a specific team’s minor league system, in a specific year, according to a specific source.  I find this claim-to-fame amusing 🙂  A more rigorous metric, if I may: .602 OPS across 1901 MiLB PAs.

Showed signs of competence at the plate late in ’10.  Was surprised when the Cards did not bring him back for another shot

so now you got ryan doumit, michael mckenry, jason jaramillo, eric fryer, an injured chris snyder, and pagnozzi on there roster, good job pirates you have six of a position that no one else has more than 4

Actually, Snyder isn’t on the roster since he’s on the 60 day DL. That’s what happens when you have to use 7 or 8 catchers to get through a major league season because of injuries.

you do realize that Snyder’s year ended with his back surgery a few months ago, right?  and Doumit and Jaramillo were injured for a good part of the season.  picking up Pagnozzi most likely means that they are letting go Doumit and Snyder in the offseason.  think a little bit.
