Angels Notes: Wilson, Bullpen, Coaches

By Mark Polishuk | November 11, 2011 at 7:22pm CDT

Here's the latest on the Halos….

  • General manager Jerry Dipoto has "reached out" to C.J. Wilson's representation, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link), though DiPoto added it's "very early in the courting period."  In his Offseason Outlook piece about the Angels, MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith estimated the club would have roughly $10-$20MM in payroll space to work with this winter, so the Angels could afford to pay Wilson the $12-15MM average annual salary he's likely to receive on the free agent market and still have a bit of cash left over to address other roster holes.
  • From that same DiGiovanna link, Dipoto also said the Angels are looking at right-handed relievers.
  • The Angels' coaching staff have all had their contracts renewed and will be back in 2012, Dipoto tells DiGiovanna (Twitter link).
  • Keep up on all the latest Halos news by following MLBTR's Angels-specific Facebook page, Twitter feed and RSS feed.

To be fair, outside of his 2009 postseason, CC Sabathia has also pitched extremely poorly in the postseason.

      Sabathia:
      2007 : 1-2, 8.80era, 2.20 whip, 15.1 ip, 21h, 14k, 11bb
      2008 : 0-1, 12.27era, 2.73 whip, 3.2 ip, 6h, 5k, 4bb
      2010 : 2-0, 5.63era, 1.81whip, 16ip, 22h, 15k, 7bb
      2011 : 0-0, 6.23era, 2.08whip, 8.2ip, 10h, 11k, 8bb

      Postseason Career:
      Sabathia : 7-4, 4.81era, 1.62whip, 86ip, 93h, 82k, 46bb
      CJ Wilson : 1-5, 4.82era, 1.43whip, 52.1ip, 46h, 43k, 29bb

Wilson will obviously cost much less than Sabathia and also has less wear and tear on his arm due to only being a starter for 2 yrs.

He said “(and career for that matter)”…I take that to mean his career…not playoff career. Either way he’s knocking a guy that has gotten better each year.
I would like to have CJ back, but not for what he’ll cost. I’m still hung up on the fact that Weaver re-signed for $85MM. CJ is not worth what Weaver is worth, so if it gets around $70-$75MM the Rangers should fold.

Not sure if Angels should waste their time talking to Wilson unless it’s just to drive up the price for everyone else.  Third Base is a huge hole they need to fill.  Beyond that I’m not sure where their minds are in terms of potential upgrades.  But Angels NEED more offense!

Well it’s hard to say who they are and are not interested in.  Problem is if you say you’re interested in someone specific then that drives up the price because the agent now knows you’re hot for their client and are willing to pay a premium for them.  So they could be sort of pretending they’re not really interested to see who else is and what kind of offers they’re making.

I’m not entirely thrilled with the prospect of signing Wilson, but it doesn’t hurt for the Angels to carry out their due diligence on a multitude of free agents.

Haren/Santana will both be free agents after 2013 (safely assuming their options will both be picked up), and it’s a safe bet to presume that Haren, and quite possibly Santana as well (will be 31 after 2013) won’t be back.

The 2012 free agent pitching class is absolutely abysmal/old. The 2013 pitching class, in terms of elite starters, features two likely extension candidates in Cain/Hamels, as well as Zach Greinke. After those three, there’s a considerable drop-off in talent AND age for that matter.

Considering the Angels’ apparent lack of minor league pitching talent (just be cause Richards and Chatwood are OUR top 2 pitching prospects doesn’t mean that translates into future aces), they’re essentially forced to kick the tires on Wilson.

it’s really too far off to say that Haren and Santana won’t be back.  I think Santana surely could, but i think Haren enjoys playing in SoCal because it is close to home and enjoys the area.  Not saying he would take a huge pay cut, but i think he will be locked up to an extension before he leaves via FA at under market value price.  He seems like a pretty stand up guy.

He is definitely a stand-up guy and forgive me if I came across as pessimistic about the notion of retaining them. I would LOVE to have them both locked up.

However, Haren IS getting up there in age, so the Angels would be wise not to hand out too many years in an extension.

I agree we need offense.. CJ would be a nice add but i don’t want him, and i dont want Angels to give this guy alot of money…I say Angels sign Madson… and looks like they will end up signing this guy to..They should look into Cespedes that CF from Cuba id take him over Cj anyday.. Then make Wells Dh.. Cespeds LF..Pete CF..Hunter RF…and Cespedes is said to be the whole package.. We have seen what Morales can do and Morales didn’t have any Hype what so ever.. he wasn’t even rated anything he was said to be a power hitter with decent discipline, put it this way no one expected what he did…Cespedes and Madson anyday! everyday!(and Abreu can be our PH whether he likes it or not..or trade him but that will be hard to do)

Would fans (and the media for that matter) really be talking about our hole at 3B if you had “3B” in front of Howie Kendrick and “2B” in front of Alberto Callaspo? It’d still be the same exact production, but their productions are more “suited” for their positions. Many teams would love to have their 2B lead their team in avg, obp, have more bb’s than k’s and play very good defense. Many teams also would love a .280-.300 hitter with 18 hr’s out of their 3B position. But since we have those players playing the opposite position, we MUST upgrade one of them?

But I do agree with the principle of your post in that our offense needs to be upgraded. Our veterans completely tanked last season and we had to rely on our youngsters over-performing our expectations just to remain afloat.

This is just dumb. They have three above average starters in the rotation and just simply don’t want want to address the main problem. The Angels do not have a feared bat in their lineup and have a log jam at the positions that are meant to be filled by feared bats 1b/OF/DH.

The offense is what desperately needs improvement but they don’t know what to do. They are sound at 2b and SS with Kendrick and Aybar. The only thing the Angels can do is sign Aramis Ramirez. They need an impact bat and they are absolutely log-jammed at 1b/DH/OF.

        Very true actually.

Would’ve been interesting to see how the season played out had Vernon Wells duplicated his 2010 stat line.

Abreu simply wasn’t himself and Hunter continues to utterly fail at living up to his 18 million annual salary.

With signs of emergence from Bourjos and the potential return of Kendrys, the Angels could have a more potent offense than some would like to believe.

Idk if Wells duplicating 2010 would have helped the Angels edge much closer to the Rangers. Texas still won the West by 10 games.
They should have never taken on Wells’ contract. I’m still dumbfounded why they did.

They won by 10 but it was much closer than that. Wells having his 2010 season might have been the difference. Angels quit on the season about a week out.

Something tells me Dipoto isn’t exactly jumping at the opportunity to overpay for a 33 year-old Aramis Ramirez.

I won’t argue that his production has been remarkably consistent, but again, he’ll be 34 next season, that production WILL fall off…it would be an immense gamble handing him the 3 year contract he’s seeking.

The Angels youth movement has sprouted with Bourjos and Trout, and will continue once Hunter/Abreu are gone after 2012, the last thing the Angels need is an old, sluggish over-the-hill third baseman.

Angels could sign Wilson, as they need a lefty in their rotation, and trade Ervin Santana who only has 1 more year on his contract minus his 2013 option.  That would free up the salary for Wilson.  Problem I have, aside from not wanting to get rid of Santana, is that they need to be careful not to overpay for a guy who is already 30 and hasn’t pitched more than a couple years as a starter.  On the flip side, I think he’d do very well in Angel stadium as he’s a fly ball pitcher and it’s a pitcher friendly ballpark.

was just going to post something similar to this.  Wouldn’t surprise me at all.  Would have to be for a 3B.  Not sure if this makes sense, but how about Alonso from the Reds?  Reds are looking for starters, Alonso has some experience at 3B, and if they are committed to Votto long term, they may look to deal.  He would not be a great 3B defensively, but over time he could develop.  Just an idea, not saying it would happen.

      • Ryan Klinkert

It’s a good idea in theory, but in all honesty, the Reds are more likely to deal Votto and hang on to Alonso. If the Reds are determined to stay competitive in the NL Central without raising their payroll significantly, signing Votto long-term hinders such a plan.

Great.  Watch them sign wilson to an absurd contract and give up draft picks to texas.  Then with the angels luck, wilson turns into aj burnet or john lackey.  and those draft picks turn into quality prospects that would turn texas into the second coming of the big red machine. JUST GREAT.

The Jays would trade Edwin Encarnacion to the Angels for Kendrick on a moment’s notice if the Angels go for it.  He is a decent 3B and had a great second half that rivaled Napoli’s huge second half in 2011.  Napoli hit 18 homers, E5 hit 15, Napoli hit .383, E5 hit .362, Napoli had 42 RBI’s, E5 had 43 plus 8 stolen bases.  He could easily be the big bat the Angels are looking for, but it would take Kendrick to obtain him.

All you idiots that think Yu Darvish is superior to C.J. Wilson, Wilson is a proven successful MLB pitcher. Darvish is no different than a top prospect… an unproven MLB player. Most Japanese players are incredibly overhyped. Hideki Irabu the “Japanese Nolan Ryan”. Then there’s…. Kazuo Matsui, Kosuke Fukudome, Daisuke Matsusaka, etc.
