Beltran Switches From Boras To Lozano

By Tim Dierkes | November 1, 2011 at 12:20pm CDT

One of the offseason's biggest free agents is leaving baseball's most notorious agency.  Carlos Beltran has switched from the Boras Corporation to Dan Lozano's Icon Sports Group, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  Boras gets a taste of his own medicine here, as he's well-known for taking prominent free agent clients from other agencies as big paydays are approaching.

Back in January of 2005, Boras authored Beltran's seven-year, $119MM contract with the Mets.  With the contract reaching its conclusion, Boras had lunch with Beltran in September to discuss his next contract.  However, the 34-year-old right fielder may have already been interviewing other agencies, as Crasnick says he did so this summer.

As MLBTR's agency database shows, Lozano will also be working on free agent deals this winter for Albert Pujols, Jimmy Rollins, and several other veterans.  Boras, meanwhile, still has Prince Fielder, Edwin Jackson, Ryan Madson, Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Pena, Bruce Chen, Johnny Damon, Mike Gonzalez, Magglio Ordonez, Andruw Jones, and Jason Varitek this offseason.

And suddenly the number of teams willing to sign him has increased…

“Since then, something convinced the 34-year-old right fielder, ranked ninth on MLBTR’s top 50 free agents list, to switch to Lozano”

      A conscience perhaps?

Yeah with Beltran in the fold you’d have to think the Orioles would be favorites to win the AL East.

Or he doesn’t want to scare other teams away. If he wanted to stay with SF he could just go over him but the fact that he’s a Boras client takes a lot of teams out of the mix. I don’t doubt that’s the reason, I’m just saying it’s probably not the only reason.

He could just be dissatisfied with Boras.

I’m just listing reasons, not saying that’s the only one. No doubt it expands his market a little bit. Doesn’t mean he’s going to get any less money by hiring someone other than Boras.

… and how many average/middle market teams have a Scott Boras client they’ve signed as a free agent?

The main reason, I think, is just that he isn’t satisfied with Boras and wanted to move on.

Wow wonder if the rumor that Boras’ asking price for Beltran made the Yankees decide to keep Swisher is true.  Firing Boras shortly after this rumor is leaked leads me to believe that it is.

Not sure why Boras gets a bad wrap just for being the best in his business.  He’s the Albert Pujols of agents.

Because the typical fan likes to be holier than thou and rant about how they’d play the game for free.  How many agents are well liked people in general?  Why would you expect the one who gets the most money, is egotistical, and often makes absurd comp’s to be anything but loathed?  Are you surprised IRS workers aren’t as popular as firemen? It is what it is, no kids are asking for Scott Boras autographed pictures for Christmas.

Just realized, he is also Brian Wilson’s agent and used to work at agency where Timmy, J.T. Snow and Bonds was were.  AND has Jimmy Rollins.

      Hmmmmm….

That argument would work better if Boras wasn’t the agent of a certain pitcher who signed the largest deal the Giants gave out.

Rollins = Washed up and coming up on Tejada territory.  Tejada’s 2010 was nearly the same except SB’s and Rollins gets hurt too often.  Let BCraw play

Rollins isn’t washed up. He’s not the MVP level player he was in 2007 and he never really was.

I think he’d be a disaster in AT&T, but he’s not washed up. He still has an above average bat at short stop and unlike Tejada, he plays excellent defense.

A lot of other team will be in on Beltran on (with Boras out the picture). You can bet the Phillies, Giants, Braves, Mets, Orioles, Marlins, Red Sox, and Mariners will be calling. Maybe even the Yankees (for a DH) and DiamondBacks (raising payroll after making the playoffs).

Boras received the phone call he lost a big client and he flipped out until he heard it was Beltran, he then went back to his lair and told his secretary not to bother him unless something really important came up as he is getting ready for Prince Fielder and all of his comparisons to Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, etc.

C’mon, does this really influence his destination?  He’s headed towards the best contract where he likes the odds of winning.  I’d like to see Beltran back in a Giants uniform (especially since Wheeler was dealt), but I’d have to believe the Red Sox are a serious threat to swipe him as predicted on this site.

I agree. I’d also like to see him back, but don’t think this move makes it any more likely. If anything, I think he probably wanted to go to the Yankees, and when Boras couldn’t make it happen and NY picked up the option on Swisher, Beltran was upset with how it went down and made the switch.

I don’t get the attraction of Beltran.  I know he is a good name with a good track record,  but he is on the downside and is an injury waiting to happen.
