Mark Cuban Had Interest In Dodgers, Could Make Bid

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2011 at 10:05pm CDT

10:05pm: A spokesman for McCourt told Shaikin that the Dodgers owner hasn't interacted with Cuban. "He doesn't know Mark Cuban. He hasn't spoken with Mark Cuban. He hasn't had anyone speak with Mark Cuban on his behalf" (Twitter link).

8:23pm: Mark Cuban has interest in buying the Dodgers, but not unless the team's price drops. The high-profile Dallas Mavericks owner says he offered to buy the Dodgers from owner Frank McCourt several months ago, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times. However, McCourt wanted $1-1.2 billion for the team, so Cuban held his cash.

"At that price, I wasn't interested," Cuban told Shaikin.

Cuban, who has bid on the Cubs and Rangers in the past, won't rule out buying the Dodgers if the price drops under $1 billion. McCourt and MLB are nearing an agreement on a bankruptcy settlement, according to Shaikin. Under the agreement, McCourt would sell the team, giving prospective owners a chance to purchase one of MLB's premier franchises.

Then he might want to move them to Dallas so it can have all 4 Major Sports Teams and yes Dallas does have a MLS team but doesn’t count but no WNBA Team yet.

Lets see here.  Dallas basically has the Stars, Rangers, Cowboys, and Mavericks.  Not quite following your comment.  Saying the Rangers aren’t in Dallas doesn’t really make sense either.

Cuban and Jerry Jones are probably two of the best owners in all of sports. They helped make Dallas a major market

Now what has Jerry Jones done to make Dallas a major market?  The Cowboys were “America’s team” LONG before he ever came to town, and they haven’t been anything since Jimmy Johnson was fired.  If you ask people who live in Dallas, the 3rd superbowl win in the 90s was with Jimmy’s team.

I wonder if selig finally allows him to own a team with this being his last season. I mean come on. Selling allows a guy who is a potential war profiteer to buy the stros. Let’s McCourt who was cash poor and ruined a great franchise own a team. Allows the marlins owner to pocket cash and not use it to field a team. But mark Cuban who literally just want to win isnt ever allowed to own a team.

MLB, lets get this deal done! Just in time for the Winter meetings and just in time to sign Prince and extend Kemp and Kershaw!!!! Dump Ethier if you need the cash Cuban. We can keep Loney, resign Barrajas and Gwynn and let T.Gwynn, Rivera and Sands battle it out for a starting OF job and let the other two play backup!

Techionally Texas is in the Midwest but MLB doesn’t have a Midwest Division and Arlington is it’s own town. Florida Marlins are coming Miami Marlins so Texas Rangers can come either Arlington or Dallas Rangers.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want Cuban to buy the Dodgers? He’s set a lower value for the team in his own mind than many seem to think it’s worth, and also has said that he thinks the team will require years of rebuilding. That’s not this Dodger fan’s ideal new owner.

    Reply
    • thegrayrace

That’s just smart financial strategy. You want to lower the value of the team in the eyes of your potential competing buyers as much as possible, make them doubt it is worth the asking price. If someone like Cuban, who attracts a lot of publicity, talks up the value of the team it only raises the price he’d have to pay.

Obviously, some rhetoric can be expected but people with a billion to invest in a sports franchise are not so easily fooled. If they were, they would not have a billion to invest in a sports franchise. At this point I’d be surprised if Cuban became the owner, if for no other reason than he’d likely have to pay more than he’s already said the team was worth. Keep in mind, a big part of the value of the franchise is the real estate. A buyer who has ideas about what the excess land around the stadium could be worth if handled properly will have a whole different set of numbers to work with than someone who is only looking at the financial potential of the team. Someone like Rick Caruso, for example. His name has come up.
