Quick Hits: Red Sox, Cespedes, Pujols

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 24, 2011 at 12:57pm CDT

Six years ago today, the Red Sox traded Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez to the Marlins for two players who would help them secure a second World Series title in four seasons: Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell. I looked back at the trade in detail two years ago, declaring it a win-win. Here are today’s links, starting with an update on the Red Sox…

  • Alex Speier of WEEI.com provides a year-by-year comparison of the free agents that left the Red Sox and the resulting compensatory draft picks obtained by the Theo Epstein regime.
  • Free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is scheduled to work out with the Tigers, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press.
  • Free agent first baseman Albert Pujols says he’s sticking with agent Dan Lozano, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The agent has fired back against an article on Deadspin that portrays him in an unforgiving manner.

If the Tigers are looking at Yoenis Cespedes, why aren’t the Orioles? The Tigers are always looking to improve and the Orioles are always looking. Come on Duquette stop cutting bait and start fishing.

Also, I read Alex Speier’s article and it’s quite interesting. I can’t say I read his articles all the time, but when I do, they are always a good read.

Anyway, Orlando Cabrera for Ellsbury and Lowrie, boy I could go for that all day. The probable was the best move Epstein did. Come on Orioles and Duquette do something for once!

Backwards thinking? Ells and Lowrie were the two players the Sox drafted with the picks they got in compensation for the Angels signing Cabrera. Dude is acting as if they were traded or something.

I wasn’t acting… Semantics are the bane of my existence. You both know what I meant. They let Cabrera go and they got Lowrie and Ellsbury through the draft as compensation. Maybe, John and Bleacher aren’t Cespedes fans, I have no idea.

The Orioles aren’t getting any better anytime soon lol no one can save them now… it’s going to be awhile. Unless they pick up this kid, Fielder or get more starters to help Guthrie out.

If by “more starters to help Guthrie out” you mean “three superior starters so that Guthrie can be the 4 that he actually is,” then I agree.

that deadspin article about “Lie”zano was murderous.  Matthew McCougnahey (sp?) should play this roachbag in a movie.

Those revelations in the Lozano article were about as anti Pujols public image as is possible.  Either this is a big time smut campaign, or Albert is incredibly naive. Or the third option is that Albert is a fraud. I find that hard to believe, but after Tiger nothing is written in stone, or maybe stoned. Have to admit that it was my first time visiting Deadspin and judging from the caliber of articles, it may be my last. As a fan, I would rather not pay attention to that side of their lives, if possible. The way I figure it, next time you’re in a crowd, take a 360 degree look around and you’ll see many who are corrupt in one way or the other. Since filing for free agency, we are sure to learn a lot about Albert. I hope we don’t get too disappointed.

If the Tigers know what is good for them they would go and sign this guy pronto. then attempt to trade for Prado with Young being a part of the deal. Then if they could sign a solid/decent 4 or 5 starter (lefthanded preferably) and scoop up a couple of the releivers that are out there, they would be set to make a run.
