Cardinals, Furcal Close On Two-Year Deal

By Mike Axisa | December 9, 2011 at 1:31pm CDT

1:31pm: Furcal's two-year deal will "likely" come in around $14MM, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

1:26pm: The two sides are "finishing up" talks on a two-year deal, a source tells Morosi (via Twitter).  Furcal's deal will be worth more than $12MM, Morosi tweets.

11:32am: The Cardinals and Rafael Furcal are making progress towards a new deal reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). It would rule out another possible destination for Jimmy Rollins, mentions Rosenthal.

Furcal, 34, hit .255/.316/.418 with seven homers in 217 plate appearances after being traded to St. Louis at the deadline last year. He was said to be seeking a multi-year contract last month. Furcal recently underwent an appendectomy but is expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training.

Are they working on a deal for the guy who’s gonna play the 90 games Furcal misses?

They already have that guy. Tyler Greene would have a better shot to earn the starting job with a good spring in a lesser organization. He has nothing left to prove at AAA but he hasn’t done much in STL. Some think he’ll perform better with LaRussa gone. Others think he’s a AAAA player. Either way, signing Furcal or someone of that ilk will give them more time to evaluate Greene or ease him in slowly.

A lot of Cardinals fans believe Ryan Jackson (AA last season) will be the starting shortstop in 2013 anyway, so signing a ML-ready shortstop doesn’t have to be a long-term deal.

Greene is out of options anyway, so he has a good chance to be on the team, unless he does really bad in camp and then get released or traded. Cardinals are said to be going to non-tender both Theriot and Schumaker. Also, in the games Greene has played in the MLB, he hasn’t shown much and seems to have bad defense. Maybe, Ozzie Smith can teach Greene how to play defense (I know Smith is going to make an appearence in spring training, along with Herzog).

If the Cards sign Furcal I think it says a lot about how Cards management view Greene.  It may not be TLR that doesn’t think Greene can cut it as an everyday SS. Maybe Mo doesn’t either….

I like Furcal for the Cards, and I also like Beltran. The need someone else now that Albert’s gone. The pitching will get a boost with Wainwright coming back.

So if Furcal signs I would assume the next move would be for Beltran since a Hanely trade and Rollins signing would be out of the question. However, could Rollins play 2nd?

Furcal, Rollins, Berkman, Holliday, Beltran, Freese, Jay, Molina, Pitcher?

Maybe a Wainwright, Carpenter, Oswalt, Garcia, Westbrook/Loshe/Lynn/Miller rotation

I’d go 2 years with a club option. We have Craig, Adams, Taveres comin up and I don’t want any of them blocked. Plus, he’s 33-34 so I don’t love a 3 year deal. It might cost that though.

They are projecting Descalso as the everyday 2nd baseman. Which I like if we sign Beltran. That gives us killer defense in the middle infield, and plenty of offense to make up for Furcal and Descalso, who are average MLB hitters at best. Also, when Allen Craig comes back, we will have a lot of power on the bench everyday, and it will give him time to develop a little more while Beltran plays out his short term contract.

      So, my lineup would be…

      1. Furcal – SS
      2. Jay – CF
      3. Holliday – LF
      4. Berkman – 1B
      5. Beltran – RF
      6. David Freese – 3B
      7. Yadier Molina – C
      8. Daniel Descalso – 2B
      9. Pitcher

Clearly the Central favorite, assuming Fielder leaves the Brew Crew.

I am shocked (as an outsider) that they are doing this.  I put Furcal up there with Reyes on the slipping on a banana peel list.  The guy is always hurt.  He’s okay when healthy but nothing great.  I am shocked that, after losing Pujols, they won’t try to give their fans SOMETHING as a consolation prize, such as Rollins.

mmmm, when Furcal came last season to the Cardinals he played a big role for us in getting the team going. Furcal is a good lead off hitter when, healthy. Yes, he didn’t get many hits for the Cardinals, but when he did they turned out to be big hits, and he plays defense about a lot better as any shortstop the Cardinals have had in the past few seasons. Furcal started the “Happy Flight” chant. That seemed to do well with the team, if he’s back, I am all for it. Since he was good in the clubhouse. And maybe with a full year under McGwire, Furcal can start hitting better. In the playoffs, it seemed like he was trying to go for a home run, when he’s small, and shouldn’t be looking to be hitting a home run.

Sorry but anything over 3 years, 33 million for Rollins is an overpay and that mostly definitely includes any option for a fourth year.   If Furcal signs with St. Louis, Phillies ends up with no competition for Rollins services.  I can see Amaro panicking anyways and giving him a big contract.

You obviously haven’t been following the situation with the Cardinals at all.  Fielder AND Rollins? I don’t think so.  How much would that cost per year for the two of them? probably 35-38 million.  Add in Furcal for the year and that jumps up to 40+ million in added payroll for this year.  Also, Theriot has very little to zero trade value, and will most likely be non-tendered.

As for Fielder, Boras is his agent. And as of now Boras might try to get a Pujols like contract for Fielder.
