Giants “Far Down The Road” On Two Trades

By Luke Adams 2 | December 6, 2011 at 8:45pm CDT

8:45pm: One of the proposals is believed to be Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez for Angel Pagan, tweets Baggarly. That would match up with the two-for-one rumors we heard earlier about the Mets.

8:42pm: The Giants are "far down the road" on two trade proposals and GM Brian Sabean thinks the team may make a move tonight, according to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News (on Twitter). The proposed moves don't involve Jed Lowrie, Carlos Quentin, or Martin Prado, three names that have surfaced in recent trade rumors, adds Baggarly.

With rumors swirling that the Mets are also close to making a deal for a reliever, and the Giants said to be entertaining offers for Ramon Ramirez, it's possible the Mets could be on the other end of one of San Francisco's two proposals. That's my own speculation, however.

The Giants need to draw 3.3 million fans to cover payroll in 2012. They drew 3.4 in 2011. Bay’s huge contract doesn’t fit with them. They have little wiggleroom as far as adding salary is concerned. You can thank Barry “”$126 million” Zito for that!

SF/Mets Ramirez deal is also what came to mind when I read the Mets are looking at acquiring a reliever who needs a change of scenery.

Here, have this Andres Torres for a nearly identical player PLUS a competent reliever!

Pagan has had 4 solid years on the Mets. While I will always love Andres for what he gave us in 2010, he has only had one decent year in the majors so is not a nearly identical player.

except Torres is slightly better and younger. The difference between Pagan and Torres is probably worth Ramon Ramirez. Its more of a lateral move than a game changer

I disagree, Pagan is clearly the better player. I also hope that this is an indication we are getting Beltran back.

Pagan is younger. Torres with a career .244/.318/.721 line over 7 seasons and 1423 PA. While Pagan has a career .279/.331/.750 in 1994 PA over 6 seasons. So Pagan is better offensively and defensively.

WTF Mets. Ramon Ramirez and Andres Tores? Really? Why not just let Pagan rebuild some value and then trade him for a prospect?

I hate being a Met fan.

Obviously you didn’t watch Pagan last year.  The Mets were willing to just non-tender Pagan if they could have found another CF.  So, they get Torres to start the year until Nieuwenhuis is ready to assume the starting role, and Ramirez for a bullpen that blew 21 games after the 7th inning.  How this isn’t a good move for the Mets is beyond me.

Pagan can play RF to and the Giants have other CF for the future.

If the Giants want to keep Lincecum long term they better figure out a way to get the offense going. If they dont he will go year to year until he is a free agent and sign with an offensive team. Lincecum has a WS ring, 2 cy youngs, all the guy needs is a team to give him run support and he can win 20 games a year.

ARE YOU KIDDIN ME. RAMIREZ A QUALITY RELIEVER FOR ANOTHER AARON ROWAND/ANDRES TORRES. GET A DAM POWER HITTER SOYOU PITCHING STAFF DOESNT HAVE TO PITCH 8 INNINGS JUST SO THEY HAVE A CHANCE TO GET A WIN,

This trade should not affect whether the Giants try to resign Beltran. If we don’t resign Beltran our offense is going to really struggle

yeah good point, torres was a one hit wonder, thank him for that. losing ramirez is tough but pagan is more productive than torres. His career numbers are an upgrade

I love this trade. 30 years old, can play CF in a big park, over the last three years (1,400 AB), he holds a .282 avg, .337 obp and 70 stolen bases. For a team that looks to lock most of its money up attempting to sure ups it’s rotation, you have to love these moves… Melky Cabrera in LF, Angel Pagan in CF, Nate Schierholtz in RF, not only have you added a little bit of pop in Cabrera and some much needed speed with Pagan, but the defense in the OF is top notch. Good moves by Sabean.

I want to know the other trade. I am scared it is Huff for Figgins. Not sure if I like that. It saves more money and makes 1B a Belt/Posey/Pill platoon, but not sure if Figgins is worth anything other than speed nowdays.

I would love for it to be a crazy, off-the-wall, out of nowhere deal, but I don’t see that happening. There are very few SS available and that should be the #1 priority now. Get a Right Handed hitting SS, preferably young, to platoon with Crawford.

Pagan makes a lot of mental mistakes.  If he can eliminate them then SF has a good player.  But, he’s probably more of a 4th OF at this point.  Mets did this more for Ramirez.  They blew 21 games that they led in 7th or later last year.  Torres will start in CF until Nieuwenhuis is ready.

This is just to get some salary off the books. Look at numbers all you want, but Torres and Pagan are very similar. They gave up Ramirez because he is the most expendable guy in their bullpen. It makes sense. This trade does not mean Beltran is gone. It means Cody Ross is definitely gone. If they’re going use Pagan as a fourth outfielder instead of an everyday guy, it’s a good trade for SF.

Mets needed bullpen arms, so it works for them.  Torres will start the year as the starter but Mets will use him as 4th OF once Nieuwenhuis is ready.  Pagan is best served as 4th OF, so sounds like move should benefit both teams.
