Mets Interested In Cody Ross

By Mark Polishuk | January 22, 2012 at 3:57pm CDT

SUNDAY: Andy Martino of the New York Daily News gets the feeling that the Mets' level of interest in Ross isn't very strong right now, and that there is certainly nothing imminent (Twitter link).

SATURDAY: The Mets are "making a run at signing" free agent outfielder Cody Ross, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (Twitter link).  Ross would give the Mets depth at all three outfield positions, join ex-Giants teammate Andres Torres in a center field platoon or join Scott Hairston as right-handed complements to the left-handed hitting Lucas Duda in right field.

The Braves, Rockies, Reds and Athletics have all shown some interest in Ross this winter, though the latter two teams have already largely addressed their outfield needs.  We heard last month that the Rockies would look at Ross only if Seth Smith was dealt, so now that Smith has been sent to Oakland, Colorado could have renewed interest.

Ross, 31, hit .240/.325/.405 in 461 plate appearances for the Giants last season.  He was reportedly looking for a two-year contract, but with his market thinning out, he may have to settle for a one-year pact.

This is the full quote from Duquette when asked about Prince Fielder. Now while I don’t consider Fielder and Ross similar, however, I do consider Ross a star that I certainly could identify with. So Duquette, if you want to make “Lefty” happy sign Ross and live up to your quote, if not I hope the Mets do sign him!

Duquette was asked about the Orioles chance to sign Prince Fielder: “Do you think he would look good in Camden Yards? I don’t know about that one, but I do know if you have a staple in the middle of your lineup it’s a lot easier. Are we going to get him? I don’t know. But if we don’t get him, we’ll look for somebody like him and we’ll certainly do our best to give you guys some stars players that you can identify with.”

Why couldn’t they make a run at oswalt? Besides the whole crippling poverty thing.

Because Oswalt lacks the necessary grission Ross would bring to the proverbial table. Plus, Oswalt can’t drive in RBIs, which measure wins, but Ross can.

Will forever be remembered as a hero among Giants fans. His story for the 2010 is one for the ages. Giants literally received him for nothing at all and he became the Giants best offensive player for a handful of games. Baseball is truly an amazing game.

Yup, like throwing millions at Rowand and Zito to produce nothing except a financial burden for the Giants…

Well that didn’t last long to get shot down. Is this a coincidence that all the rumored players that the Mets were interested in this offseason were shot down almost immediately?

If Cody Ross is interested in staying healthy, he won’t be interested in the Mets, lol.

Ross must enjoy playing at horrible offensive stadiums. Might as well sign a 1 year deal here, then go to San Diego, then oakland to finish the rounds, maybe add Seattle to the mix if he wants to shoot himself in the foot and never again put up good numbers and be able to even get the chance to flash that power he showed a few years back at Land Shark.

All the Mets need if they get Ross is Aaron Rowand.  Then they can trot out the same OF that made Giants cry for most of last year.  OK, that’s not true.  Andres Torres still had some fans despite his struggles in 2011.
