Orioles Sign Armando Galarraga

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 17, 2012 at 11:33pm CDT

The Orioles signed Armando Galarraga to a minor league contract, according to the transactions page at CBS Sports. SFX represents the 30-year-old right-hander.

Galarraga struggled through the 2011 season after an eventful 2010 campaign in which he came within one out of throwing a perfect game for the Tigers. Galarraga, who was traded from Detroit to Arizona last January, posted a 5.91 ERA with 5.9 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 in 42 2/3 innings for the D'Backs in 2011. He also made five Triple-A starts, allowing 24 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings.

Not a bad guy to bring in and The Duke always was slick at finding people on the trash pile, then resurrecting those careers.. Lee Tinsley, Brian Daubach etc..

His problem was getting carried away and filling up the roster with too many of those types.

His problem was getting carried away and filling up the roster with too many of those types. It’s like Déjà vu all over again! Combined with the fact that Peter Angelos has no clue about such things, the Orioles are right back where they started in 5th place. To be honest, they didn’t have much traction to begin with anyway. Lastly, Angelos will never spend again to help out the cause. In other words, Angelos is Worthless to Orioles Fans everywhere!

PS Maybe, I will send the Warehouse a case of snickers bars, the O’s aren’t going anywhere for awhile.

PPS MLB TR needs a writer to cover the breaking Orioles News earlier. Having a news blurb released 12:33 EST is no good. A lot of us downtrodden fans are already in bed.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Duquette signing but it appears he’s doing things right so far (except for that weird Teagarden trade). Why not fill the roster up with the washed up, downtrodden, and never has been? Its not like the Orioles have any major league ready superstars (and the non-superstars have mostly been a disappointment), and spending $25 million a year, or even $10 million, on a first baseman or number 1 starter who will be 35 by the time we field a competitive team is simply a waste. It’s going to be years before the Orioles revamped farm system and new international scouting start churning out major league level talent, why not save the money and try to find a few stopgaps in the meantime. And if Dana Eveland bumps out Jake Arrieta to the bullpen, so be it, if not you release him and nothing lost. Best case scenario we find one “diamond” and he has a couple of semi-acceptable ML seasons or is flipped for a prospect at the trade deadline.

He gave up too much in the Teagarden trade in my eyes, but in the end it probably won’t put the organization back any.  Regardless, I think Buck really wanted Teagarden.

Exactly . The Orioles have lost 10 players off last years opening day roster . More will follow as Matuz , and Tillman are likely to start the season at AAA . And Brian Roberts can’t sign autographs , so I am betting he will be on the DL to start the season 😉

So we have turned over half the 25 man roster from last year and all we have to show for it is Teagarden , 2 Japanese imports ( Chen & Wada ) and a bunch of people I had never even heard of . ( Eveland , Antonelli etc )

So this team could be even worse than last years team , which was the worst O’s team I have seen as a life long , 39 year old Oriole fan.

      Yikes and Gadzooks !

I wouldn’t say that now. He really does have an eye for those waiver wire/released pile type of players and finding 1-3 gems, but like i said, he tends to want to stick with more than the ones who succeed for far longer than it seems he should sometimes.

The International market is (was) his forte, so maybe the Asian imports will shine and look for him to scout well the Caribbean countries if Angelos will allow him to spend much.

The Duke is probably just trying ATM to fill holes with his “refugee” signings and have a feeling that Showalter will be of a stronger mind to let him know who is worthy of a spot and who is not than the affable Kevin Kennedy was, who Duke had as a manager while he was “piling on” many of those caliber players.

Orioles add an incentive to Galarraga’s deal that states that they won’t make him pitch in any games that Jim Joyce is umping

It’s actually already a rule. Jim Joyce cannot work the plate (or first I’m guessing) if Armando is on the mound. Think the Jim Wolf rule.

It is only a rule because the two are in conjunction with a book they are writing, the Imperfect Game has nothing to do with it.  Since the MLB considers them business partners, they can not be on the field at the same time.

This is a great idea… a pitcher who couldn’t handle the NL West, lets give him a shot in the AL East! They’re kind to pitchers right?

the O’s don’t have a shot in the AL East anyways, so it’s not like they are risking their chances of winning by bringing him in

“Anyway” is an adverb, and it means regardless or in any event:
“Marshall’s grades have slipped, but he plans to apply to Harvard anyway.”
“Any way” is a paired adjective and noun meaning any particular course, direction, or manner:
“Chloe is willing to help Marshall prepare for the SAT in any way she can.
“Then we have “anyways,” a colloquial corruption of “anyway.” It’s universally considered nonstandard and should be avoided altogether. It might help to remember that “anyway” is an adverb, and adverbs can’t be plural.

See what happens is sometimes during a 162 game season, starting pitchers get injured(I know Im shocked), this is a guy you stick in Triple AAA, and call up if needed.

The AL Central doesn’t have anything to do with it.

And no that’s not true, the NL West has 2 MABYE 3 legitimate contenders while the AL Central is still anyone’s game (maybe except for the Royals, they’re going to be really good in a few years I just don’t know if they are quite there yet).

With stats like that he should have teammates who dont even know who he is, but I doubt there is a person in profesional baseball who hasnt heard of him. Could he possibly have a mini “brings fans to the park” effect that Super stars have?

Quite honestly, Jim Joyce is probably a blessing in disguise for Galarraga. People have already forgotten about Dallas Braden’s perfect game from the same year, but they sure as hell remember Gallaraga was robbed. Plus, the way Gallaraga and Joyce handled it was such a great story. Both class acts.

Honestly, for my money, Galarraga is probably the most likeable player in all of baseball because of the incident.

Well, Tigers fans will remember him. Not just for the imperfect game. If he wouldn’t have pitched well for the 2008 team, they may have lost 100 games. With that “amazing on paper” roster.

This could be a great sign. Hew never fit in with Arizona for some reason and his totally lost his command.

I still think in the years to come the Joyce decision will get over turned.

Actually he fit in pretty damn well for a while.  Check out the numbers he put up in his rookie season.

He struggled after that, but they’ve had worse back of the rotation starters over the years.
