Phillies Release Joel Pineiro

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 19, 2012 at 9:23am CDT

The Phillies announced that they released right-hander Joel Pineiro. The Wasserman Media Group client signed a minor league deal with the Phillies in January and would have earned $1.5MM on the MLB roster.

Pineiro started 24 games for the Angels in 2011, posting a 5.13 ERA with 3.8 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 145 2/3 innings. There wasn't room for the 33-year-old on the Phillies' staff, however. As a veteran player who had a Major League deal in 2011, Pineiro would have obtained $100K if the Phillies had assigned him to the minor leagues.

Not really that much of a surprise.

Seriously? How did he drop off so quickly?  Padres should check in with his agent. That’s who I originally thought would be a good match because of Petco and rebuilding his value.

He’s been a scrub for most of his career. Dave Duncan was only briefly able to turn him into a serviceable pitcher. He’s just reverting back to his usual self.

His 08 season (as a Cardinal) was very similar to last year. He was solid in 2010 with LAA. He hasn’t pitched that bad in Spring either, from what I understand.

He had 2 1/2 well above average years in Seattle too. Granted those were 10 years ago, but still he wasn’t a scrub for all of his career. 🙂

I have a strange feeling about him ending up back in Boston.

You mean the Joe Blanton that helped them win the WS in 2008?

Boston been known for “looking into”, “checking on”, “watching” and “got their radar on” various pitchers this off season and spring training.  I wonder what catchy phase or word of the day will describe what they will be doing when it comes to Pineiro?  How about “gotta have”?

If they were smart it would be “ignore”.

He would be an interesting pickup. for alot of teams. Hes definetly been an innings eater and would make a nice #5 starter. I would say the jays could have limited interest in him. However not to sure he is any better then what they have now in mcgowan. and with endless talent on the rise in toronto. it may just be that the jays are only interested in stud pitchers at this point.

Innings eaters have more than 2 – 200 inning seasons in a 12-year career.

They’re clearing out any veteran minor-league pay commitments for a little more payroll wiggle room, since they obviously need to go shopping for an Utley replacement. They needed to get a legitimate starting 2B/3B option before they were desperate, though. Now it’s going to cost them dearly.

Bucs gotta be looking into him if McDonald has another lousy start.

If the Bucs signed him, I would only feel comfortable with a minor league contract.  I wouldn’t want to risk a prospect over signing a declining player.

Agreed. A flyer on Piniero at this point would be fairly low risk and logical. It gives the team some added depth should Morton not be fully healthy and McDonald not harness his control (which, based on Hurdle’s recent comments, he’s been less than thrilled at what he’s seen).

Rumor had it that the Bucs were also looking for more pitching last week.

That tells me the Phillies won’t be shopping Blanton as bait for a replacement at 2B.  If Piniero was half decent they could have buried him as the 5th starter after Worley and moved Blanton for payroll space and a spot for a backup at 2B who could be starting on Opening Day.

If they trade Blanton, Kendrick would be the #5 starter.

I think even if they move Blanton, they would have tried Piniero as a starter because of his history.  Since arriving in St. Louis in 2007, Piniero started in 115 of his 119 appearances.  Kendrick would have kept his swing man role if Piniero had anything left in the tank.  Now with Piniero gone it doesn’t matter.

He had 2 solid seasons from 2009 to 2010… I would pick him up, specially if he would be willing to sign a minor league contract

I liked Pineiro in 2010. I think the Mets should offer him a major league deal similar to the deal Alderson offered Chris Capuano last season, something around two million dollars with incentives. Omar was interested in Pineiro as a free agent but he signed with the Angels instead. And he would probably pitch better than Mike Pelfrey.
