Poll: Should The Pirates Trade Mitch Keller?

By Nick Deeds | June 30, 2025 at 10:17am CDT

The second year of the Paul Skenes era in Pittsburgh is not going well. The Pirates are currently 35-50, leaving them buried in both the NL Central and the Wild Card race. The Bucs stand as one of the few clear sellers this summer, and it seems as though the team is operating with very few untouchables. One of the names that’s gotten the a good bit of buzz this summer is right-hander Mitch Keller, who has drawn attention as one of the few established, controllable starting pitchers with a chance to be dealt.

The Cubs have come up as a potential suitor for Keller, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported yesterday that the sides have been discussing a deal for more than a week. That’s not necessarily an indication that a trade, whether with the Cubs or otherwise, is particularly close. Still, it lends credence to the idea that the Pirates are serious in their willingness to consider moving the right-hander. That’s at least a mild surprise, given that he’s in just the second season of a five-year contract, but there’s a case to be made that the Pirates should capitalize right now.

After all, Keller is making $54.5MM over the final three years of his contract. That’s a below-market sum for a solid mid-rotation veteran but still steep for the perennially low-budget Pirates. Pittsburgh has already assembled an impressive group of young pitching talent with Skenes, top prospect Bubba Chandler, and injured-but-talented righty Jared Jones leading the pack. With affordable arms like Mike Burrows, Braxton Ashcraft and Thomas Harrington already having debuted, and well-regarded prospect Hunter Barco not far behind, the Pirates are amassing some enviable pitching depth. (That doesn’t include left-hander Bailey Falter, who’s affordably controlled for three more seasons.)

Pittsburgh would arguably be better off spending Keller’s salary on some sorely needed offense. Teoscar Hernandez, for example, signed with the Dodgers for a similar amount: $66MM over three years, with enough money deferred to lower the net present value of the contract to just under $60MM. Gleyber Torres, Tyler O’Neill, Christian Walker, and Pete Alonso are among the other hitters who signed for $60MM or less guaranteed this past winter. Not all of those deals have worked out, and there are always dangers of spending on even mid-range free agents like this, but the Pirates could have made reasonably competitive bids for some notable veterans on the open market with a sum comparable to what they still owe Keller.

Aside from the ability to reallocate financial resources, moving Keller would surely come with a solid return. Cost-controlled starting pitching is typically the most valuable commodity on the trade market, and while Keller is hardly elite given his 109 ERA+ this year, his affordable contract and year-to-year stability would give the acquiring club additional long-term certainty in their rotation that a rental pitcher like Zac Gallen could offer.

Using the Cubs’ system as an example due to their status as a rumored suitor for Keller, it’s easy to see why the Pirates might be willing to deal within the division. Chicago has a number of quality position player prospects knocking on the door of the big leagues. Outfielder Owen Caissie has 12 home runs and a 125 wRC+ at Triple-A Iowa as a 22-year-old this year. Catcher/DH Moises Ballesteros, outfielder Kevin Alcantara, and infielder James Triantos are all close to MLB-ready as well. Triantos’ stock is down after a difficult and injury-marred start to the 2025 season, but a package centering around one of those other young hitters could be appealing for a Pirates club that is looking to players like Andrew McCutchen and Spencer Horwitz to fill out the middle of its order at present. Other clubs with upper-level position player prospects have undoubtedly inquired on Keller, too.

As appealing as some of the arguments for trading Keller may be, there are real concerns that would come with making a deal. Keller was once looked at as a potential No. 2 starter during his prospect days and, while he hasn’t lived up to that potential yet, he’s not far removed from a three-WAR season wherein he struck out 25.5% of his opponents. His 4.21 ERA that year was pedestrian, but his 3.83 SIERA was 18th-best in baseball among qualified starters, just behind Logan Gilbert and ahead of players like Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, and Dylan Cease. Keller is still just 29 years old, and he certainly wouldn’t be the first pitcher to take a step forward in the middle of his prime. If the Pirates believe Keller still has another gear, they might prefer to hold onto him in hopes that he can unlock it and increase his trade value or his value to the Pirates themselves.

Aside from the possibility of selling at less than peak value, it’s worth noting how much uncertainty there is when it comes to developing pitching. The Tigers drafted Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize back in 2018 but only began to truly see the fruits of that labor last year after both players were derailed by injuries early in their career. Jones is already recovering from elbow surgery, and with pitching injuries seemingly more frequent than ever, it can be hard to part with a steady arm like Keller. Given the soaring price of pitching in free agency, the Pirates would likely have to keep scoring deals on low-cost veterans like they did with Andrew Heaney this year in order to fill out and create depth behind their young rotation mix.

How do MLBTR readers think the Pirates should act regarding Keller? Should they move to trade him in order to help boost the offense for their young arms, or should they hang onto him as a veteran presence and hope he can increase his value from here? Have your say in the poll below:

Are there players you want from the Dodgers versus another team like the Yankees, Phillies, or Red Sox? Why make the Dodgers better than they already are?

As to why, there’s a ton of reasons why it makes no sense to trade Skenes now. His value will only increase barring injury which you cannot time the market on (but armchair GMs on this site seem to think you can). If we don’t compete next year, I can see more of an argument to move him at next year’s deadline but there is no deal that could be made that actually make us more competitive right away so we should see if they can actually have a better start next year. I know people seem to think that the Pirates have never been competitive in the past ten years but, as I’ve said many times before, we were in the playoff conversation this time last year and up until the end of July.

And I know that people for whatever reason feel bad for Skenes for being on a losing team but based on the competitor he has shown himself to be, I think he’s attracted to the possibility of actually leading a team to the playoffs on his back rather than being an arm in the midst of a plethora of other arms on a competitive team like the Dodgers or other big market team that would be the only ones who could afford to acquire him at this point. I think he could be excited by the possibility of being the biggest fish in a small pond that makes a legitimate run and I think we have the chance to do that next year (with a new GM).

          @SandlotBenchWarmer

It really doesn’t matter. I’m just putting something out there for a conversation.

I don’t feel bad for Skenes and know he’s going to get his bag at some point but I doubt the Pirates are paying him that contract in the future. Sure, you could say, let’s trade him next year and that’s true too. I’m just thinking, if the plan isn’t to invest in the team right now, you might as well cash in on the guy to fill your roster with top talent that’s also cheap vs. 1 pitcher that is currently cheap but running out of time.

Ultimately, I don’t care what the Pirates do with him. They can wait till the end of his current contract and just let him walk but I feel that would be the worse decision. Who knows? Maybe ownership will have a change of heart and give him a bag of money to stay with the Pirates.

Yeah I definitely don’t think they’ll just let his contract run out and have him become a free agent. Pirates ownership makes dumb decisions all the time but even they are not that dumb. They’ll get some sort of return from him but I was just saying that it makes much more sense to trade him next year than this year. The whole trade him this year conversation seems to be concocted by baseball media that (1) need something to talk about and this is a juicy story and (2) want to cover a more interesting big market team to drive revenue and the more they have to talk about small market teams like the Pirates because Skenes is legitimately a generational talent, the less money they make. Trading Skenes right now makes next to no fiscal sense from the Pirates vantage point and I think baseball media knows this but needs to perpetuate the story.

Old York- I think that it is a sticking point of small market fans about trading him to a big market team because only they have the money to pay the superstars.
They will eventually get him anyway as the Dodgers have the excess money to hoard many of the very best players.

True. It’s unfortunate that the players don’t stay with the same team their whole career but the players fought for free agency and this is what we got. I don’t think there is any situation where we have free agency and players sticking around with their same team for the whole career unless the player just wants to play the game and not care about money.

“Not care about money” is really not the question. Players who sign free agent contracts get paid more than adequately. The questions should be how much do you really need (as opposed to want) and how much is enough. Unfortunately, we live in a culture that says there is no such thing as enough and that you always need more.

That’s it. Most of these ballplayers are in it for the money. If they can put up big numbers they’ll get the big payday. Teams are willing to pay up for top talent.

Can’t argue with your point Skeptical but the players are also aware they get a disproportionate amount of money based on the money in the game so if the difference is staying with one team and getting a lot less you are going to be looked at as negatively impacting the market for players moving forward. It’s not necessarily that players or fans should look at it as “good, he got 300M dollars” but as “good, some of that ridiculous amount of money is going towards the people who actually contribute to the value of the sport”.

I would imagine that what I said above about players is equally true of owners. If one owner starts spending more money than his market/revenue would dictate would be the approximate norm than other owners would, by some, be expected to spend a higher percentage of their earnings as well. But in terms of the value of the team it’s interesting to wonder if, for say the Pirates, the team is not actually more valuable (at least on the market) for having a player like Skenes in the organization, even though the payroll would be higher and it would perhaps be financially crippling in terms of percentage owed to one player. I’m no expert but it would seem assets would be a key value in most companies but in baseball it seems like it’s often the opposite. But I really don’t know much about all this.

I think most players play it for the love of the game and that they are competitors.
They stick with the game and all of the low points and distractions because of the money.
I do not begrudge any of them in making the money.
MLB,unlike the three other major sports, though caters to it because the large market teams bring in by far the most revenue for the sport. It will always be weighted in this manner because the time to change it has long since passed.

And what happens when that star goes south or gets seriously injured?
Ask Arte Moreno about Josh Hamilton
He obviously is not a representative sample but when a small market team does that they are doomed for several years.

York-They had a right to free agency.I remember the 60’s and 70’s and many of those players were stuck to one team for too many years.
They all should care about the money but some know that they could get more somewhere else but if they are given a fair contract they stay where they are.
To some it is important to be remembered very well by the fans and their team. That is the gift that keeps on giving.

THe value is insane on Skenes, but if anyone could do it it would be the dodgers. Even just Roki and Rushing likely get the pirates to the table to kick the tires on what else they could extract before the dodgers walked away.

Honestly, it makes sense. If the Dodgers are going all in for a few years, why not get one of the top SPs in the game right now? What are they going to do? Have some of these guys sit on the bench or waste their prime in the minors? If I’m the Dodgers, I’d at least call and see what the interest level is and where the conversation would start.

The Pirates at this point would have to get the haul that helped to win three super bowls.
The Cowboys got like six bona fide players and high draft picks from the Vikings for Hershel Walker and anything less would not get it done.
The players would have to be ML with at least one all star.
The minor leaguers would have to be in the top five team prospects and at least one in the top 10 ML prospects and another one in the top 30.
No one would probably do that for one player even a future HOFer like Paul Skenes.
It would have to be better than what the Nationals got for Juan Soto.

They will trade him two years before he is a free agent like they did with Cole.
This is what most small market teams do.
This is the way of MLB.
The Pirates have enough nightmares without trading a bona fide HOFer who always provides ink to an at best mediocre team.
No team can afford the numerous good players that the Pirates could honestly ask for to guarantee enough of a haul to significantly improve the Pirates by 10-15 games per year.
And prospects are only that.Until they produce in the ML’s they are suspects.

I don’t see why the Skenes package would have to be better than the Soto package that went to the Nationals. A pitcher only helps you every fifth day. A star position player can help your team every day in a variety of ways that a pitcher cannot. On top of that is the risk (or inevitability) of Tommy John which is an automatic Wipeout of 1.5 to 2 seasons. There is no comparable injury risk for a position player other than possibly ACL tear which is still rare and the downtime can be less than a year.

Without a doubt a trade package for a pitcher should be less than a star position player, even if it’s for more seasons of control. Maybe in that respect then it would behoove the Pirates to just hang on to Skenes for a couple more seasons and then see what happens.

Ignorant-I understand your points and do not necessarily disagree.
My point is that it would have to be a clear overpay like the Hershel Walker trade was because at this point the Pirates really do not need to trade Skenes and would receive all kinds of crap if they did and had not received an offer that they could not refuse.
If you trade him you better make sure that it turns the team from a below 500 team to a well above 500 team.
The Nationals knew that they were rebuilding after winning a World Series so they could take some chances.
The Pirates really cannot do that at this point especially after saying that they would not trade him since they really have not been good since 2015.

The problem MLB has is that they’ve allowed far too many MiLB teams to play in their league. I’m tired of watching MiLB players develop in the majors. I think the Dodgers and Yankees should be forced to remove their minor league teams from the league.

Stop this. The Dodgers do not have the Trade chips to do this unless you are talking about trading Roki Sasaki or Hyeseong Kim (more than likely both) which will never happen considering how much collusion LA did to get Roki. And I don’t care if what LA did wasn’t breaking any rules…the Dodgers knew they were getting him and Roki knew he wanted to be a Dodger. It would hurt their whole thing going in Japan to trade those two.

So if LA doesn’t have those trade chips…they really don’t have a package they could put together that would be worth it for the Pirates. This ain’t happening. And if the Pirate did take a lesser package for a Skenes, who is team controlled for the next 4 years, then I will give up all faith in baseball being a fair game.

It was always the plan to trade Keller. Give him a nice extension, hope he performs well, and trade him for a low level prospect before the back-end money kicks in.

yup- he is underpaid by 20-30 million over the remainder of his deal. That is top 50 prospect level. If someone really wants to go all in now, you may get a pair of top 100 prospects for him. The idea of building around Alcantara, Triantos, or Cassie was basically that they are likely to get a high minors top 100 guy plus some depth.

I have been reading on several websites that Cherington will demand either a top level prospect or a player who has several years of control and is major league ready
Cherington is trying to save his job, low level prospects won’t accomplish that

But does Cherington even know what a top prospect is? He sure hasn’t shown that he does in his time here
Should anyone in this roster be “untouchable?” Yeah, they swept a banged up Mets team but getting a boatload of good, young hitting prospects to rebuild yet again should be the goal, with a new GM

Remember when Cherington traded for Nick Yorke, who was essentially major league ready, but blocked in Boston? Then he seemed to give up on him completely after 11 major league games so he could give playing time to Tommy Pham?

Yorke started slowly this year and still is not doing great in AAA or he would have been called up already.
Frazier has been playing and hitting much better under Kelly and should get a decent mid level prospect at the trade deadline.
          Yorke will come up then.
Pham as a free agent had to start. He has clearly raised his game since he seemed to get his eyes straightened out.

Any “GM” worth his marbles would not voluntarily decide to go to work for Nutting. I would think Cherinton went to work for Nutting because it was the only GM job he could get. So I wouldn’t put too much faith in any trade package he gets to negotiate.

The problem with Nutting is he may not know nor have anyone who would know how to differentiate among the young guys.

Cherington has been good at signing free agent left handed pitchers.
Marte and Bell were salary dumps.
They got plenty of young players in these trades but none were developed.
Some of the minor trades were good.
His trades have clearly been below average.
The problem has been that he does not get ML ready players for the reasonably good players that you mention.

It’s just the pirates have pitchers ready to go. And besides Keller is better than 2-10…they don’t hit fir him.

I would not trade Keller unless I got good ML players in exchange, even if I had to sweeten the pot.
They need an outfielder plus a shortstop and third baseman.
Nobody is looking at Keller’s record this year.

Keller is a mid rotation guy. The 109 ERA plus means he is 9% better than average. He gets poor fielding behind him so the ERA is not that great, but put him on a team with good fielders and he will play up like a true #3 arm.

He will land a top 100 prospect in AAA alone. your team may not, but someone will want a #3 SP for 5-10m below market. The FA comp from last year would be Kikuchi (and Severino and the rest of that tier of SP) and they all got 3/70. So there is a lot of excess in 3/55

Closers tend to be a terrible use of your FA budget. Dropping over 10m per for under 100 innings is a hard pill to swollow. With that said, aside from the Chapman overpay, i have not seen a closer move for something that i would take in almost a decade.

If they can land something like Ballesteros and Triantos for Keller- the pirates would be crazy to pass it up. The cubs do not have the deepest farm system, but with the logjam they have in the OF, you may be able to get Triantos and Alcantrara- and that would be a good deal with 2 every day player types in AAA coming back.

The current core was just the wrong guys over and over again. With Skenes i would also understand going for high minors guys to have a run with Skenes still there.

No reason to ever rebuild for any team. At some point probably but now no. Too many stupid people running teams ago that can be taken advantage of.

Trading Keller Bednar even Reynolds wouldn’t be a rebuild. They have young pitching. Bullpen arms are easy to find. Above average outfielders are easy to find. Pirates have very few players they couldn’t be replaced. Pretty much just Skenes and Cruz.

Semantics. That’s all you’ve got here. You’re defining the idea of rebuilding by using other words.
Any new GM is going to look at the big league roster and then the farm. At that very point, putting together a road map is relatively easy, no matter what you want to call it. Tom-ay-to or to-maw-to. Same thing. And I’ve gotta say that you must see more in Cruz than I do.

Guys like Cruz and Skenes have a great deal of talent but in a franchise like this, they’re more valuable in what they can bring back. That is, if you have a competent GM who pays a little attention to baseball. Look, they’re not going to sign anyone and they’re more than a few pieces away from even being respectable. I don’t understand the logic of saying anyone here is untouchable.

They won’t bring anything back. Only a handful of teams have what it would take to get them and wouldn’t want to give it up. Pirates will get almost what they would get now few years down the road.

Pirates aren’t a bad team. Just poorly run. All they had to do was fire Shelton and sign 1 or 2 bats that cost 2 to 6 million.

Read that Nutting said in the press this year that he is refusing to trade Bednar.

Nutting is most likely the problem with the PIrates.
He is not an experienced POB, GM or even Scout of players. Yet,, as the guy signing the checks, Nutting has inserted himself into the Front Office and appears to
be insisting on some moves and vetoing other moves.

He may be the East Coast version of Arte Moreno
(Angels Owner who constantly meddles in Front Office decisions and won’t let the professional baseball people make baseball decisions.

Good luck getting a quality POB or GM when the Pirates owner sees himself as the POB and GM and sabotages Front Office decisions.

For a guy who watches baseball, you have a real set of rose colored glasses you need to part with. The Pirates “aren’t a bad team,” they’re a horrible team. Most of their wins can be chalked up to a good pitching staff, these past few games aside. Their fundamentals are ridiculously poor. Their overall hustle horrid although at least Donnie Kelly objects to it
They won’t sign talent. They have little on the farm. Just how are they supposed to improve? Magic?

The Pirates are currently 24-24 under Kelly and were 11-26 under Shelton.
They have scored 37 runs over the last 4 games and only given up 4.
On an otf day last week, Hayes flew to Houston to see his chiropractor who made adjustments to his back.
          Since then, he’s hitting over.
.400 with 2 doubles and has driven in 2 runs in three straight games.

They’re not the Rockies, I’ll grant you that but saying they are better than their record indicates doesn’t mean much. And at least Kelly seems to have a clue. That’s a nice change

Shelton with his inconsistent lineup, off days, bullpen usage destroyed this season. Players quit on him. Shelton quit. At least now they have a pulse.

They can have a winning record next year if they make the right moves.

My advice don’t sign the old blind outfielder. Sure he had a good week but doesn’t matter. The .194 average before that.

Winning record. This is the goal in the 21st Century.
Did they quit on Shelton, or is it that they weren’t required to hustle? They were allowed to admire long fly balls, have cell phones pop out of their pockets on the basepaths, have a handful of sunflower seeds while a ball is in the OF and you’re playing 3rd, or a catcher lolly-popping throws back to the pitcher with runners on base
Naw. They didn’t quit. It’s who they are. Cruz has proven it under Kelly, as well.
The inmates were running the asylum but the idea of “quitting” entails them having put forth maximum effort before. They never did.
But hey, I’ve quit on them

He is not as stern perhaps as he should be.
But when Cruz was coasting he was called on it.
I knew Shelton was not a ML manager after three years and Cherington should have known it too.
Cherington felt bad because he did not provide better players to Shelton.
They wasted the last two years because Nutting has no urgency to win.

Nope. Cruz, until his recent really bad slump, was easily our best talent and his numbers proved it. He was well above average in OPS+ which is one of the best actual stats to base performance.

His OPS+ is 104, so 4% above league average. Career 110. Not a superstar.

Best position player on the Pirates? Probably. That is like being the valedictorian of summer school.

Cruz ‘ best position would be first base where he can do the least damage and most good with an enviable stretch.
Donn Clendenon had one in 1966 when the Pirates set the ML record for double plays.
Cruz does not really have a baseball mindset. Is he a student of the game?Maybe, but maybe not.
I think that he could be a good CF if he had started his career there but he never wanted to get off SS where he was involved in more plays but made far too many errors
The Pirates hype him because, well, they are the Pirates and until Skenes came along who else did they really have to hype?
The Dodgers must have seen this in 2016 but in his defense he certainly has the physical talent maybe even to be great and that is what spurs fans to think of what could be.

I actually think the opposite. Other fans think he’s great because he hits the ball very hard and far but still has so much inconsistency in his game. Pirates need him to be a superstar type player and he’s a slightly above average starter.
I just watched a video from that Jim Riley guy who was going through trade scenarios and he values him highly.

Maybe you get impressed by exit velocities but he’s a study in how not to approach hitting. And I know CF is a new position but just how long is it going to be before he’s serviceable, at least?

You can have all the affordable pitching prospects you want it takes a set rotation of 4-5 SP to give you a chance day in and day out. As for the offense when they play against top tier teams they play up to their potential that tells you its a mind/game set issue and they BottomDollarBob has plenty of money to put into legit #1 position players/Bullpen help without over spending/trading on washed up talent.

While I get many/most teams will never be able to spend with the Dodger/Yankees/Mets as things are now….The fact they don’t even pretend to do anything but pocket the revenue sharing that is supposed to make things more balanced is shameful.

I could understand running lean for 3-4-5 years, trade MLB talent for prospects and then when things start to bloom use the $100s of millions saved to keep the talent around a bit and then cycle down again.

At some point you need to stop churning and establish your core. The Pirates need to keep him. For one thing, if they trade him just two years into the extension, then any future FA’s will be even less likely to sign with Pittsburgh.

Free agents already believe that. If anything, it will deter extensions, but that’s doubtful considering some youngins want guaranteed money. If they need to address it, they can include player options or NTCs to entice, when other teams won’t. While Keller could be a building block, he won’t be a top of rotation SP or sell many tickets to be worth the risk of the right trade package, which also help PIT go cheaper (Nutting’s goal).

One bat at the cost of giving up solid pitching will not make the Pirates into a contender, probably wouldn’t make the Pirates any better, most likely worse. The Pirates would need multiple bats if they trade away Keller or Falter. Keep Keller, trade Heaney.. Teams need not five quality starters, but six to seven to cover the inevitable injuries. The current Pirates resources suggest a team centered on pitching and defense, not offense. That is not to say that the offense could not be improved, but it should not be improved at the cost of pitching.

Too many posters subscribe to a single model of success. There are multiple roads to building a successful team.

I would really rather not trade Keller. He’s the definition of a rotation anchor. He’s pretty much a guarenteed quality start every outing, and in most cases, does better than that. The return would have to be for something pretty decent, like a player who already has MLB experience/success to fill the line-up. If you trade him for just prospects that are still a year or two (or more) away, you might as well just tear it all down again.

Wheeler / Sanchez / Suarez / Luzardo / Abel / Painter in the wings and Nola back in a matter of weeks. Just a silly trade suggestion that fails to take into account the other team.

Only need four starters in the playoffs, they likely aren’t in danger of losing out on a wild card so you’re probably right, it wouldn’t make much sense for the Phillies unless they value the buy and feel they are soft in the five, and it hedges any injury risk, a half season to play.

I also don’t want to trade Keller but it is hard to think about what a return for him would look like and, depending on what is offered, I could see an argument to trading him even though he’s a great arm to have in a rotation. As the article says, it’s hard to find a healthy arm in this market that is as controllable as Keller so I could see the Pirates having a hard time saying no if the return is good. But if it’s true that clubs want him and Bednar, then that return needs to be VERY good and I don’t see that happening. I think it’s much more likely that Heaney, IKF, and Hayes goes than Keller.

The issue is no teams are trading away big bats, and they prefer to trade prospects or blocked/mediocre guys most of the time. And most guys who make it to FA are flawed or strictly out of their price range. Pretty much only way they can get them is a lucky trade (Cruz for Tony Watson) or develop their own.

Or they can get better at developing, which clearly isn’t easy. I am sold on Gonzalez and Horowitz at this point as everyday players, but they are not big time offensive threats. There is a path to winning if everyone plays to potential but it’s razor thin. The Royals won last year with arguably a worse offense.

Neither will be all stars, nor big difference makers, but key parts of a winning team.
They gave up some decent pitchers for Horwitz but this guy has a nice swing and is a good first baseman.
He started off poorly but he had no spring training and on a new team and a young player it should be expected to take time to fit in.

You’re not going to acquire Hayes as a piece of the bench though because his salary is much too high. I like Shaw but he hasn’t shown he can hit in majors yet. Perhaps he will, I just think with Happ and Swanson’s production at the plate, you can’t really wait around. The Cubs need a starting pitcher or two (high quality arms, not a couple #3-4s) and possibly a reliever.

Jed, go get Mitch Keller and David Bednar. Give the pirates cash to pay for Keller’s remaining contract. Then send them Kevin Alcantara. Then go get Seth Lugo and Carlos Estrvez from the royals.

I hope the Pirates keep Keller. I would be nice if Pirates management and fans didn’t consider the team’s main role to be as a provider of players to other teams.

Well, they aren’t. There hasn’t been a big number of ex Pirates that became good, much less great, after leaving the Bucs. You can count them on two hands since 2012

The Pirates have traded away more good guys than they have tried to keep and build around since 2012, and that’s the point.

Maybe they suck at being a farm for other teams, they also suck at being a baseball team. Doesn’t mean they aren’t one, somehow.

The problem with the article and certainly with this exercise is that it assumes that should the Pirates trade Keller (or anyone really) then the money that was allocated to that player would then be reallocated to another – in this case a hitter more capable than most if not all of those currently on the roster. History, however, teaches us that the owner – Nutting – is not playing a zero sum game. He spends less today than he did 10 years ago – and that’s just based on straight numbers, not accounting for the past 10 years of inflation. His $100 (about) million dollar payroll of the mid to late 2010s is more than his $80 million dollar payroll now by far more than the simple $20 million dollar difference. He spends money only because he has to. He prefers to make a nice tidy annual profit, which he can do with a losing team. Sure, he could spend more, maybe have a winning team, but maybe make a smaller profit. While he might make even more thru increased ticket sales, match sales, etc., he might not. He is risk adverse, so he won’t do it. He has proven that for 20 years. He said early on, once the team turns the corner, the spending will go up. The team did, but the spending never happened, and the three year run of very good teams ended. Unless and until Nutting sells or undergoes a massive personal transformation and realizes that owning a sports team is a public trust, whether the Pirates trade Keller or anyone else is a discussion about nothing. When the public supports a team with a publicly financed stadium it is a trust. But because that trust is never memorized in the deals to build stadiums, it is not a legal trust but just an empty unenforceable promise. And when the owner has no plans to follow through with the promise, you end up with ongoing mediocrity. I’ve been a fan of the team since birth – literally my mom went into labor at Forbes Field. Nutting has ruined my love of my team and in part my love of the game itself.

The most salient response to the original question in every aspect from the description of Nutting on down. Trading Keller alone isn’t going to accomplish much when there just isn’t a supporting cast here. If Nutting isn’t going to spend, it’s either fans getting used to this type of team or pray for a new GM tasked with overhauling everything from the ground up and hoping for the best in 2030

And the sad part is, in my opinion Huntington before, and Cherrington now, were/are decent if not very good GMs. But you can’t go sign a player if the owner says no. So you take huge risks (the Archer trade for example) that are the only chance. When those trades inevitably fail, then suddenly the GM is an idiot. No. He was taking a huge gamble that might (5-10%) pay off. Because it was the only play. Without such trade risks, they can’t compete in the now. With such trades – probably not but maybe – while risking the future. It is true that money doesn’t buy everything. But the ongoing excellence of the LADs and NYYs is not because they have geniuses at the helm. It’s because they spend. And even if they spend poorly from time to time, the other spending covers it up. I would advocate for a fair system similar to the other leagues of revenue sharing and spending floors and caps. But since that won’t happen, the owners – they are all rich beyond imagination – who spend will win and compete, and those who don’t will smilie and say the right things and pocket their profits without any care that a professional sports team matters to its fan base. Maybe it shouldn’t. Why do people care about “their” team? I don’t know. But they do. I do. And I know I shouldn’t but I do. And I know “my” owner does not care about me or about “my (his)” team. And even knowing that I still care. But less each day, because eventually I will decide not to be a sucker. I quit going to games regularly. Now 1-2 a year at most. I quit cable. I don’t buy merch. And I don’t blame the players or the GMs. Just the owners. For failing as a group and Nutting in particular for being tone deaf to one of the best sports towns in the country.

The cubs would not be giving up on Shaw. They just need another infielder because what they currently have are weak. The cubs could also move Shaw back to 2nd if they move Horner in the off season. I also believe Horner has an expiring contract so we’ll see.

All depends on what the return would be. A single semi sure thing to be league average prospect and or a pair of pretty good prospects to get the ball rolling 50-55s at least.

Wouldn’t hurt to keep him or most others much. Team just needs some offense. If you can get that by trading Keller that’s fine but if not, hold and see what happens between now and spring

The Cubs would not go as high as Caissie for Keller, and, while I am weary of Hoyer’s prospect hoarding, I would agree that that would be an overpay. Kevin Alcantara would probably be an overpay too, but I think the Cubs might be more inclined to trade him.

Bucs need an MLB bat if they trade Keller. He’s much better than his record due to the lack of hitting. Get Abreu from Boston or Pages from LA. Not sure about trading with the Cubs making them better than they are in your own division. Prospects aren’t going to cut it with the years of control left with Keller. Heard the Cubs & a few other teams are interested in Hayes & Bednar. Not sure I’d move Bednar but they need a couple MLB bats

This team has the pitching to compete just need some hitters that are not at the end of their career.
If this team had money to sign Chapman then there is money available to be spent.

Trading Keller issues. (1) Contenders aren’t trading players that are contributing to them being contenders. Prospects??? Most top prospects don’t become top MLB players. (2) If they trade Keller, Bailey Falter becomes their #2 pitcher, with Mike Burrows up to #3. (Heaney will be gone). Trying to replace 2 starters with your minor league prospects seems like a lot to ask of them. The strength of the team (starting pitching) could very quickly become a weakness..

There is a reason why the age old saying “ you can never have too much pitching” is actually much wiser today than it was thirty years ago.
On the other hand when is Keller going to start developing those same problems and the Pirates get stuck with two years and $35M+?

Exactly. The Marlins arguably had much better pitching depth and and fell apart in less than one year. Stick to what your strength is and only make a deal if it makes your team better now. Replacing nearly 200 innings from Keller will not be easy when Heaney is traded and every young pitcher is on innings limits. Then we start seeing those bums make spot starts like last season and getting torched.

That leaves 1 spot for Bubba Ashcraft Mlod Barco Harrington Oviedo. With 5 for depth.

          True.
Cherington has been good at that.
          But the adage still applies.
You were correct in your physical assessment of Jones.
When will he be back and how good will he be?
Oviedo is still not back after almost two years. How good will he be?
Carmen wants to be a starter. And Cruz wanted to be a shortstop.
Bubba is admittedly a top talent. How will he be able to go for five innings for a while though? And when he does what happens against ML’ers the third time through the lineup?
Barco is starting to pitch in AAA like he did in AA.Will it be a similar progression in the ML’s or will he be more like Keller and have a slow one?
Harrington has been a bust this year.Give him more chances but he has shown nothing as of yet.
I say with Keller that they can trade him but only if they get two almost ready ML regulars at a position of need like SS,maybe 3B,and OF to put in RF.
And they put Keller’s money into a decent free agent at one of those positions.
I understand that they will not get a lot for Frazier,Pham,or Heaney, but I would not trade Heaney unless they get a bona fide prospect in the top ten of a good organizations system and the other two for a top twenty and that is only to open spots for Yorke,Suwinski, and Peguero or Alika who has been hitting extremely well the last month in AAA.
There is no guarantee that the Pirates can develop any of those position players received for those three to be free agents anyway and certainly none if the player is ranked less than that.

That’s Mike Tauchman. 2 million. That’s 2 million cheaper than Pham. Definitely would have signed him.

Also would have signed Grichuk or Hays. Grichuk I would still be under 500. But Hays I would be getting close. I preferred Grichuk but he loves Arizona so would have got Hays.

          295 .336 .568 .904 Hays

Imagine having 2 guys hitting close to 300 with 800 900 ops. Hays 5m 1 more than Pham.

Canha was awful May June. Who cares. DFA him. He signed a minor league deal. But in March April he hit….
          346 .400 .423 .823

So I got that performance until Horwitz was ready to come back. Perfect.

You aren’t supposed to hit on every single free agent. The ones making 2 3 4 5 million you are going to have much worse success rate. Just don’t put all your eggs in the Tommy Pham basket. He’s had a good week but what about the other 10 weeks?

Even if they loved Pham had to have him they could have got Tauchman instead of betting on Suwinski bounce back. Canha would have been awesome until Horwitz arrived. Everyone makes 700 800 k so 1 or 2 million is absolutely nothing.

These aren’t cherry picked names. I pounded the table hard for all of them.

What’s troublesome is all the “impact bats” they could have signed and how awful they have been. I wanted Tyler O’Neil or Christian Walker, both have been awful. Santander, terrible. Profar, suspended. This is the risk when it comes to free agency and why Nutting and Cherington are reserved with it.

They were not prepared for the loss of an average 1b and tried the same RF situation as last season. Frazier filled in admirably everywhere to ease the loss of Gonzalez but.l not enough.

I think that probably no more than 20-25% of free agents actually benefit the team close to what they are making.
They are generally in their early 30’s and if the money is high they may not realize it but they lose the extra incentive unless they are great competitors.

The flailing Pirates rebuild could be ready to bear fruit very soon if the Pirates received 4 or 5 very Talented prospects/position players/pitchers in return.

One thing that posters seem to forget about Nutting is that he does try to extend his own successful young players although with the idea that he can consider trading them once they get too expensive.
This is one of the reasons why he was at least somewhat aggressive with Reynolds,Keller, and Hayes.
He is not always successful, but more often so than signing older free agents who the Pirates do not have experience with.

Look, the blueprint is out there in TB and I believe this was to be their path. They just drafted poorly and were worse with development. Ok. Fine. So what happens now
First, you get rid of this GM and all of his people in scouting and player development
You bring in top people for all of those positions.
Then you make everyone available. Make sure you get value. Make sure you draft well and develop.
Again, watch the kids grow and hopefully compete. And keep developing kids in the minors. When players become unaffordable, rinse and repeat
