AL East Notes: Yankees, Pettitte, Rays, Blue Jays

By Zachary Links | April 8, 2012 at 7:11pm CDT

The last time the Yankees and Red Sox both started the season 0-3 was all the way back in 1966.  Boston finished 9th in the AL while New York wound up 10th.  The World Series champions that year? – the Orioles.  Here's a look at what's happening in the AL East today..

  • Yankees Manager Joe Girardi told reporters including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that Andy Pettitte will make the first start of his comeback attempt on Monday for Class-A Advanced Tampa.  The left-hander has said that he hopes to join the big league team in May.
  • Even though it's (very) early in the season, the Rays' decision to hold on to their pitching depth appears to be a wise one at the moment, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.  Tampa Bay was widely expected to add a bat by dealing Jeff Niemann or Wade Davis, but Davis has helped to provide bullpen support with Kyle Farnsworth sidelined.
  • The Blue Jays promoted Aaron Laffey from Triple-A to join the bullpen, tweets Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com.  Laffey's minor league deal with the club calls for him to earn $800K for making the big league roster.

    Aaron Laffey :/

AA’s failure to add pitching will really hurt Jays this season. I seriously thought Jays needed someone like Darvish/Garza/Latos to add some stability to the rotation.

Right but Laffey is joining the bullpen. The rotation will be Romero, Morrow, Alvarez, Drabek for the next couple weeks till they need a fifth starter

With McGowan out for long. Drabek is no sure thing. I’d say the rotation is in shambles.

It pretty much is.  Really, though, one or two free agent (FA) pieces would not have made the team complete.  Say we got two extra big FA rotation pieces.  What happens when one of four (Romero, Morrow, first FA, second FA) is injured?  We call up the same guys we have to play right now and we’re almost just as deep in the hole, except with increased committed monies.
I like that AA has chosen to wait.  While not all of our farm guys will work out, some probably will.  And as far as prospects go, we have a pretty big stash of starters that might turn out to be the next Garza or Latos.  Or better.  If we were to pick up equivalent FAs then, we’d have enough depth to carry an injury or two without the rotation falling apart.

It’s hard to be patient when we’re so close to contention.  But the evidence is there.  The team’s greatly improving.  AA wants to make a dynasty, not a brief run with a mortgaged future.

He made a bid for Latos, came up short.. would you have felt comfortable paying more than the reds did for him?

Darvish could end up being a misfire, but it was a high risk high reward scenario, rangers clearly wanted him more.

and garza hasn’t been traded yet.,

so hard to fault him for anything there.

Hard to fault him? Biggest need was pitching which he couldn’t get.

Everyone knew that going in to the off season.

While he did an excellent job with the pen and bench, I think the one thing he failed this off season was adding rotation depth.

What happens if Morrow or Romero go down? I mean they are clearly the only sure thing we have. Alvarez might be good but I’d still consider him as an unknown, I’ve lost hope with Cecil, McGowan is just an injury risk and Drabek is you know Drabek.

        Man, rotation scares me :/

From the sounds of it AA could have traded for the pitching you’re talking about, but all the trades started with Lawrie. Is that really AA coming up short? Not really. Look at the big picture instead of very limited perspectives

plenty of teams need pitching and didnt get it. and those who did overpaid for it.

so you just sitting there saying he didn’t do anything without prime examples is just rubbish..

would you have move lawrie for pineda ? like c’mon. the jays are not close enough to justify overpaying for a pitcher. He did right by standing pat

Exactly, this is still a development year in my eyes for this team. Not overpaying for a stud pitcher is fine by me when we have some studs getting close to being ready. A season or two is much better timing to start moving prospects out for established talent. Not now. Team still has too many holes.

Laffey’s K/BB ratio (1.24) is lower than his WHIP (1.539). That’s atrocious. How was he able to muster .5 WAR in 50 innings last year?

His splits vs. lefties aren’t even that much better than his splits against righties. This is not going to go well.

He will have to start because McGowan is out till May. Cecil is still figuring out his problems. They will need a 5th starter on 21st which will have to be Laffey.

no, if he’s in the pen for 3 weeks hes not going to just start all of a sudden, they will call someone up

Doesn’t have to be. Doesn’t even make sense if hes in the pen for the next couple of weeks. Could as easily be Perez or Villanueva.

There’s still time to join the Oriole Tsunami aka “The Bandwagon” :p

PS Great job by the Mets to get it done against the Bravos.
PPS Royals getting it done against the Angels 2 of 3. Take that “Big Payroll Teams”!

you guys are totally overreacting. our pitching stock is totally stacked.  im pretty sure out of the bunch we could call up, carreno was the most easy to expose to big league batting. the rest need to be ‘hidden’ right now…

…also expect hutchinson here in a few months if mcgowan isnt ready by may.
