Sugar Land Skeeters Expected To Sign Scott Kazmir

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 19, 2012 at 2:40pm CDT

The independent Sugar Land Skeeters are expected to sign left-hander Scott Kazmir, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). The Skeeters are based out of Houston, Kazmir's hometown.

A number of teams, including the Mets, showed interest in Kazmir this past winter, when he worked out in front of MLB scouts. The 28-year-old had a disappointing 2011 season that included time on the disabled list, one appearance for the Angels and a 17.02 ERA with more walks than strikeouts at Triple-A. He last pitched at an All-Star level in 2008, when he posted a 3.49 ERA with 9.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9.

Former Astros outfielder Jason Lane is also a member of the Skeeters' pitching staff.

As some one who actually has seen the Gary Gaetti led Skeeters play this year…. you never know. The Atlantic League has had plenty of career rehabs thru the years. Overall it is about AA-ball, but a good spot for former major leaguers who dont want to be locked to one team as AAA insurance.

I’m guessing the mods watched the comments on this one pretty closely. Good luck Kaz.

Yep, he had major shoulder problems that drove him out of the league as an OF, but when he began making a comeback he figured he might have a better shot as a pitcher.  He was in some team’s preseason camp this year, I want to say it was Arizona but I don’t remember.

Hard to believe that he was once a highly touted prospect and actually had a few decent seasons.

Skeeters released via twitter that Scott Kazmir has not signed with them.  They go on to say, “though that would be interesting.”
