The Royals announced that they have requested unconditional release waivers on catcher Humberto Quintero (Twitter link). Kansas City designated Quintero for assignment on June 27th.
The Royals acquired Quintero and Jason Bourgeois from Houston for Kevin Chapman and minor league outfielder D'Andre Toney back in March. The backstop posted a .232/.257/.341 line in 144 plate appearances for the Royals before being removed from the roster. Once Quintero clears release waivers, teams will be able to sign him for a pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary.
Looks like an early win for the Astros in that trade.
Maybe Bourgeois can make that trade a win…….eh, who am I kidding?
Both Quintero and Bourgeois were stop gaps until the real talent was healthy or ready. Sal Perez already has more homers than Quintero and Pena combined, and Bourgeois will soon be replaced by Wil Myers. The Royals were only needing stop gaps. They filled their purpose.
Quintero can’t hit, but damn can that dude catch and throw. I saw him in Spring Training this year and he was just blasting laser throws to 2nd from his knees.
He’d be a better hitter than any catcher on the Angel’s roster, right now.
