Yankees Claim McDonald, Designate Schwinden

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 4, 2012 at 1:24pm CDT

The Yankees acquired Darnell McDonald from the Red Sox, the outfielder announced on his personal Twitter account. The Yankees claimed McDonald off of waivers, Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger tweets. The team designated Chris Schwinden for assignment in a related move, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News tweets.

The Red Sox designated McDonald for assignment after he posted a .214/.309/.369 batting line in 99 plate appearances this year. The 33-year-old can play all three outfield positions and has a .248/.313/.396 batting line in parts of six seasons with the Orioles, Twins, Reds and Red Sox. McDonald joins a Yankees outfield that includes, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Raul Ibanez, Andruw Jones, Dewayne Wise and the injured Brett Gardner.

It's been a busy month for the 25-year-old Schwinden. The Blue Jays claimed him off of waivers from the Mets on June 2nd and the Indians claimed him off of waivers from Toronto four days later. Schwinden has a 4.31 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 14 starts for four Triple-A teams this year. He also appeared in three games for the Mets.

Just focus on the leaping catch he made over the wall the day before he was DFA’d rather than the singles he played into triples and doubles in the OF and you *might* be fine.. Also? hope pitchers don’t notice he swings at any off speed pitch in the dirt and FB in his eyes.

LOL. Hear ya. Always liked Youk and wish him luck. He will (hopefully) get it going again in Chicago and always was a terrific fielder (1b, not 3b), patient hitter who knows the K zone. DMac on the other hand is not a average fielder, not patient and knows little about the k zone.

Really have no clue why the Yanks took a flyer on him. There has to be better guys floating around who are RH.

The only thing I can think of is to pump him for info or have the Sox change their signs and try to sow confusion. Otherwise, I’m with you- WHY??

It’s just a glitch in the Yankees calendar. They’ve confused April 1st with July 4th.

Edit: At least I hope they did!

I guess they wanted an OFer who can also pitch, or at least Try to pitch, but they already have 2 of those!

Mike Axisa from this site and from River Ave Blues suspects the Yankees will send down David Phelps after this start and call up McDonald to have a 5 man bench against Boston. McDonald has a career slashsline of .277/.345/.451 against LHP and the Red Sox have 3 left handed starters for next series.

I’d like to see Phelps stay, he has nothing left to prove in the minors and has been solid in the majors.  He has thrown almost 200 innings in AAA with an era below 3.00.  25 Yr old that pitched 160 innings 2 yrs ago, let him loose once his pitch count is up to over 100.  He struck out 8 rays in 4.1 innings, and his era sits at 3.05 after 41 innings. Certainly has more potential than garcia.

Sounds plausible enough, otherwise there’s no rhyme or reason for the move.
That being the case, he would replace Wise as the 5th OFer, which I can’t see happening or he goes to AAA after the ASB.

Keeping in mind that after CC returns, the 5th spot in the rotation is between Phelps and Garcia. The number of bodies in the BP will stay the same, so McDonald is a just a temp.

In a news release today, the New York Yankees have announced that to reach their goal of having a payroll under $189 million dollars, the starting outfield for 2013 is going to be Cory Patterson, DeWayne Wise and Darnell McDonald……

Good god, did Schwinden step on Selig’s toes or what?  What did he do to deserve being passed around?

It’s not McDonald’s fault to be a Yankee. He just went where they offer him a job.

Wow, who did Chris Schwinden tick off to become Mr. DFA?  If he bounces on and off any more 40 man rosters, he’s going to have to get treated for whiplash.

If Schwinden actually CLEARS waivers this time, the Giants would do well to sign him and assign him to Fresno.  He’d be heading to familiar territory and the Giants could use some depth in SP in the high minors.

McDonald will be DFA’d again before you know it… guaranteed. I bet he won’t even get playing time in NY.

I see what the Yankees are doing.  They’re shoring up that bullpen: first Qualls, now McDonald.

Hopefully Mcdonald does well for the yanks.  Never hurts to have speed in the outfield.
