Outrighted To Triple-A: Quiroz, Loux, Christian

By Mike Axisa | October 13, 2012 at 5:55pm CDT

Here are the day's outright assignments, courtesy of the International League and Pacific Coast League transactions pages…

  • The Red Sox have outrighted Guillermo Quiroz to Triple-A and the catcher has elected free agency. Boston designated the 30-year-old for assignment earlier this month. Quiroz made outs in both of his plate appearances as the team's third backstop in September.
  • The Giants have outrighted Shane Loux to Triple-A. Loux, 33, pitched to a 4.97 ERA with as many walks as strikeouts (nine) in 25 1/3 relief innings this season.
  • The Giants have also outrighted Justin Christian to Triple-A. The 32-year-old outfielder posted a .125/.197/.143 batting line in 61 plate appearances for San Francisco this year.

1 retread gone from the PawSox and another 20 or so to go.. maybe the coming season they won’t waste roster space with so many useless pieces like 30+ YO people who can’t hit at the AAA level even.

Calm down, they traded for Quiroz strictly to be bench depth for the PawSox during their playoff run. I’m not sure why so many people have been making such a big deal out of him.

Because every winter they sign people like Repco, Duckworth, Kroeger, Mathis…. When 1 SP, 1Utility IF and 1OF max of THAT type is more than enough for the maximum amount of playing time they would conceivably get at the MLB level.

ANY MLB team has at least a couple of players.. Say utility IF, Decent OF they can callup that is at least as good as some 30+YO retread, or sign one out of the Indy league even.. it ain’t hard.. Wasting AAA space on retreads is one of those bad habits that has changed the last 15-20 years for many teams and needs to cease.

MiLB, or CAREER minor leaguers want to play forever? Form themselves a retread league, the Minor leagues are for legit prospects.

Except that’s what AAA is and has been for a while with AA being the place where you figure out how good your best prospects really are. The AAA team is essentially the B squad and a waiting room since half the major league team is going to end up disabled for a little while and sometimes you need a lot of depth.

Yeah.. That was my point when referenced 15-20 years ago AAA changed. It actually was longer than that, just didn’t edit my 1st post, but still… Minors have changed a LOT over the last 25 years..

Was looking over ESPN Boston and the articles they have up with the prospects and wondering how many will get bumped initially to AA because of retreads.. Man I’d rather Bradley, Brentz, Hazelbaker, pretty much all the OF start out at AAA and not sign a single retread OF this winter and Hissey even wasn’t mentioned. he probably never will pan out as the good prospect they thought when thrown that 1m or so a few years back, but he did pretty good last year in a P/T role and should be starting at Portland.

Sign a few less retreads, let Jacobs and Hissey start at portland.. The OF depth at the minor league levels is set pretty much already.

To me it seems more logical to have guy like Bradley, Brentz, etc in AA since they’ll be basically competing against other teams future stars. It just makes sense that you leave AAA as the waiting room/B squad and let the kids compete against their own level then against a team that might be composed of burnouts waiting for someone to get injured,
