NL East Notes: Harvey, Davis, Phillies, Werth

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 3:31pm CDT

The baseball world got some terrible news today when Mike Francesa of WFAN radio in New York reported that Mets ace Matt Harvey has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will be placed on the disabled list (hat tip: Ken Rosenthal on Twitter). A torn UCL, of course, is usually a precursor to Tommy John surgery, which would mean Harvey would miss most — if not all — of the 2014 season. It will also greatly impact the Mets' strategy for 2014, as the team had planned to make a big push for immediate contention this offseason. Here's more on the Mets and the rest of the NL East…

  • "First base is in flux," one Mets official told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. The Mets are currently unsure as to who will man the position in 2014. Martino profiles their in-house options — Ike Davis, Lucas Duda, Josh Satin and Wilmer Flores — but also notes that general manager Sandy Alderson could seek a first baseman outside the organization. Martino adds that Davis' poor play almost earned him a second demotion to Triple-A earlier in the summer.
  • Roy Halladay thinks brighter days are ahead for the Phillies, writes Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News. Said Halladay: "…we have some young players who are really kind of coming into their own and some veteran guys who are starting to produce again. I think there's just a few pieces that if we can add we're right there." Halladay, of course, is a free agent at season's end. He made his return to the Phillies' rotation over the weekend, allowing two runs on four hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts in six innings of work.
  • Many things have gone wrong for the Nationals this season, but Matt Klaassen of Fangraphs points out that Jayson Werth is having a fantastic season and earning the value of his salary this year. While the contract is still likely to be "ugly" by the end, in Klaassen's opinion, Werth is a good bet to provide above-average production for the next couple seasons if he remains healthy.

Athletics Designate Pat Neshek For Assignment

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 2:40pm CDT

The Athletics announced on Twitter that they have designated right-hander Pat Neshek for assignment. In related moves, Josh Reddick was placed on the disabled list, and right-hander Evan Scribner and first baseman Daric Barton were recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

Neshek possesses some of the better-looking stats you'll see out of a DFA'ed reliever, as he's posted a 3.58 ERA with 6.7 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 37 2/3 innings for the A's this season. Stats like FIP (4.57), xFIP (4.66) and SIERA (4.18) all feel that his ERA is a bit of a mirage, however. He's also struggled greatly as of late (six earned runs in his past three innings) and comes with significant platoon splits, as left-handed batters have produced a .327/.379/.577 batting line against the former sixth-round pick.

Neshek joins Chien-Ming Wang, Edinson Volquez and Edgmer Escalona in DFA limbo, as can be seen in MLBTR's new DFA Tracker.

Marlins Release Casey Kotchman

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 2:15pm CDT

The Marlins announced that they have activated Casey Kotchman from the disabled list and released him.

The 30-year-old Kotchman signed a minor league deal with the Marlins this offseason but appeared in only six games for the Fish before hitting the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Upon being activated from the 60-day DL in June, he suffered an oblique strain that has kept him on the shelf since.

Kotchman went hitless (0-for-20) in his six games with the Marlins but is a career .260/.326/.385 hitter in parts of 10 seasons with the Angels, Braves, Red Sox, Rays, Indians, Mariners and Marlins.

International Notes: Mets, Tanaka, Twins

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 12:01pm CDT

Many international players have generated quite a bit of buzz, which should lead to some hefty paydays when they become available to Major League clubs via free agency. Jose Dariel Abreu, Alexander Guerrero and Masahiro Tanaka are just some of the big names that could jump to the Majors next year. Here's the latest on the international market, with updates on each of those three…

  • The Mets signed Dominican outfielder Ricardo Cespedes for a $725K bonus on his 16th birthday over the weekend, Baseball America's Ben Badler reported. Badler writes that Cespedes has a good, loose swing and a nice gap-to-gap approach with the speed to start his pro career as a center fielder. As Badler notes, the Mets have spent a total of $2.465MM, so they still have some room in their $3.025MM international bonus pool.
  • In a subscription-only piece, Badler also profiles Tanaka's most recent start in Japan, during which he whiffed eight hitters over seven scoreless innings to improve to 18-0 and drop his ERA to 1.15. Badler notes that Tanaka has "arguably the best splitter in the world," and reached 97 mph with his heater on his 108th pitch of the night. Tanaka would have to be posted by the Rakuten Golden Eagles to make the jump to MLB.
  • Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN reports that Abreu's lofty price tag will likely lead the Twins to "loosely monitor" him rather than become serious players for his services. He adds that the Twins are still in on Guerrero but not as deeply as other suitors (Twitter links).

Blue Jays Designate Chien-Ming Wang For Assignment

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 9:53am CDT

The Blue Jays announced, via press release, that they have designated right-hander Chien-Ming Wang for assignment in order to clear roster space for lefty Aaron Loup, who is returning from the paternity list.

Wang, 33, was recalled over the weekend to make a start but lasted just three innings and allowed four earned runs. In 27 innings for Toronto this season, he's posted a 7.67 ERA with 4.7 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. He's been significantly better in 17 Triple-A starts between the Yankees and Jays this season, compiling a 2.72 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9.

As is the case with all players following a DFA, Wang's status can be tracked using MLBTR's new DFA Tracker. Wang joins Edinson Volquez and Edgmer Escalona in DFA limbo as he will now wait to learn what the future holds for him. The Jays will have 10 days to trade, outright or release the Taiwanese righty.

Matt Lindstrom Joins The Legacy Agency

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 9:25am CDT

White Sox right-hander Matt Lindstrom has signed with Greg Genske of The Legacy Agency, according to Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal (Twitter link). The 33-year-old Lindstrom was previously represented by the Sparta Group.

Lindstrom leads American League pitchers in appearances this season and has tallied an impressive 3.10 ERA with 6.5 K/9, 4.0 BB/9 and a 55.4 percent ground-ball rate. His contract contains a $4MM club option that seems likely to be exercised, and he could be traded at any time due to the fact that he has cleared waivers. If his option is declined, his free agency will be in the hands of an agency that has negotiated free agent deals for relievers Bobby Jenks, Danys Baez and J.P. Howell in recent years.

Tommy Hanson and Oscar Taveras have also joined The Legacy Agency in the past month, as can be seen in MLBTR's Agency Database. With info on nearly 1,900 Major League and Minor League players, our database is constantly growing. If you see any errors or omissions, please let us know via email at mlbtrdatabase@gmail.com.

Hardest-Throwing 2014 Free Agents

By Steve Adams | August 26, 2013 at 8:50am CDT

Earlier in the season, Tim Dierkes looked at the hardest throwers in this year's free agent class. A lot has changed since that list, and with just over a month of the season remaining, the current numbers should serve as a good indicator as to who the market's top flamethrowers will be. Using the 2014 Free Agent Leaderboards that I created using Fangraphs, here's an updated look at the hardest-throwing starters and relievers…

Starting Pitchers

  1. Josh Johnson and Matt Garza— 92.8 mph
  2. Jason Hammel — 92.7 mph
  3. Jon Lester — 92.6 mph ($13MM club option)
  4. Phil Hughes, Ervin Santana and A.J. Burnett — 92.4 mph
  5. Edinson Volquez and Scott Kazmir — 92.3 mph
  6. Mike Pelfrey — 92.2 mph
  7. James Shields — 92.1 mph ($12MM club option)
  8. Roberto Hernandez — 91.6 mph
  9. Ubaldo Jimenez and Roy Oswalt — 91.5 mph
  10. Hiroki Kuroda — 91.3 mph

Relief Pitchers

  1. Fernando Rodney — 96.3 mph
  2. Matt Lindstrom — 95.0 mph ($4MM club option)
  3. Joba Chamberlain — 94.8 mph
  4. Jesse Crain — 94.5 mph
  5. Matt Thornton — 94.2 mph
  6. Joaquin Benoit and Chad Qualls — 94.0 mph
  7. Boone Logan — 93.6 mph
  8. Grant Balfour, Jose Veras and Matt Albers — 93.4 mph ($3.25MM club option for Veras)
  9. Carlos Marmol and Manny Parra — 93.3 mph
  10. Mark Lowe — 92.9 mph

I didn't include Joel Hanrahan's 96.6 mph heater with the relievers, as it remains to be seen when he will be able to pitch in 2014 following Tommy John and flexor tendon surgeries. Major League starters are currently averaging 91.2 mph on their fastballs, while relievers average 92.5 mph.

For those who are interested, I also updated the list of free agents with the highest ground-ball rates last week. Pitchers who appear on both lists are Burnett, Hernandez, Volquez, Kuroda, Santana, Qualls, Lindstrom and Rodney.

Passan On Dipoto, Zduriencik, Anthopoulos

By charliewilmoth | August 25, 2013 at 10:56pm CDT

Here's the latest from Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan:

  • Angels GM Jerry Dipoto and manager Mike Scioscia are separated by a "rift" despite Scioscia's recent denial, Passan writes. Since Scioscia's contract runs through 2018, and since his influence throughout the organization is strong, Dipoto is more likely to wind up on the chopping block if the Angels do indeed decide to fire one or the other.
  • General managers suspect that Jack Zduriencik of the Mariners needed to have his superiors approve potential trades at the deadline, Passan writes. He also says that the Mariners have checked to see whether former GM and current Phillies advisor Pat Gillick might be interested in coming back to Seattle. Still, now that Zduriencik is apparently under contract through 2014, it appears he'll get more time to see if the Mariners' new core of young players (which includes Kyle Seager, Nick Franklin, Brad Miller, Mike Zunino and Taijuan Walker) can come together.
  • Despite the Blue Jays' extremely disappointing season, GM Alex Anthopoulos should get more time, Passan argues, noting that Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion's contracts have been terrific.

Quick Hits: Sabathia, Red Sox, Indians, Cardinals

By charliewilmoth | August 25, 2013 at 10:32pm CDT

C.C. Sabathia's deal with the Yankees could turn out to be an ugly one, Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com writes. "That contract might not be a disaster of A-Rod-ian proportions, but unless Sabathia finds a way to turn it all round, it might turn out to be the next-worst thing," Matthews writes. Sabathia has three years left on his contract, plus a vesting option for 2017 that the Yankees can avoid only if Sabathia has a left shoulder injury. All told, the Yankees are likely to be on the hook for $96MM after this season. Sabathia's season arguably isn't as bad as his 4.81 ERA makes it look — his peripherals are indicative of ERA about a run lower. But his declining velocity is a serious concern. Here are more notes from around the big leagues.

  • The Red Sox's huge trade of Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to the Dodgers one year ago gave them the payroll flexibility to acquire Ryan Dempster, Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew, Koji Uehara, and Jonny Gomes, Scott Miller of CBS Sports writes. But that doesn't mean the Dodgers are unhappy with their end of the deal — Miller notes that it "changed the path of both franchises." Miller also quotes Dodgers manager Don Mattingly noting that his team likely would have pursued Victorino (for whom they had traded in July 2012) as a free agent if they hadn't acquired Crawford.
  • The trade also gave the Sox the flexibility to acquire Jake Peavy, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal notes. Peavy's matchup against Chris Capuano on Sunday reminds MacPherson that the Red Sox made a "desperate attempt" to acquire Capuano from the Mets in 2011. The talent gap between Peavy and Capuano is significant, and MacPherson argues that the trade with the Dodgers made the difference in acquiring Peavy this time.
  • There will be interest in Asdrubal Cabrera and Chris Perez this offseason if the Indians want to trade them, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes. Cabrera has struggled this season, hitting .237/.292/.389, and he's set to make $10MM in the last year of his contract in 2014. Perez, meanwhile, is set to earn a raise in arbitration on his $7.3MM 2013 salary before becoming a free agent after 2014. His pitching hasn't been stellar in 2013 — he has a 3.30 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. Hoynes may be right that the Indians could deal Perez if they wanted to. For example, the Red Sox's offseason trade for Joel Hanrahan, a pitcher with a similar salary and contract situation, perhaps shows that teams are always willing to deal for an established closer. But that deal also demonstrates just how volatile closers can be, and Perez has never been dominant in the way Hanrahan once was.
  • As the August trade deadline approaches, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak says that his team is unlikely to make a trade, Joe Strauss of the Post-Dispatch tweets. That makes it unlikely that the Cards will wind up with Dan Haren of the Nationals. The Cardinals recently lost Jake Westbrook to injury and have replaced him in the rotation with Tyler Lyons, at least for now.

Minor Moves: Buckner, Bourgeois

By charliewilmoth | August 25, 2013 at 9:35pm CDT

Here are today's minor moves from around baseball.

  • The Angels have outrighted pitcher Billy Buckner to Triple-A, according to MLB.com's transactions page. The Angels designated Buckner for assignment last Friday when they promoted Cory Rasmus. Buckner has a 4.60 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 in Triple-A so far this season.
  • Outfielder Jason Bourgeois has accepted the Rays' outright assignment, and he'll head to Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. The Rays designated Bourgeois for assignment on Friday. Bourgeois has spent most of the season with Durham, hitting .291/.336/.371 in 363 plate appearances.
  • More information about players recently designated for assignment can be found at MLBTR's new DFA Tracker.
