Minor Moves: Pena, Palmer, Whelan, Adamson, Buckner, Cunningham

By edcreech | August 17, 2014 at 7:20pm CDT

Here are Sunday’s minor moves from around MLB, updates first:

  • The Rangers have released veteran first baseman Carlos Pena from their Triple-A roster, per the PCL transactions page. Pena struggled at the major league level for Texas with a .136/.190/.237 line in 63 plate appearances. He performed better during his month at Triple-A with a .297/.350/.500 line in 80 plate appearances. No word on why the club cut ties with Pena.
  • The Mariners have released right-handed pitcher Matt Palmer from the Triple-A Rainiers, according to the PCL transactions page. The 35-year-old pitched to a 5.42 ERA for the Rainiers over 73 innings. He last appeared in the majors with the Padres in 2012. Angels fans may remember him from his 2009 season, when he won 11 games and posted a 3.93 ERA over 121 innings.
  • Resolving an earlier bit of news, the Tigers have outrighted the contract of right-handed pitcher Kevin Whelan to Triple-A. The 30-year-old appeared once for the big league club and allowed two runs over one and one-third innings. Prior to his call up, he served as the closer for the Mud Hens, where he posted a 2.45 ERA, 10.93 K/9, and 4.02 BB/9. Presumably, he will return to that role. The team announced the move on Twitter.
  • Padres minor league outfielder Corey Adamson has retired to pursue a career in Australian rules football, reports Jeff Sanders of U-T San Diego. The 22-year-old, six-year pro was hitting .257/.340/.399 in 348 plate appearances at the High-A level.
  • The Brewers have signed right-hander Billy Buckner to a minor league contract, tweets Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com. The 30-year-old was released two weeks ago by the Padres. Buckner made one spot start for San Diego this season allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings and, in 15 appearances (14 starts) for Triple-A El Paso, has posted a 5.80 ERA, 6.2 K/9, and 4.7 BB/9 in 63 2/3 innings.
  • Cotillo also tweets the Diamondbacks have released outfielder Aaron Cunningham from their Triple-A affiliate. The 27-year-old, who signed a minor league deal with Arizona in March, slashed .255/.342/.346 in 281 plate appearances for Reno. Cunningham hasn’t appeared in a MLB game since 2012 when he hit .175/.245/.247 for the Indians in 109 plate appearances.
  • Per MLBTR’s DFA Tracker, there are four players in DFA limbo: Corey Brown (Red Sox), Charlie Leesman (White Sox), Matt Hague (Pirates), and Wirfin Obispo (Pirates).

Minor Moves: Gwynn, Abreu, Noonan, Joseph, Tekotte

By edcreech | August 3, 2014 at 6:24pm CDT

Here are Sunday’s minor moves from around MLB:

  • The Rays have released Erik Bedard and Juan Carlos Oviedo, according to MiLB.com. The Rays had designated both pitchers for assignment earlier in the week.
  • The Phillies have announced that they’ve re-signed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to a minor league deal. He will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Gwynn hit .163/.281/.204 in 119 plate appearances for the Phillies this season. They released him last week.
  • Instead of electing free agency, infielder Tony Abreu has accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A by Giants, tweets Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com. Abreu was designated for assignment Tuesday after appearing in only four games. The 29-year-old owns a .280/.329/.428 slash line in 259 plate appearances this season for Triple-A Fresno.
  • The Giants announced infielder Nick Noonan has cleared waivers and will be outrighted to Triple-A Fresno. The 25-year-old was designated for assignment July 25. Noonan, the 32nd overall selection in the 2007 draft, made his MLB debut last season slashing .219/.261/.238 in 111 plate appearances, but has struggled this year with a .239/.281/.302 line in 340 plate appearances between Triple-A Fresno and Class-A Advanced San Jose.
  • The Marlins tweeted left-hander Donnie Joseph has been outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans. The 26-year-old was designated for assignment Thursday after the Marlins acquired Jarred Cosart from the Astros. Joseph was picked up from the Royals for cash considerations June 30 and has spent his entire time in the Marlin organization at Triple-A posting an 11.05 ERA, 6.1 K/9, and 9.8 BB/9 in six relief outings covering 7 1/3 innings.
  • The Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Blake Tekotte from the White Sox for cash, per the MLB.com transactions page. Tekotte, who made 36 plate appearances for the White Sox in 2013 good for a slash of .226/.306/.355, will report to Triple-A Reno. The 27-year-old posted a .251/.324/.438 line in 318 plate appearances for the White Sox’s Triple-A affiliate.
  • The Padres have released right-hander Billy Buckner from their Triple-A affiliate, according to the Pacific Coast League’s transactions page. The 30-year-old made one spot start for the Padres on May 24 allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. In 15 appearances (14 starts) for Triple-A El Paso, Buckner has posted a 5.80 ERA, 6.2 K/9, and 4.7 BB/9 in 63 2/3 innings.
  • Also from the PCL transactions page, the Angels have released catcher Luis Martinez from their Triple-A affiliate. The 29-year-old, whose last MLB action was with the Rangers in 2012, hit .262/.329/.403 in 212 plate appearances for Salt Lake this season.
  • Martinez didn’t stay unemployed very long as he was signed by the A’s and assigned to Triple-A Sacramento. The roster causality is catcher Luis Exposito, despite producing at a .303/.410/.394 clip since Oakland signed him June 26 after being released by the Tigers.
  • Ten players find themselves in DFA limbo, as tracked by MLBTR’s DFA Tracker: Dan Uggla and Tyler Colvin (Giants), Jeff Francis and Brian Roberts (Yankees), Josh Wall and Dean Anna (Pirates), Ryan Feierabend (Rangers), David Carpenter (Angels), Nick Christiani (Reds), and Pedro Hernandez (Rockies).

Minor Moves: Ramirez, Brach, Newby, Buckner, Boyer, Lo

By Jeff Todd | May 27, 2014 at 9:25pm CDT

We’ll keep tabs on the day’s minor moves right here …

  • The Royals have signed catcher Max Ramirez to a minor league deal, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter). Ramirez, 29, was once a top-100 prospect with the Rangers, but has only seen 140 career MLB plate appearances (all with Texas). He was the primary backstop for the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate from 2012-13, but posted an interesting .192/.382/.192 line in 68 plate appearance with the Reds’ top farm club this year before hitting the open market.
  • Two Somerset Patriots right-handers have been signed away to affiliated ball on minor league pacts, tweets Mike Ashmore of MyCentralJersey.com. Brett Brach has signed with the Nationals, while Kyler Newby will join the Angels. Brach, 26, had spent his career in the Indians organization, briefly reaching the Triple-A level. The 29-year-old Newby, who has spent ten seasons in the minors and owns a lifetime 9.9 K/9 against 3.3 BB/9, threw to a 2.70 ERA in 60 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A in the Athletics organization last year.
  • Billy Buckner and Blaine Boyer have each accepted assignments with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports on Twitter. The pair of righties was designated for assignment (and, it turns out, exposed to outright waivers) on Sunday, in conjunction with a series of roster moves relating to the team’s acquisition of lefty Troy Patton.
  • The Astros have released righty Chia-Jen Lo, according to the PCL transactions page. The 28-year-old Taiwanese native tossed 19 1/3 big league innings and even notched two saves last year for Houston. He worked to a 4.19 ERA with 7.4 K/9 against 6.1 BB/9. Lo, who was outrighted off of the club’s 40-man early this season, had struggled to a 4.74 ERA in 19 Triple-A innings in 2014, getting hit hard while striking out 8.1 and walking 5.7 batters per nine.
  • MLBTR’s DFA Tracker shows several players in DFA limbo, with Blake Wood of the Indians joining Phil Irwin, Wandy Rodriguez, and Vin Mazzaro of the Pirates.

Padres Designate Buckner, Boyer For Assignment

By edcreech | May 25, 2014 at 4:01pm CDT

The Padres announced on Twitter they have designated right-handers Billy Buckner and Blaine Boyer for assignment. The Padres needed to clear roster space for left-lander Troy Patton, who was acquired from the Orioles yesterday for catcher Nick Hundley. San Diego also recalled first baseman/outfielder Tommy Medica.

Buckner’s stint as a Padre was extremely short – less than one day. He was added to the roster yesterday to start against the Cubs and tossed 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Boyer also wasn’t long for San Diego as he had his contract selected just this past Thursday and made his first MLB appearance in three years that same night tossing two scoreless innings of relief against the Cubs.

Manager Bud Black said the club would like to keep both players and have them pitch for Triple-A El Paso, reports MLB.com’s Corey Brock. The Padres now have ten days to either trade, release, or outright the pair.

Angels Designate Billy Buckner For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 25, 2013 at 6:05pm CDT

The Angels will designate Billy Buckner for assignment in order to clear a roster spot for right-hander J.C. Gutierrez, who the club claimed off waivers from the Royals yesterday, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez (on Twitter).

Buckner, 29, appeared in seven games for the Halos this season (two starts), posting a 4.67 ERA in 17 2/3 innings. However, he managed just seven strikeouts against seven walks and also allowed a staggering five home runs in that short time. He was already outrighted off the Angels' 40-man roster once this season back in May.

Outrighted To Triple-A: Buckner, Rondon

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2013 at 12:48pm CDT

Today's minor moves…

  • The Angels outrighted righty Billy Buckner to Triple-A, tweets J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles News Group.  Buckner had been designated for assignment Sunday to make room for Kevin Jepsen.  Buckner, 29, has a 4.56 ERA, 7.6 K/9, 4.8 BB/9, and 0.57 HR/9 in 47 1/3 Triple-A innings this year, and he also fired five scoreless innings to beat the Royals on Saturday.  Buckner was drafted by the Royals in the second round in '04, a round which also produced notable big leaguers Dustin Pedroia, Hunter Pence, Yovani Gallardo, Kurt Suzuki, Jason Vargas, and Seth Smith.  The Royals ultimately traded Buckner to the Diamondbacks in '07 for Alberto Callaspo, who was eventually dealt to the Angels for pitchers Sean O'Sullivan and Will Smith.  Smith remains in the Royals' organization, serving as rotation depth at Triple-A.
  • The Yankees outrighted southpaw Francisco Rondon to Triple-A yesterday, according to the International League transactions page.  Rondon had been designated for assignment Saturday, upon the Yankees' waiver claim of David Huff.  The 25-year-old Rondon has a 7.46 ERA, 6.9 K/9, 6.4 BB/9, and 1.29 HR/9 in 35 Double-A innings this year.  He became a six-year minor league free agent at the end of last season, but the Yankees re-signed him in October and added him to the 40-man roster in November to prevent him from being taken in the Rule 5 draft, as Mike Axisa of River Ave. Blues explained.
  • Six players currently reside in DFA limbo: Edinson Rincon of the Padres, Ramon Ortiz of the Blue Jays, Michael Bowden of the Cubs, Robert Andino and Francisco Martinez of the Mariners, and Ben Francisco of the Yankees.

Buckner, 29, started on Saturday against the Royals and gave the club five scoreless innings on their way to a 7-0 victory.  In parts of five big league seasons, Buckner owns a 6.03 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.  THe right-hander made eight starts in Triple-A Salt Lake prior to his brief 2013 major league stint and posted a 4.56 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9.
