Athletics Acquire Corey Brown

By Steve Adams | December 19, 2013 at 11:32am CDT

11:32am: The Nationals announced that they've received cash considerations in return for Brown.

11:15am: The Athletics have acquired outfielder Corey Brown from the Nationals, according to ESPN's Buster Olney (Twitter link). Brown was designated for assignment last week to make room for Nate McLouth on the Nationals' 40-man roster.

Brown, 28, is a career .175/.250/.400 batter in 45 Major League plate appearances. At the Triple-A level, he's slashed .254/333/.461 in 1602 career plate appearances. Brown and right-hander Henry Rodriguez were acquired by the Nationals in the 2010 trade that sent Josh Willingham to Oakland. The A's took him in the supplemental round of the 2007 draft as compensation for the los of Frank Thomas.

Brown is out of options, meaning he will have to make the Athletics' Major League club out of Spring Training or be designated for assignment or traded again.

Shocking! The Nationals and A’s just made a trade. What’s next? Will the Yankees sign an outfielder?

My favorite part about this trade is that he is the third player (by my count) to have been traded from the A’s to the Nationals back to the A’s or vice versa (Kurt Suzuki and AJ Cole being the others).

I hope so but those numbers look pretty bad I doubt he makes our roster. One of those outfielders got to be a DH though. We need Reddicks arm in right, Cocos speed in center, and im guessing Cespedes and Gentry take turns at DH?? it would be smarted to have Cespedes as all time DH but that is ALOT of money for a DH and Gentry is obviously the more athletic of the 2.

Pretty much the DH spot is going to be rotating all the outfielders given that Cespedes, Crisp, and Reddick were all injury prone in 2013. Cespedes is actually a very good outfielder, but because of his injury history probably won’t play in the outfield all the time.

Also, no way Corey Brown makes the roster unless he suddenly hits .500 in spring training. Too many quality outfielders on the roster already. Brown is basically just minor league depth.

Gentry hits lefties better than Coco does, so there will be kind of a platoon in center and anything to keep Coco fresh is a good thing. Coco needs a lot of rest to keep him off the DL.
Why would you have a five tool player like Cespedes the full time DH?

He had a good year in 2012 and was alright last year, hope the As give him the chance to stick in the bigs the Nats never did.

The A’s have Taylor, Crumbliss and now Corey Brown for the same corner outfield position. All of these players are 26+ so not much more time for development. Corey Brown is a fly ball hitter so I’m guessing that is why the A’s reacquired him.
