Mariners Designate Chance Ruffin For Assignment

By Zachary Links | December 18, 2013 at 8:02pm CDT

The Mariners announced that right-hander Chance Ruffin has been designated for assignment. The move will make room on the M's 40-man roster for Franklin Gutierrez.

Ruffin, 25, made nine big league relief appearances last season but spent the bulk of the year in Doulbe-A and Triple-A where he posted a combined 3.91 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9.  Ruffin was taken with the 48th overall pick in the 2010 draft by the Tigers.  Detroit sent Ruffin as the player to be named later in the Doug Fister deal in 2011.

To keep track of Ruffin and everyone else in DFA limbo, check out MLBTR's DFA Tracker.

So, what’s the better headline: M’s won’t take Chance on Chance? Rough turn of events for Ruffin? Chance for Chance to be Diamond in the Ruffin?

Chance is Ruffin’ it in DFA limbo… (liked him when he was with Detroit, worth a pick up here IMO)

Ahhhh the “centerpiece” of the 2011 Doug Fister trade. Good luck to ya Ruffin. I hope you get another Chance soon.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Astros give him a Chance

    Ruffin’s a BUST.
    Casper Wells a BUST
Some other guy I forget his name a BUST
Charlie Furbush, serviceable lefty out of the ‘pen.

    Another fabulous trade GMZ!

Casper was a known quantity, 4th OF/AAAA player. He was a toss in.
Ruffin, is disappointing. Had higher hopes for him. I liked him when he was in the Detroit farm
Furbush is a bust from a SP standpoint, looks to be a very good BP arm.
And the other guy was Francisco Martinez. And he’s currently in the minors in Detroit again.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him back in the Detroit system. Always seemed to have good upside to him…

There must be some teams that may have stockpile of catchers enough for one to be traded to a team like the Seattle Mariners to back up Mike Zunino in exchange for pitchers Chance Ruffin outfielder Leon Landry. Toronto would make sense of needing some pitching help at AAA in Buffalo by sending catcher Eric Kratz to the Mariners (position battle w/ Jesus Sacre). Kratz’s stats from the Phillis from last year isn’t too shabby but can improve at a friendly confine of Safeco Field. Jack Z & Jays GM AA ought to get on the phone to pull off the minor move.
