Ryan Theriot Retires

By charliewilmoth | January 6, 2014 at 1:10am CDT

Ryan Theriot has retired, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports (on Twitter). The 34-year-old last played in the big leagues in 2012. He finishes his career with a .281/.341/.350 line in parts of eight seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals and Giants. He played most of that time in the Cubs' middle infield, but he also was on World-Series-winning teams in St. Louis in 2011 and San Francisco in 2012.

Theriot sat out the 2013 season after not finding an offer that would provide him with enough playing time. Last March, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted that Theriot was interested in becoming an agent.

Exactly. And Eli Manning is better than Peyton Manning. Varitek was better than Fisk, and Pedroia is already better than Cal Ripken.

Last play of his career was scoring the winning run in the WS. Not bad! Thanks Ryan!

He also scored the game winning run in the 2000 College World Series in the bottom of the 9th in similar fashion. The dude has got some rings…

    – drafted and developed by the Cubs, started 3yrs for the Cubs.
    – Leaves Cubs, wins 2 WS with 2 different teams 2 years in a row.

It’s hard being a Cubs fan.

How can you possibly compare Cubs fans and Blue Jays fans?

Cubs wear an awkward mix of pride and shame.

I really hope they nix those blue uniforms. They should wear pinstripes exclusive at home. They grey only on the road.

He didn’t use the words fan or fans. Maybe he just meant it’s hard being a bird.

It happens all the time. Look at Greg maddux he was drafted by Chicago won a cy young. They gave him a big slap to the face, so he promptly goes to Atlanta to win 3 cy young awards more in a row and a ws along with the greatest divisional winning team of all time. He went back for two years only to get traded for Cesar izturis. One of the worst players in all of baseball

He was one of my favorite players while he was a Chicago Cub, but then he went and blasted them when he left for STL by saying “”Now I’m on the right side of the rivalry.” Good luck in your post-baseball career, Riot!

Yea, he was one of the Cubs players I really liked, until he went and did that. Good for him for getting 2 rings though!

Although I despise the giants I was happy him and Fontenot both got out of that horrible organization and won the ws. They didn’t play at all with the 3 total they won but they still got those rings.

Don’t think he would have had a hard time getting a bench spot.

Your right he waited a year and a half to retire because he is cool and always does things fashionably late.

Giants wanted him back as utility…he wanted to be a starter. Can’t blame a guy for walking away … It’s actually refresing

Ryan Theriot is the only person to be teammates with two people who hit three homers in a World Series game at the time they hit them!

Ryan Theriot is 7 feet tall! Oh I heard he steals bases by the hundreds! And if he were here he would consume his rivals with great fire balls from his eyes.

Almost amazing he couldn’t find a starting job last year given how cost effective he would be in the ridiculous middle infield market.
