Here’s a collection of reactions to and fallout from the trade of closer Huston Street from the Padres to the Angels.
- The fact that the Angels could control Huston Street for 2015 was a key factor in trading for him, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times writes. “Were it not for the fact we had the ability to control Huston for a year and two months, it would have been far more difficult to justify giving up the type of package we gave up to get him,” says GM Jerry Dipoto.
- Angels reliever Joe Smith doesn’t mind ceding the closer’s job to Street, DiGiovanna writes. “If they think it’s better for the ballclub, I’m all for it. I signed my life away, so to speak, last off-season. I came here to win,” he says. “If they think he can help this club, bring it on.”
- From the Padres’ perspective, the deal increases the likelihood that Chase Headley will be traded this month, R.J. Anderson of Baseball Prospectus writes (subscription only). The inclusion of second baseman Taylor Lindsey in the deal likely bumps Jedd Gyorko to third base. Gyorko had a disastrous start to his season is no sure thing himself, of course, but the Street trade makes the Padres’ future infield at least a little clearer.
- The Padres did quite well in the deal, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman writes. Heyman cites another team’s GM who sounds excited about R.J. Alvarez (“could be a future closer“) and Jose Rondon, in particular, even though he doesn’t like Lindsey as much.

As I thought Chase Headley is available; Padres are in complete rebuild mode now.
I Believe We Can Win
They’ve been in complete rebuild mode officially since Byrnes was fired. And Headleys been available for a while now.

Chase should have been sold off 2 years ago when it was clear that he would not accept a below market deal to stay in SD. That said, the Street deal was genius. Still can’t believe my team gave up so much for a year and a half of Street.
Jose Ochoa
I’m sure he’ll resign
DarthMurph
He’ll probably be traded so that seems unlikely.

You don’t trade a guy that belts 31 home runs and drives in 115. You try to extend him. Last time they traded a guy that had that kind of production (Adrian Gonzalez) because he wouldn’t sign a home town discount fans were outraged and unhappy. The deal even made some fans mad cause they felt hoyer gave his buddies the Red Sox a cheap deal on Gonzalez. That being said Byrnes tried to extend him and it didn’t work. Had he replicated 2012 in 2013 he would of gained a bigger haul that trade deadline. Unfortunately Headleys dealt with injuries the past 2 years. But while they may not get as much as they would of had they dealt him immediately Byrnes didn’t want to replicate the Gonzalez move. Low ball offer and regret it later. Prospects are prospects. There’s just as much chance they get a starter and good players if they trade him now compared to what they would of got. I mean peavy was dealt for Russel Porada, Richards, and another guy. Only guy that was worth anything was Richards and he’s not on an major team last I checked. More to the point they may not have dealt him but the bigger success is not paying him 5 yrs 55/60 mill.

The Gonzo trade was far from a gimme. Whether it Cash or Rizzo, that, Kelly and Fuentes was enough and the ownership at the time largest interest was salary relief. The only similarity with the Gonzo trade and Peavy trade was the ownership’s desire for salary relief. Tower could get nothing as White sox knew they had to trade him and Peavy had to waive no trade.
Bottom line it was Byrnes mistake not to sell high on Headley. Fan now just want him gone and only cheer to hope the return the Pads can get becomes more. Where I do think you have legs is Rizzo was shipped out too early. Had Byrnes waited another season, he would have seen the slump of Alonzo and never would have picked him over Rizzo for 1B. If Cash doesn’t resign here that trade will end up being Byrnes biggest blunder.

It really wasn’t that much. Hate to say it but there’s nothing real special about any of the prospects the Angels gave up. That’s not to say they won’t have any success. But to think that Lindsey would be the 2B of the future and RJ Alvarez would be the closer of the future with the Angels is kind of lowering standards for a rich organization like the Angels. Howie Kendrick probably gets extended again after next season, and Huston Street is the closer of the future. An organization like the Padres is where prospects like Lindsey and Alvarez are the future.

Don’t get my wrong. The impacts to the Angels ML club is minimal. Alvarez has some upside as a solid bullpen arm. Rondon and Lindsey are more utility type infielders that probably wouldn’t start on a team like the Angels.
What I’m disappointed in is their value as trade chips. We now have the benefit of hindsight and nearly everyone is saying the same thing – too much was given up. That tells me that teams viewed the minor league talent as somewhat valuable. Not having them limits future trading opportunities.

I am so tired of this organization being the AAA team for MLB. We might have one really great player each season, only for them to be traded later that year.
This is a good trade for the organization, but as a season ticket holder I am just so done with this team. It doesn’t put fans in the seats. Alot of people enjoy going to a game, knowing that they paid their hard earned money to see a particular all-star play that day. The Padres play smart ball, it’s just not very fun to watch anymore.

If they were in complete rebuild mode Smith, Ross, Cashner, Kennedy would all be in play. It has been said ownership doesn’t want to move Smith at least this year. They have also said Kennedy is under control next year and it would take an aggressive offer to move him. Cashner has been reported to not be willing to talk an extension as it stands right now. Ross value has never been higher and really was one of Byrnes best moves giving up little to get from Oakland. All these reports if true; would support not being in full blown rebuild mode.
I for one wouldn’t be opposed to taking an “Astros” approach. Is there really any untouchable talent here currently? I am a fan and a customer for this team and would like to get to a competitive product sooner than later. The whole culture of this team needs to change for long term success. This franchise is clear of the Moores (KT) Moorad (KT/ Hoyer/ Byrnes) Moorse (Byrnes) fiasco. Seidler/Fowler need their own guy/gal. It might be the quickest way. Anything is better than saying what is currently on the field is a viable MLB team.
