Free Agent Starter Notes: Price, Zimmermann, Buehrle

By Mark Polishuk | November 21, 2015 at 8:42pm CDT

Here are some items about some notable pitchers on the open market…

  • David Price and Jordan Zimmermann have both been cited as Cubs targets this winter, and ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers looks at the pros and cons for signing each starter for the Northsiders.
  • A reunion between Mark Buehrle and the White Sox is probably unlikely, MLB.com’s Scott Merkin writes as part of a reader mailbag, since adding Buehrle would give the Sox five left-handers in the rotation.  It isn’t yet clear if Buehrle plans to pitch in 2016 but at least 10 teams have shown interest if he did come back for another season.
  • Colby Lewis underwent meniscus surgery after the season and will have a checkup on his progress around Thanksgiving, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports.  The Rangers are interested in re-signing Lewis but they’ll wait to see the results of the checkup before they revisit negotiations.
  • The Rangers have been aggressive in checking out the trade and free agent markets for a pitching upgrade, but Sullivan notes that the most expensive pitchers (i.e. Price, Zack Greinke) aren’t being targeted.  Beyond finding a new starter, the biggest help to the Texas rotation will be if Yu Darvish, Martin Perez, Derek Holland are all healthy next season.

I really don’t see Fernandez getting traded. I think the marlins would be asking for too much with any team.

I don’t see why the Rangers don’t take a chance in Willin Rosario, he would be relatively cheap and could be an offensive boost at either catcher or first or DH spelling Moreland, fielder and chirinos, plus trying to make a run at Oday or Soria doesn’t seem to crazy either

Rosario makes a lot of sense but he isnt a long term option. I still think they will trade for lucroy

I would love Lucroy, but worry he’d cost a lot. But we know the Rangers are not done trading yet so we shall see what happens.

Nah they probably would chock with 1 strike away from winning or make a lot of errors in an inning, they have creative ways of chocking lol

We? I didn’t realize players comment on this site. You don’t have to tell us who you are, but can you at least give your position and any inside information you have?

The only way Buehrle goes to the white Sox is a a day deal and retires.

Any reunion of Mark Buehrle and the White Sox would seem to be predicated on another southpaw departing first, preferably John Danks but more likely Jose Quintana in a trade to fetch some needed offense in the form of a third baseman or corner outfielder.

In that event, the signing of Buehrle to a one year final contract would make some sense for the White Sox. He could finish his career with the team it all began with while also serving to mentor Carlos Rodon, much as he did a young Chris Sale prior to departing as a FA following the 2011 season.

Regardless of any other moves this off-season, rhp Erik Johnson figures to be in the White Sox rotation come opening day. Two of the White Sox top four prospects, Frankie Montas and Carson Fulmer, are also right-handed starting pitchers. Each figure to be rotation members come 2017, after Buehrle’s retirement, and likely will be in the White Sox bullpen at some point during the upcoming season which is the club’s m.o. with most of their young starters (Sale, Quintana, Hector Santiago, Rodon, etc,).

I’ll take Zimmerman over price. It won’t be 7 years and won’t be 200mil. He’ll ask for 120 and 5. Might be too much but he’s 29 not 31. Or I’d try to sway Cueto to the cubs on a short term deal. 3 years and 75 mil. Royals won’t give him that. Price Zimmerman and Cueto will all have new homes by the time the new season starts.
