The deadline for teams to add players to their 40-man roster and thereby protect them from this year’s Rule 5 Draft is tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET. As such, there will be a large volume of players added to 40-man rosters in the coming day as well as a handful of moves to clear 40-man space for those new additions. The Astros’ trade of Jonathan Villar and release of Robbie Grossman and Luis Cruz earlier today, for instance, created three new spots on their 40-man for the purpose of protecting prospects. Players who signed at 18 or younger must be added to the 40-man roster within five years of signing or be exposed to all 29 other teams in the Rule 5 Draft. Players who were 19 or older at the time they signed must be added within four seasons.
MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo has more specifics on the intricacies of the Rule 5 Draft for those that are interested. Mayo also notes that 11 of MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects are in need of protection from the Rule 5 Draft, and he goes on to list the players from each organization’s Top 30 prospects who must be added by tomorrow night in order to be protected.
With all of that said, here’s today’s list of players that have been added to the 40-man roster…
- The Reds have added right-handers Robert Stephenson and Sal Romano as well as left-hander Stephen Johnson to the 40-man roster, per a tweet from MLBPipeline.com.
- Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets that the Padres have added recently acquired outfielder Manuel Margot to the 40-man roster in addition to shortstop prospect Jose Rondon. Margot was one of the centerpieces in the trade that sent Craig Kimbrel to Boston.
Earlier Updates
- Outfielder Mallex Smith and right-hander John Gant have been added to the Braves’ 40-man roster, the team announced today. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets that there won’t be any further additions before tomorrow’s deadline.
- The Blue Jays have added right-handers Blake McFarland and Brady Dragmire to their 40-man roster, writes Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. That still leaves five empty spots on the club’s 40-man roster, though there’s no guarantee that the Blue Jays will fill those voids prior to tomorrow’s deadline.
- The Cardinals announced today that they’ve purchased the contracts of shortstop Aledmys Diaz, left-hander Dean Kiekhefer and outfielder Charlie Tilson, thus protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft (Twitter link).
- The Nationals have selected the contracts of infielder Chris Bostick, catcher Spencer Kieboom and left-hander Nick Lee, per a team announcement (on Twitter).

Do you see any one as good as Deshields or Herrera being left unprotected this year? After 40 mans are done would like to see your thoughts on potential rule 5 guys that could be impacts right away.

By the looks of it, it looks like Patrick Wisdom, Luis Perdomo, Dwight Smith Jr., David Peterson, Yeison Asencio, Matt Skole and John Camargo will go unprotected unless their respective teams reevaluate and go back and give them a spot.

Wisdom will be left unprotected but I would be surprised if someone takes him in the Rule 5.

His bat might not be ready yet, but his power/speed mix might be good for a bench bat. Then they can send him back down next year.

After looking at Mayo’s article there are a pretty nice amount of good players even outside the top 100 prospects that aren’t on their teams 40.
Obviously that can change within the next 24 hours, but it’s still nice to think about as a fan.

There’s a player in the minors named Kieboom? Please tell me he hits for a lot of power …

A+ name.
Ted
Sadly he hit 2 HR in 285 PA last year as a 24 year old in high-A ball. He slugged .002 above his OBP. So no, not so much with the power. He better have one heck of a glove to play catcher with that kind of production.

There’s Anthony Bemboom as well in the Angels system.
Lots of fun names when you look at each teams minors system. I remember there was a player named Sequoyah Trueblood Stonecipher several years ago.

I swear if Preller doesn’t protect Justin Hancock and he gets taken I’ll be mad…

So many people forgot about Mallex Smith going to Braves in that trade. In my opinion, he is a better CF prospect than Margot. He has no power, but Margot doesn’t have much. Smith has hit for average everywhere he goes and he has much, much better speed. 80 speed.

looks like Mallex will be playing for the Braves at some point in 2016. Does Smith hit from the left side at all? – stole a lot of bases last year. But as far as who is better between the 2 lets wait another 3,5,10 years to decide

Just for the sake of getting a better understanding, Margot could not have been selected in the Rule 5 draft until next winter, correct? Cot’s has his signing day as 7/2/11 when he was 16. So that would make him ineligible for selection until after July of 2016 (5 years) which would leave him safe until next year’s Rule 5 draft?
If so, why add him to the 40-man now?

It includes ’11 (11,12,13,14,15)

Random question about comp picks. The Orioles have Chen and Davis as free agents who rejected the QO. Odds are those 2 will sign elsewhere. MLBTR has Chen going to the Tigers and Davis tot he Cardinals. Now I know the Tigers have a protected 1st round pick so they’ll sacrifice their 2nd round pick, and the Cards would sacrifice their 1st round pick for Davis.
So here’s the question, do the Orioles then get 2 compensation picks after the first round? Or do they get 1 comp pick after the 1st round and then another comp pick after the 2nd round?
I guess the real meat of the question is, if a team has multiple qualifying offer FAs who rejected their offers would they get multiple comp picks after the first round?
Or do they get 1 comp pick after the 1st round, one pick after the 2nd round, and so on depending how many QO FAs leave their team.
OR (let’s use the O’s as example again) if Chen and Davis sign elsewhere do they get a comp pick after the 1st round this year and then another comp pick after the 1st round next year? I doubt that would be the case.
I just don’t recall a team having multiple compensation picks in between the 1st and 2nd rounds before but the Orioles, Cards, Nationals, Dodgers, and Padres all have multiple QO FAs on the market with comp picks attached to them.

Mlb had a nice article on this. The Orioles will have 2 first-round comp draft picks if both Davis and Chen sign elsewhere. The full order of picks can be found here: m.mlb.com/news/article/157232438/qualifying-offers…

Thanks. That’s what I was figuring. Just wasn’t sure since I don’t think it has ever happened before… until now. Granted this new format has been only in effect for, what, 2-3 years going into this offseason.
