3:47pm: Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune tweets that the Mariners will receive cash instead of a PTBNL in the deal.
3:06pm: The Padres have struck a deal to acquire outfielder Jabari Blash from the Mariners, per an announcement from Seattle. A player to be named later or cash will return to the M’s in the deal.
Blash, of course, has spent much of the year playing at the major league level for the Friars after being selected in the winter’s Rule 5 draft. San Diego designated him for assignment recently, and Blash evidently cleared waivers and was offered back to his original organization — the Mariners, who had declined to protect him in the offseason by adding him to their 40-man.
Clearly, the Padres are more enamored of Blash’s future prospects than is his former team. The 26-year-old will head to Triple-A to attempt to refine his hitting, which wasn’t possible when San Diego controlled his Rule 5 rights.
Blash struggled to a .120/.241/.160 batting line with 13 strikeouts in his first 29 trips to the plate in the majors. But he showed some promise last year in the upper minors compiling a .271/.370/.576 slash in 476 plate appearances in the upper minors.

Yes this is great because give him this year in triple A and next year he will be a stud I just can’t believe he actually got through waivers I’m shocked
bbatardo
He got through waivers since no other team wanted them on their 25 man roster. He has potential and I am glad the Padres got him back, but he needs regular playing time and between Melvin, Jay and Kemp there was no time for Blash

I liked what I saw of Blasb in spring training and agree about needing at bats. I am not sure where he fits in the future outfield with Renfroe and Margot in the near future. It would be a nice problem to have if he can make contact.
mikeyst13
He’s almost 27 already, I doubt one more year of Triple-A is going to give him the polish he needs to be a “stud”. If it were going to all click for him it probably would have happened by now. It’s probably time to just accept that the best this guy is going to be is a low average, high strike out, big power guy and those guys are getting to be a dime a dozen these days.

This kid has potential, as evident by his HR total in the minors from last year. Unfortunately he looked completely confused and overmatched during his at bats this year. Hopefully a little more seasoning and confidence and we have a steal on our hands.

He got through waivers because there’s a good chance he’ll finish his career with a negative WAR and more strikeouts than total bases. He just became the fourth best outfielder for the El Paso Chihuahuas.
hitdaddy
There’s a chance no matter what his WAR ends up being, it will be better your couch potato WAR
T_Rexx2
Debatable. His couch potato war is 0. So if he has a negative war, 0 would be better….
baseballrat
How do you know?? Have you seen his couch?
ledezma_23
True our triple A is packed with good outfielders to like renfroe Dickerson Margot now blash and jankowski which is already on our 25 man roster it’s looking like they are gonna have good a good outfield in the next couple years
jbwithro
Didn’t Seattle still owe the Padres a PTBNL for Nick Vincent?
JT19
Thats what I thought and I figured Blash would eventually get sent back to the Mariners for them to flip him back as the PTBNL.
vinscully16
Great baseball name, Jabari Blash. Classic.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I guess the Padres really like this guy. It’s kind of hard to see how he would fit into future outfield plans, but I guess it’s worth keeping him down at triple A to see what e ends up doing. They didn’t really give up anything for him anyway.
chesteraarthur
That team just needs assets

I hope he works out for us. I like him.

I like Blash, too. Good athlete with plus power to dream on and a decent eye for walks. I get how unlikely it is Blash will suddenly break out at his age and after repeating AAA twice but will definitely be rooting for the Blash-man.

Janari is a AAAA player looks good in AAA but lost in the bigs. Have been going it clicked with him for a couple years now but hasn’t. Maybe with different instruction it might. Hope for the best for him. Other teams seem to take players not living up to the hype and turn them around hopefully that ends with new management and coaching..
kingfelix34
Janari could of gotten help from Edgar down in Seatle
kingfelix34
As I make fun of his spelling mistake I spell my own city wrong
kent814
First world problems lol

Just needs some at bats to sharpen his bat. Cut the swing down a bit. Melvin Upton will fall on his face soon enough.
mrpadre19
It’s only cash
