TODAY, 6:18pm: Jeffress has been reinstated but will not be in uniform tonight, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News tweets. He’ll need to rebuild strength for at least a week on a throwing program, Grant adds, and it remains unclear whether and when he’ll actually take the hill for Texas.
3:57pm: Jeffress has rejoined the team, but the organization has not yet made clear whether he’ll be activated today, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports (Twitter links).
YESTERDAY:Ā Right-handed reliever Jeremy Jeffress, who has been checked into an inpatient rehab clinic for nearly a month following a DWI arrest, is expected to rejoin the Rangers’ bullpen tomorrow, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).
Jeffress, who turned 29 yesterday, was arrested lateĀ last month for driving with a reported blood-alcohol content of .115, and marijuana was reportedly found in the glove compartment of his car as well, although Jeffress was not charged with possession.Ā Jeffress released a statementĀ containing a lengthy and seeminglyĀ heartfelt apology at the time he entered the rehab clinic, andĀ he’ll return to the club having spent between three and four weeks in treatment following his arrest.
The Rangers acquired Jeffress alongside Jonathan Lucroy in the trade that sent Lewis Brinson, Luis Ortiz and Ryan Cordell to the Brewers, and the former Milwaukee closer had settled into aĀ setup inĀ manager Jeff Banister’s bullpen before his arrest. In nine innings with Texas, Jeffress has a 4.00 ERA, and he’s pitched to a collective 2.52 ERA with 6.9 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 59.3 percent ground-ball rate in 53 2/3 innings this season. The Rangers control him for another three years via arbitration.

It’s nice to see a story like this. I don’t like the Rangers, but props to them for allowing him to do this, after giving up so much to get him. This is how you get your career back on track. It’s unrelated, but it’s also good seeing a good story like this on a day when Steve clevenger effectively ended his own career, well if his onfield play didn’t do that itself.

I met Steve in spring training in 2013, really nice guy. I just read the story about his tweets and that’s pretty unfortunate.
Not that it matters, but Carlos Marmol was not so nice that same spring training, lol.
ottomatic
Completely ridiculous that this guy is already rejoining the team. The Rangers continue to reveal themselves to be a classless organization. You’d think without Preller the overall ethics of an organization would improve by default, but that appears unlikely with Texas.

You must be an Astros fan

Classless? Letting a guy with an alcohol problem go to rehab and try to take care of his issues is classless? Detroit gave Cabrera a second chance after his alcohol issues, there are probably dozens of others I’m not thinking of now. Alcoholism can be overcome- not cured – but treated, for many people.

Be gone with you troll

How could they let this dirt bag play for them?
rodebaugh24
You must know JJ really well. Since you apparently know enough about him to call him a dirtbag and want him to be unemployed. I hope nobody ever sees something you do and makes a snap decision about you. Like you just did to JJ.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Idk why you are defending a guy who was arrested for DUI. I sure hope you or someone you know is never injured or killed by a drunk driver.
No one is ever going to have the opportunity to do that because I’m not a moron who likes to drive drunk.
thisisbaseball
I am surprised you can see us all down here from your awfully high horse. Why don’t you come down before you hurt yourself.
riffraff
westcoastryan – i think you are letting your emotions get the best of you here ( understandable if god forbid you have a personal loss to a dwi incident). Yes driving drunk can kill someone… so can speeding, running a red light, distracted driving, driving an unsafe vehicle etc etc. Are you suggesting that anyone guilty of those crimes lose their jobs simply because they ” could have” killed some? Have you never done any of those things ever? He’s getting help for his issues – he should be allowed to resume his career as long as the team wants him to or until he goes to jail ( which is possible even though noone was injured). Lots of people get second chances why not this guy?
ib6ub9
Ryan is a moron. He post stuff that make no sense. He no nothing about baseball or anything else (dumb ass). Everyone that makes a mistake shouldn’t get another chance. That’s how the world should be. Dumb ass
ib6ub9
just a moron
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Lol. You’re calling me a moron.
Just, lol…
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Driving drunk isn’t a mistake by the way.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Are you really comparing drunk driving to distracted driving? Wow. Just wow…
He chose to drive drunk, knowing it was illegal, and in life, bad choices have consequences.
gammaraze
I love how you say that “driving drunk isn’t a mistake” and yet we have a perfectly acceptable legal defense for ANY other crime when someone is mentally impaired. When you get drunk, you are mentally impaired, so yes, by definition drunk driving can be, and usually is, a mistake. There’s a reason why they made an awareness campaign centered entirely around “buzzed driving” because people don’t know that being buzzed means that you’re drunk.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
It’s a choice, not a mistake. You knew what you were doing, you knew it was wrong and you did it anyway. I have no sympathy for people who drive drunk.
gammaraze
Congratulations, you believe that mentally impaired people always know AND fully understand what they’re doing. How does it feel to be so wrong??
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Good luck trying to make that argument hold up in court
P.S. He chose to drink and drink to excess.
great_egret
Distracted driving is just as bad a drunk driving. what’s worse is that so many more people use their phones wile driving. I’ve had a friend killed by a drunk driver and another by distracted driving.
As far as Jeffress goes. he deserves to lose his driver’s licenses, not his job. His job has nothing to with drunk driving.
AidanVega123
You’ll have to excuse WestCoastRyan. He has a major tendency to make toxic comments on here.
takeyourbase
Easy. He did what he was asked after he made a poor choice. His sentence complete, moving on.
Justin 21
Once Ryan deems him a “bad dude” his rights are gone

Because obviously you’ve never done anything illegal in your life. Look, I get the seriousness of a DUI and I’m not trying to downplay that, but unless you’ve been a saint your entire life you have almost no right to criticize a guy for doing something like this. As far as we know, it’s the first time he’s done something like this and he issued an apology and went to rehab. At least he took the time to go to rehab, there are plenty of other people in the world (both celebrities and non-celebrities) that wouldn’t even step foot near a rehab facility.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Even if it’s the first time (which I doubt) it doesn’t matter. If he had killed someone try telling that person’s family “Hey give him a break, it’s the first time he’s even driven drunk” and see if they accept that.
JFactor
Everybody, no matter the sin, deserves the chance to move on with their lives and right their wrongs. Not every mistake should warrant a lifetime of judgment from some/all.
Now if you permanently end or alter someone else’s life, that’s a different story.
JJ did what he had to do, now it’s time for everyone to move on and let his future actions determine his character and personality and maturity.
JFactor
West coast, this exchange shows you to know incredibly little about drunk driving and the world around you.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
What’s there to know? It’s bad, illegal and dangerous and so is defending anyone who does it.
amishthunderak
Good for him getting cleaned up and hopefully staying that way. I’d there ant discipline expected from MLB?
YuReapwhatYuSow
They gave him the option of rehab or a suspension.
amishthunderak
Thanks.
