Braves Acquires Tyler Pike From Mariners As PTBNL

By Jeff Todd | December 9, 2016 at 2:23pm CDT

The Braves have acquired lefty Tyler Pike from the Mariners as the player to be named later in the recent trade between the organizations, per club announcements. The late-November swap sent righties Rob Whalen and Max Povse to Seattle in exchange for outfield prospect Alex Jackson, who’ll now be joined by Pike.

A third-round pick in the 2012 draft, Pike has twice reached the Double-A level, but spent all of 2016 at High-A Bakersfield. In his 125 2/3 innings there, Pike worked to a 4.01 ERA with 9.6 K/9 against 4.9 BB/9. While that’s obviously a rather hefty walk total, it’s actually just below his career levels. Clearly, he’ll need to lock in his command to earn a shot at making the Braves’ MLB staff at some point in the future.

Darn I was hoping all we would have to give up would be a lower level guy. Pike probably won’t be much but has some potential

It’s pretty much just to be useful. B-Ref is entirely independent of MLBTR.

I know – I had to hassle the Mets fan to preserve the rivalry.

Why the snide remark?? It was just a friendly question, there is no reason to act like that, especially unprovoked.

Also, yes, the stats are there for our browsing and reading pleasure, but there is also reasons why scouts don’t just read stats when grading and valuing prospects…

There are just some things that can be seen, that stats cannot effectively tell you..They are definitely a big piece of the puzzle, but stats are just a piece of the puzzle, seeing a prospect helps get the whole picture.

Just another one of Z’s picks that has stalled but he’s a young lefty that may be worth a flyer, lots of strikeouts.

For anyone that has actually seen him pitch, do you guys think maybe he could become a useful bullpen piece??

He has good strikeout numbers as a starter, but maybe he could really let his stuff play up in smaller stints??

Pike is no good. At least based on his numbers. High draft pick that has been unable to figure it out. Hopefully he does ok for us.

He was at one time in the top 10 prospects for the Ms I believe. Showed a lot early and was close to be considered untouchable. I think he had some minor injuries but no surgeries. He seems to be a typical Z draft pick looked like a great pick but never lived up to his potential. It seems the player development was severely lacking under Z and his group. There is no other way to explain how so many can’t miss guys could miss. Anyway hopefully the Braves can turn the kid around. I was rooting for him to make the Ms because we have the same last name.

Pike was a Top 10 prospect when he was drafted, but his control has consistently been a problem and he fell out of rankings for the last couple years as a result. He has swing and miss stuff, but he hasn’t been able to throw enough strikes to be competitive and deserve a promotion to the AA level. As an Ms fan, I was thinking that the PTBNL was going to be someone who might make the trade less appealing. However, Pike was never going to realize his potential with the Ms so I’m happy he completed the trade. Hopefully for him, the Braves can work some magic on him.

He’s 22 drafted in the third round. His prob;em has been his lack of control. Misses the zone a lot and walks a bunch.. Not too much there to be honest.

Good riddance. Not only was Pike bad at baseball, he’s one of those religious nuts that think God picks one team to win over the other. Also a Trump supporter. He’s all yours, Braves fans — a bad pitcher and a douchebag to boot! Check out his Twitter @tpike10

I learned to not follow most players on Twitter after watching Chipper Jones try to sick his followers on some Jane Doe who called him out on something random (mildly sexist thing he said maybe?). Try to see too much of any of these dudes’ lives and you’re asking to be disappointed.

So are you going to start a “not my pitcher” chant? The funny thing is that Donald really will be their president.
