Padres Designate Jabari Blash

By Jeff Todd | January 20, 2017 at 5:55pm CDT

The Padres have designated outfielder Jabari Blash for assignment, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter links). His roster spot will go to righty Trevor Cahill, whose previously reported signing is now official.

Blash, 27, has long been an intriguing talent. He struggled in limited MLB opportunities last year, though he has continued to thrive in the upper minors. In 646 total plate appearances at the Triple-A level, he owns a .246/.364/.550 batting line with 45 home runs.

San Diego had taken Blash in the Rule 5 draft, but couldn’t hold him on the major league roster after his tepid start to the year. The club ultimately acquired his rights permanently via trade, but evidently doesn’t see him as a likely part of the 2017 outfield mix. The Friars have a host of other interesting, largely inexperienced players set to vie for playing time this spring.

As for Cahill, you can read more about his deal here. It’s for $1.75MM, and Lin notes that there are also incentives. The particular bonuses available depend upon whether he is utilized as a starter or a reliever, which will presumably be sorted out this spring (and as the season progresses).

Not a shocker. Blash has lots of power potential, but he simply cannot hit for average and at 27 can no longer be considered a prospect.

Should of been keith hessler. With Buchter Hand on staff and kyle mcgrath in the minors they have enough lefties esp if richard gets pushed back out of the rotation.

I’d hold onto Quackenbush. Decent chance Brach 2.0 if you dfa him.

Not too surprising, he was buried behind several other younger, better outfielders on the Padres depth chart. I don’t expect him to make it through waivers tho.

C’mon braves our tiple A outfield could use him. It shouldnt be that hard to jump d peterson as next in line to fill in for an injured kemp or markakis.

Nothing to see here. The power is nice, but overall he’s just not very good.

I don’t know if I’d go that far. Dude’s a better athlete then most AAAA types. Not needed in SD, so no qualms there.

He was a AAAA player who was never going to produce for us. Seems like a good guy. Hope he gets a chance somewhere else.

Let’s go Brewers. Probably not a long term answer, but the young guys still aren’t probably ready and rather have him as a 4th OF than relying on Kirk Nieuwenhuis again.

Hopefully this means Margot is not going to be sent down for the first month just to delay his arbitration/free agency.

Why wouldn’t we do that? Is one month of him in a season when we aren’t going to contend really worth more than a full season of him when we have a good chance of contending?

Exactly. No way he doesnt spend April at AAA unless one of Dickjankfro gets hurt in ST. That’s getting him under control thru 2023…. coinciding nicely with Myers option year.

Margot has been in the minors since 2012 and spent a full year in Triple A last season. He should be given a fair shot to win the CF job in spring training.

the Padre thing to do would be to start the year with him and burn a good year down the road. I’d be happy if they do the un-padre thing and were smart about things for once.

Padres while losing 100 games have to sell some kind of hope to fans and Renfroe and Margit toiling in Triple A is not it

LOL stashing Renfroe and Margot in AAA for one month is not going to ruin Padres fans’ “hope” in any way, shape or form. Oh my God, “hope” lol… The absolute delusion.

I would love to see the A’s claim this guy. I saw him in Spring Training last year and saw him mash a HR. He’s better than whomever is the 40th man on A’s 40-man roster.

Sure he’s got strikeout issues but he would be worth a roster spot. IMO.

He’s also enormously likable. I can imagine him becoming a fan favorite quickly, if he can find a role.

A’s clubhouse, once one of the best, has been polluted (besides the sewage issues) by the likes of Danny Valencia and Brett Lawrie in recent years.

He and ABW (also DFA’d today) are very similar players
I would say Chris Carter ceiling, Darin Ruf floor
While ABW has more of a chance to break that Carter ceiling, he carries much higher risk. With Blash, he’s pretty much a finished product, what you see is what you get type guy. I can see him checking it a bit better than Ruf in the long run– solid power bench bat with a good on base percentage, Think Jason Giambi in his later years with Colorado and Cleveland. He would be a great fit in Kansas City.

I know this is a little off-topic, but what’s up with all these spam posts lately? I used to never see them on here, and now it seems like in almost every article there’s a post about a stay at home mom making money from her computer.

Blash seems like a possible fit for the Giants. They don’t really have a left fielder at all and don’t want to spend any more money. Last year’s steamer projections had Blash with 25 homers but a low average, although decent OBP. He’s a TTO guy. I think the Giants home run leader in 2016 had like 16.

In Blash’s case, it’s actually four true outcomes. He’s consistently been able to get hit by pitches as well. 57% of plate appearances last year ended in one of those four.
