Injury Notes: Thornburg, Price, Sanchez, Wright, Turner, Mesoraco

By Jeff Todd | April 19, 2017 at 8:16pm CDT

Here’s the latest on some injury situations from around the game:

  • Red Sox righty Tyler Thornburg has yet to progress to the point that he’s able to take the mound, manager John Farrell said today (via Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com, on Twitter). It’s not clear whether he’s making much progress, but it seems he is still long tossing in an effort to rebuild lost shoulder strength. At present, it seems as if there’s no clear timeline for the reliever to appear in the majors for the first time with his new team.
  • Meanwhile, the Red Sox seem to be slowing the rehab pace of lefty David Price, as Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. It’s not believed to be related to any setbacks, but plans of letting Price face live hitters appear to be on hold for at least another week, per the report.
  • The Yankees are still taking it slow with catcher Gary Sanchez, but there are some indications of progress, as Laura Albanese of Newsday writes. Sanchez, who is dealing with a biceps strain, was able to throw and take some dry cuts. He reported no issues, but the club isn’t planning to speed up his timeline, with manager Joe Girardi suggesting the original plan of a four-week absence hasn’t changed.
  • In another corner of New York, the Mets are seeing some good signs from third baseman David Wright. As David Lennon of Newsday tweets. Wright was able to field balls and play catch today, though he hasn’t yet begun making throws from third base. The veteran is working back from a shoulder impingement (which was suffered as he recovered from a neck issue that arose while dealing with a serious back issue).
  • Trea Turner could be back at shortstop for the Nationals sooner rather than later. As Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com tweets, Turner played in extended spring action and was even able to swipe a bag. That’s certainly promising news, particularly given that Turner is on the DL owing to a hamstring strain.
  • After catching full games on consecutive days, Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco seems about ready to be activated, as MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon writes. It seems the club will wait to see how Mesoraco feels before making a call, though manager Bryan Price also hinted there’s more to the evaluation. “This is kind of the point in time where we’ll re-assess what he needs for any type of finishing touches or polish before he’s activated,” Price said of the backstop, who is working back from hip and shoulder surgeries. Mesoraco has struggled at the plate in limited action thus far.

So are the Reds going to carry three catchers until Mesoraco gets hurt again? Or will they option Barnhart and keep Turner as the backup? Or will they offer Turner back?

      No way Barnhart gets optioned.

Exactly my thought. He’s proven himself to be a pretty solid Major League catcher. At least to start, I bet Barnhart either gets the majority of starts, or splits it 50/50 with Mes.

Until Ames starts hitting, there’s no rush to take lots of innings away from Barnhart. Break in Mes slowly, DH him in AL stadiums, and keep the long view on him. He’s missed a ton of time, so it is undoubtedly going to take him a long time to get his timing back.

Offer Turner back. If/when Mesoraco gets hurt again, it’s probably time to give Wallach a look. Brantly in Louisville and Nieto in Pensacola also have MLB experience if they want to go that route.

Mesoraco will never be a full time catcher again.

I agree with that! The Reds have used high draft picks on catchers that are working their way through the system.

Can we get a flow chart for David Wright’s chain of injuries?

      How about a children’s song?

The broken neck bone’s connected to the broken shoulder bone, the broken shoulder bone’s connected to the broken back bone, the broken back bone’s connected to the broken hip bone…

No chart needed. David is rolling the baseball towards first, however it is going askew as it hits the mound with Zero Velocity. No worries
Metsies fans. He is finished and will NOT let the cheap Wilpons collect money by going on the DL. So the team is stringing out their fans as they have over the past 25 years. Jeff Wilpon is playing Dodgers fantasy baseball and his riskiest move is signing a few two bit prospects.

Your bit is old. Focus on your own team and stop ripping on another one.

Do the mets have insurance on Wright? If they do, it does kind of suck for them that he keeps trying to play.

Should have Tonya Harding finish him off

They do. I’m not sure of the terms, but it could be based around the amount of DL days he accumulates.

Mets get a payout (not sure the amount) if DW is on the DL for more than 60 days in a year.

Everything resets every year, so last year’s DL time doesn’t count now.

Mets collect… If he misses 60 games in a season, Mets collect 75% of his salary until he plays again. By sitting out, he’s only helping the Wilpon’s.

The Sox should try to work out a deal with the M’s for Smyly. His shoulder is going to be fine, just like Price’s elbow!

No SP’s needed and especially no relievers. they have no room to keep Taylor on the 25 man roster already until either ABAD is canned, or some injury takes place.. meanwhile Barnes and hembree continue to throw too many innings/games as the middle consistent RH guys in the pen. with kelly a wild card every game he throws.

Adding taylor would help a bunch and unloading Abad.. Even for nothing in return would hurt little.

Gotta keep Turner. They r carrying 5 OUTFIELDERS. Option one of them and that way u don’t lose a possible piece of the future.

Carrying 5 outfielders is actually normal. Go look at the rosters of other teams and you’ll see. Also, Turner is in no way the future behind home plate that is a ridiculous statement. By the way, want to know what’s not normal? Carrying 3 catchers. Also, one of the outfielders you are referring to, Alcantara, has versatility and plays the infield too.

maybe, and this might be a bit of a reach, but maybe one of their catchers can learn how to play other positions, like maybe 1st or corner Outfield spots

I would like to see Mesoraco learn to play a corner outfield spot. I remember a few years ago they were going to try and get him some work in LF. I just don’t see him replicating the success of 2014 and I especially do not ever see him being an every day catcher. Obviously LF is not going to happen with Duvall out there.

Wright, unfortunately, is hanging on to a miracle. It’s not in the cards. Boy, the Mets can really use that salary and find themselves a real third baseman. He is and was always loved by Mets fans, but fate is inevitable. Let’s go get a Ryon Healy!
