Cardinals Select John Brebbia’s Contract, Designate Miguel Socolovich

By charliewilmoth | May 27, 2017 at 1:14pm CDT

The Cardinals have announced that they’ve selected the contract of righty reliever John Brebbia from Triple-A Memphis. To clear space on their 40-man roster, they’ve designated fellow righty Miguel Socolovich for assignment.

[Related: Updated St. Louis Cardinals Depth Chart]

The 27-year-old Brebbia spent time in the Yankees system and in independent ball before the Cardinals selected him in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft prior to the 2016 season. He mostly struggled at Double-A and Triple-A in 2016, although he posted solid peripherals. This year, he has fared well in Triple-A, posting a 1.69 ERA, 9.8 K/9 and a strong 1.7 BB/9. He has never pitched in the Majors.

The 30-year-old Socolovich shuttled back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis in 2015 and 2016 and generally did quite well in his big-league opportunities, but the Cardinals never cleared a more regular place for him in their bullpen, and removed him from their roster after he allowed 20 runs, 18 earned, in 18 2/3 innings this year. He was also out of options, so the Cardinals couldn’t simply send him back to Triple-A. Given his solid Triple-A record and his big-league performances this year, and the fact that his salary is near the league minimum, he could be a waiver claim for a team in need of relief help.

Braves should pick up socolovich. He’s been good in the minors for years and can’t be any worse than what they’re rolling out of the bullpen now

Well, it’s about time! They should’ve done this back when they activated Lyons rather than option Tuivailala (who’s been among their better relievers this season). Socolovich has been stinking it up all season, and unlike Cecil doesn’t have the benefit of a huge contact or extensive Major League track record to give him any more of a leash.

Why Cardinals??? Why wouldn’t you bring up some impact players from The minors??? Not some no name minor league journeyman that you are going to feed to the wolves because you current bullpen has been misused and over used. You did the same thing to a young no name pitcher last year!!! I haven’t seen hide nor hair of him since. What the heck is going on????

It’s hasn’t been the requisite 10 days before they can bring back Tuivailala, and Weaver and Gonzales need to keep starting every five games in AAA at this point. What impact reliever are you referring to who’s put up similar stats to this guy? He’s earned his call-up. Besides, he might be sent back down again before long once Martinez comes off the DL, as that would be a good point to go back to a 5-man bench.
