Red Sox Place David Price On DL, Aren’t Currently Planning To Pursue Starters

By Jeff Todd | July 28, 2017 at 3:30pm CDT

3:30pm: President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski addressed the Boston media today and definitively stated that he’s not in the market for rotation help (Twitter link via the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier). “We’re not going to go out and make a big trade for a starting pitcher,” said Dombrowski, adding that Doug Fister is slated to step back into the Boston rotation.

Evan Drellich of CSN New England tweets that Dombrowski was confident that Price will return this season, though he was again non-specific about the nature of Price’s injury. Sean McAdam of the Boston Sports Journal adds that the injury was described as inflammation in Price’s elbow, not his forearm. His timeline for a return to the mound is uncertain.

11:18am: At present, Boston doesn’t intend to enter the market for starters, per Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network (via Twitter).

10:04am: Price will go on the DL, per MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter).

9:13am: It has been an eventful season for Red Sox lefty David Price, who opened the year on the DL and has since become embroiled in a running spat with the Boston media. Now, with the trade deadline just days away, Price is again dealing with elbow issues, according to Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe (via Twitter).

The full severity of the problem isn’t yet apparent, but Price underwent an MRI yesterday, per ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (Twitter link). Notably, it’s the “same forearm issue” that the southpaw dealt with earlier this year, per Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald (via Twitter), and it’s likely that he’ll be scratched from his scheduled start this evening.

It’s too soon to guess at the implications of this news. But it’s obviously troubling to hear of new elbow questions for a Red Sox club that was hoping to count on Price as a key member of the staff down the stretch and into the postseason. And that’s all before considering the massive future obligations still owed under the contract that drew Price to Boston before the 2016 season.

If the Red Sox feel there’s enough concern to warrant a look at the trade market, they’ll find a long list of possible targets. But the few impact hurlers that may be available figure to draw high prices. Unless there’s a clear indication that Price could be looking at an extended absence, then, the club may prefer to simply go with what it has and hope for the best. It’s important to remember that the August revocable waiver period could also offer some possible solutions.

Your source is a goof ball. Price should have gone on the shelf in spring training for tommy John surgery. However he wanted to see if he could squeeze this year out as his MO has been to exit Boston early.

He hates the city’s critical fans and the press.

Now he will play the game and at best return at the end of next summer, period.

Sox lovers please save your criticism until the final diagnosis, to save your face.

Hey skip. You need to fast forward to TODAY and not keep living your life in rewind about past times. Your team is living in yesterday with Trader Dave burning through what was one fine collection of minor league depth.

The David Price deal will go down as one of the worst deals ever in MLB history. There will not be any “well look at the good years that he performed. He contributed to a Winning team. He was great in the post season.”

Now focus on the future and look at the Yankee lineup and minor league system. Take a look at our roster this year and next.

The “predicted” 2017 World Series winner comes up EMPTY.

Regardless no tears amoungst the true Boston faithful. Price is a spoiled brat and self absorbed douche bag.

Funny, Yank fans are notorious for bringing up the past. I know it feels good to have a strong farm system, but good prospects either get called up or traded for Mlb players. The Sox have most positions filled by young homegrown players. “Trader Dave” has done a hell of a job trading minor league prospects for very good players- Sale, Kimbrel, Pomeranz.

Sox had the best farm system in MLB for a few years and they had 3 last place finishes. Now the prospects are either playing for the big team or got traded for key pieces. Won division last year and will take it again this year. So tell me again why we should be upset with Dombrowski? For doing what it takes to win?

          Two concepts:

          Bad contract (see Price)

Look at the 3B mess and the guy that they traded away.

They had the best farm system BEFORae Trader Dave emptied it. The cupboard is bare.

If they win it all it is worth it. However WS Champions must actually play 162 games and the post season. So contrary to Sox fans winter and spring bravado, you are not the best team in baseball.

In fact there are serious faults in this design. Plus the team is missing Ortiz as an anchor. Do you think Hanley would get away with his crap (can’t play 1B because of a sore shoulder when he can bat?) if Savid wasn

He signed to grab the most money and included an opt out. Good for him. He has been far from a model citizen. Now he faces a career sentence–being stuck in Boston as he can’t afford to opt out.

1-he was fragile to start. Too many hi stress innings when he was younger.

        2-he is fragile.

3-he is way overpaid for a pitcher that has zero track record for post season success.

4-he will NOT opt out. He’s not stupid. He signed with the team that blew all others away financially even though he DID NOT want to pitch in Boston.

5-he is taking John Henry’s money and at the end the deal will go down as one of the absolute worst signings in MLB history.

      I second that.

      This isn’t just a coincidence

Let’s not just think recent –

He’s been one of the best pitchers in the game the last several years

      His contract is ridiculously overpriced

He clearly does not understand how to handle the media in Boston. – we might laugh it off but just look at some of the great players who couldn’t handle large media – randy Johnson anyone?
Not even is built like a Jeter or an Ortiz

      Few scenarios
He doesn’t opt out – just can’t leave that much on the table no way.

He opts out – he’d rather boot 50mil and go somewhere where he only has to handle a few local reporters.

I honestly thought if he pitched semi decent and was healthy he would opt out and get the F out of here

But if he is truly hurt and this season isn’t going to turn around for him- I just can’t see him hitting free agency

Picturing division on the line. Last game, no wild card possibility. Big moment. Price to Judge. Derek Jeter 3000 hit type fat pitch and Sterling chanting “The Yankees win, Price opts out and Farrell gets canned” all in one breath. And I’m a Sox fan!

Rays ran here. Love to see Boston overpay for our broke down sloppy seconds and am beyond pumped to watch the Yanks & Sox pitching implode over the next two months leading to Rays taking the division…ultimately leading to more big market drama, followed team canabilism.

A’s have a future all star 3B in Chapman so they will not be all in on Devers. They would listen if the Bosox offer up their CF prospect. The Yanks choosen not to offer any of their top prospects for Gray so don’t be mad at the A’s that the Yanks choose to keep prospects. Mateo is not a center piece prospect for Gray. yank fans act like Gray could be had for their 10th best prospect and a few low level prospects.

Price has had these exact elbow problems in the past. Probably why other teams weren’t even close to matching Boston’s $ they lured him in with. Price has always hated Boston. Just like Crawford did. Serves Boston right every time a Panda/Price etc.stupid decision backfires. A clue – when everyone in baseball laughs at you for a free agent signing, you probably guaranteed too much $ for the risk you bought. Enjoy your loads of cash as you rehab until 2019, DP. Can’t blame you for taking the $ they waved.

If Price needs TJ surgery, and it seems like the most likely scenario, he’ll be on the shelf until spring training 2019. He’ll spend 2019 trying to regain his form, and by 2020 we’ll see if he’s effective or the lefty version of Matt Cain.

Boston will definitely enter the Sonny Grey sweepstakes as Dombrowski has no problem trading whoever he needs to to get his man. As s a Yankee fan, I hope this doesnt make Cashman desperate and give them one of Torres/Frazier and Sheffield/Adams just to stop Boston from getting him. But I think there is a better than not chance that Grey or Verlander are wearing a Boston uniform at some point this season.

Boston’s desire to not go over the tax threshold, and restart their clock I believe will eliminate Verlander from the conversation.

Looks like both Price and Sale both have a flaw in their delivery that will eventually lead to TJ Surgery. I have no idea how Sale’s “scarecrow” stance has not lead to surgery already. Way too much torque on the elbow in getting that ball up and over.

Look at Verlander for a perfect delivery. The elbow is up an the ball is much higher as he is winding up.

Price has drifted into this “Tommy John Twist” delivery where he points the ball at second base.

When I say perfect delivery, I mean to avoid elbow injury.

JV, like Price has been tweaking his delivery. They both need to go back to what got them there. JV is doing well now. He Ked 5 of his first 6 and got the ball up to 97MPH in his last pitch of the game in his last start.

He had three horrible games, it ERA is deceptively high for how good he is right now.

Bottom line, a smart GM will know what I just posted, and get HUGE value out of JV for the next 2.5 years.

Sale will break down eventually. His body is not built for that “scarecrow”. I would NOT sign him long term.
Price had a near perfect deliver in Tampa that he tweaked in Boston, probably to keep his MPH high as he gets older. It makes him more injury prone.

Stay strong David Price. Just standing up for his teammates. As a Boston fan I love that and so does Dustin Pedroia. Pedey said in an interview today that Price is one of his favorite teammates he has ever played with. That is coming from one of the grittiest and hard working players in the game. Also, anyone who thinks Price isn’t actually injured just isn’t a smart person. This is a guy who has been playing baseball for his whole life and who has shown he is a fierce competitor throughout the entirely of his high school, college, and major league games. If his arm would let him, he would be on that mound starting every single game. The Red Sox aren’t putting him on the DL because of anything other than his elbow discomfort. Who would rather start Fister over Price? Nobody

    Let me get this straight-
    Boston Media-
A UFA is offered a 7yr $220+mil contract by the team you are covering. He takes the offer because the TEAM offered the contract. In my eyes the player is SMART to take the contract offer.

He didn’t have a great first season & his 2nd season he has experienced pain & inflammation in his elbow so you are a jerk to him?

Maybe you should be spending more of that time busting the B*ll* of Dombrowski than Price.

That is why I like the Rays. In no way will I have to see this drama over $200+mil contracts & injuries.
