Greg Bird To Undergo Ankle Surgery

By Jeff Todd | July 18, 2017 at 10:43am CDT

TODAY: Bird released a statement through his agent, saying that he is hopeful that the procedure will finally resolve what had been an “increasingly frustrating” situation with his ankle. He also expressed a determination to return to the majors this season.

YESTERDAY: Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will undergo surgery on his right ankle, manager Joe Girardi told reporters including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (via Twitter). Per the skipper, Bird will be down for at least six weeks while recovering, but it isn’t clear just how soon he’ll again represent an option at the major league level.

While the news isn’t promising for New York, it had been anticipated by this point. Bird has struggled with ongoing ankle issues for much of the year, and was recently diagnosed with os trigonum syndrome. The organization will obviously take the long view here and hope the young slugger can fully put the ankle woes behind him.

Notably, the 24-year-old will continue accruing MLB service time for the duration of his DL stint — as he has been all year. He will have over two full years of service on his ledger at season’s end, even though he has played in just 65 total games in the majors.

That “Insider” must feel like an idiot now. For those who don’t know , there were rumors about a week ago saying a Yankee Insider felt there was nothing wrong with Bird and that he could be faking the injury because he’d be too scared to play since he likely wouldn’t be as good as Judge or Sanchez.

Jose makes sense but he’d probably cost both Torres and Frazier (maybe another 1 or 2 as well) IF the Yankees package to get Abreu and Robertson

I’m not saying the Yankees should do that. I just think that’s would Hahn would ask for.

I agree that it would require more than A ball throw-ins, but both Torres and Frazier seems a bit steep. Definitely one of those plus more lesser, but not both.

I agree it’s steep but you have to think that’s what Hahn would ask for. I read he asked for both of them for Quintana. He’d probably do the same for Abreu + Robertson.

I read he asked for Torres OR Frazier (plus more obviously) in a Quintana deal.

In regards to Abreu, I don’t think the Sox are actively looking to move him at all. I think they’re perfectly happy with him being the veteran clubhouse leader for when the prospects (especially Moncada) start coming up. That being said, if they were offered both Torres and Frazier, I think they would pull the trigger. As a Sox fan, I also think that’s a little too steep.

Abreu makes sense for the Yanks, but yes the cost would be high. Doubt that fits into long term plans

Agone just started hitting off the tee, if the Dodgers pay most of his contract does anyone think he would be a good fit for the Yanks. He could possibly hold 1B down next year til Bird or whomever is ready. Thoughts?

I do see Alonso as a perfect match for the Yanks short/long term plans

DRob is a perfect fit here. He has history with this team.

Frazier can fill in at 3B with Headley sliding over to 1B or either way. Seems like a match….

After all the buzz regarding Frazier to the Red Sox, I’m guessing Yankees are throwing some chips in or this deal would be over already. Curious to see who folds first….

“Frazier can fill in at 3B with Headley sliding over to 1B or either way.”

That kinda misses the point. The Yankees are looking for a 3B because Headley hasn’t produced enough offensively. Moving him to 1B would only exacerbate the problem. Yanks don’t want someone who will play alongside Headley, they want someone who will repeal and replace Headley.

It would be a bummer to see them deal Blake Rutherford to Oakland in that deal. I read that the A’s scouted him yesterday. Consensus seems to be that he was a steal in last year’s draft. It would be great to see him develop for the Yanks. Alonso is a mediocre guy in a career year and Gray is consistently hurt.

Yankees may take it,maybe sub out Sheffield for Adams and Cashman bites. He doesn’t have to give up Frazier or Torres. Gets a nice 1B rental and a young starter signed through 2019. Rutherford is hard to give up, but he’s years away.

Yeah Yanks can get a deal done without Frazier or Torres being included. Rutherford won’t be ready until at least 2020 and by then you’ll hopefully have Judge and Frazier along with Fowler or an extended Hicks. Not to mention a few other options in the system.

        Um….

The “luxury tax”, later “competitive balance” tax, was created by the 1996 collective bargaining agreement. GMS III most certainly did have to contend with the luxury tax. Yanks wrote a large check to MLB every year. Resented it every year too.

When was George Steinbrenner trying to win? Maybe in the 1975-78 time period. After that, it was all and only about George getting publicity as he drove the team into the ground for 12 years until he was banned. By the time he came back, actual baseball people took over and George was too addled to get in the way anymore. That’s how things got better.

According to MLB.com, the Yankees #25 prospect is Jorge Guzman (1 of the 2 pitchers they got from the Astros in the Brian McCann trade. He’s a 21 year old SP that works 97-103 with his fastball deep into games. With that said, he wouldn’t be a headliner in a package for any deadline studs (Gray, Darvish, Robertson, etc etc) but he could probably fetch a rental middle reliever or be a secondary piece to a trade for a rental 1B/3B. You say this site is full of delusional Yankees fans, but in reality, this site is full of delusional (and some reasonable) fans of EVERY team…

I’m not desperate for the Yanks to trade for a 1B. We have a couple of rookies we can play in Ji-Man Choi and AAA’s Mike Ford. If the cost is a top 5 organizational prospect then I’ll pass.

Furthermore, we have to look at things realistically. Our current rotation highlights a shaky Tanaka, a past his prime but solid Sabathia and two fairly inexperienced kids. We are not 1 or 2 fading stars away from being a WS contender and that is the only goal.

Make smart incremental moves and see what your young guys can do. Shoot for 2018 as the year you really try and compete.

Here’s a deal for Oakland troll fans which is better then any deal I’ve heard them offer.
First off Rutherford is not in any Oakland deal neither is Frazier or Torres!

If that’s an issue go to Brewers for Bronson.

    Deal is as follows:
Florial and Acevedo (two top ten prospects)
Bryan Mitchell and Ian Clarkin (two top 20s) plus a fringe prospect.

But with this deal I’m thinking the Yanks are giving up too much!

Also can do Aaron Hicks, Florial, Mitchell, Clarkin for Sonny Gray and Jed Lowrie, no Alonso in the deal.

Headley moves over to first and Lowrie to third.

Hicks coming into his own, still young, with two years of control that Oakland can either flip or sign long term to play CF.

    Couple options there for ya.
