David Phelps Trade To Mariners Reportedly “Imminent”

By Jeff Todd | July 20, 2017 at 9:50am CDT

9:52am: Yahoo’s Jeff Passan tweets that the trade is at the finish line, and a deal is “imminent.” MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports that the Marlins are seeking a pair of quality prospects in exchange for Phelps (Twitter links). Fellow right-hander AJ Ramos is not a part of this trade and is being discussed with multiple other teams, Frisaro adds.

9:12am: MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that the two sides are actually “fairly close” to completing a trade that would send Phelps to Seattle.

8:56am: FOX’s Ken Rosenthal also hears the two sides are talking but says there’s no match to this point, as the Marlins don’t love the Mariners’ minor league system (Twitter link).

8:48am: The two sides are indeed discussing a possible Phelps swap, Feinsand tweets. Nothing between the two sides is done just yet, as talks are apparently ongoing.

Phelps, 30, would give Seattle a setup arm that can be controlled through the 2018 season. He’s earning $4.6MM this season on the heels of a breakout 2016 campaign and has worked to an impressive 2.69 ERA with 11.1 K/9 against 4.0 BB/9 through 133 2/3 innings dating back to Opening Day 2016. Phelps also has a 46.4 percent ground-ball rate in that time, which checks in a couple of percentage points above the league average, and he’s working with a career-best 94.4 mph average fastball velocity in 2017 as well.

July 20, 1:02am: Seattle “had been working on” a scenario involving David Phelps of the Marlins, Feinsand tweets, though it’s not yet clear if he’s the player that is currently nearing a uniform swap.

July 19, 12:37am: The Mariners are closing in on a trade to pick up a relief arm, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter). It’s unclear at this point just who could be heading to Seattle, or even whether it’s a significant trade.

With a victory today, the M’s have pulled back to .500 and are firmly in the Wild Card hunt — though the AL West is still a one-horse race. While the club arguably is most in need of rotation upgrades, rare is the team that couldn’t improve by adding another piece to the bullpen.

In Seattle’s case, the current unit has produced middle-of-the pack overall results (4.07 collective ERA), though the metrics suggest that the true performance hasn’t been quite that good overall. Closer Edwin Diaz has had his peaks and valleys, though he has been firmly on the upswing during a dominant July. Indeed, that holds true of the entire relief corps.

The youthful Diaz could be bumped into a roving role if GM Jerry Dipoto aimed big. Setup man Nick Vincent has been the team’s best reliever, but perhaps could stand to be paired with another quality late-inning arm in front of Diaz. It’s conceivable that a big lefty would make sense. Southpaws James Pazos and Marc Rzepczynski have generated good results in the earned run department, but the former has been knocked around of late and the latter has increasingly shown worrying control issues.

Or, of course, the M’s could simply be bolstering their depth with a relatively insignificant addition. Given Dipoto’s sometimes frenzied trading history, it’s anyone’s guess just what this apparently pending transaction might represent.

Just better not trade O’Neil or Neidert unless it’s for someone really good like Hand.

The only way I would trade O’Neil or Neidert as Lewis is untouchable, is for a young controllable starter like Cole, Gray or Teheran that can help in the future.

Definitely not. 1 current blue chip prospect in Lewis who won’t get traded. Not trading Carlson or Evan White, so basically we have O’niell who could net a fair pitcher back and Neidart who has a ceiling of a No. 2 or 3 starter in the MLB. Your crazy if you think that would bet a return for an ace like Cole after what the Cubs gave up for Quintana

Well I’m not looking at 1 for 1 swap, of course you would have to trade either Lewis and O’Neil, or Lewis and Neidert. And then add in some guys like Brayan Hernandez and Joe Rizzo.

We have a ton of OF depth. Giving up O’Neil wouldn’t deplete the farm. The M’s window is NOW. We have to give up value to get value. I totally trust JD to get creative and go for it. Anything can happen in a one game playoff and in a division series the Ms could absolutely win.

I mean, if Feinsand had said “Mariners are looking around at bullpen options,” I’d have just possibly noted it in a notes post. But he says there’s something nearing completion, which in industry lingo typically means we’re on the verge of a trade (hammering out final details, doing medicals) that will go down in the very near term. Figured our readers would like to be aware of that strong possibility and begin considering the potential implications.

@24thekid With regards to your original post, that’s like one of us readers saying “24thekid only posted his response just to post a response”, which is nonsensical because who cares? You know that MLBTR serves as something of a community discussion for fans of all 30 MLB teams and all this article did was initiate the incoming information to the many readers of the site. Sure, it lacked details at first; but it gave Mariners fans like you and I something to do at midnight when all we were doing at the time was looking at MLBTR anyway. That and there’s over fifty responses now, so we can determine the post did not go unappreciated. Go M’s, and thanks MLBTR for always providing a healthy discussion.

Reed is a FA end of season, so not going to get a haul for him. I just took a quick glance at SEA prospects, Povse is the kind of pitcher the Mets like,
        Big (6’8″) inning-eaters,
Rizzo is a 3b with good contact rate and the Mets have a need there and very few prospects at the position.
Mets farm has been depleted in the last 2 years with alot of players moving to the majors. Merely speculation, just for fun.

We should offer Atlanta Tyler O’Neill, Nick Neidert, Vogelbach, Brayan Hernandez, & Joe Rizzo for Julio Teheran (yes his era is 4.69 but he pitches great on the road & would lift perfectly behind Felix & Pax) & Arodys Vizcaino ( who could either be our setup guy or closer so Diaz could pitch whenever there is a high leverage situation). Maybe see if they’ll throw in Rex Brothers (he might have some gas left in the tank). I know 1B is blocked by Freeman & Adams but Vogelbach would give them another trade piece & I dont see Vogelbach ever becoming our everyday 1st baseman.

They should really be going after 2 relievers. If I was Dipoto I would’ve just kept Montgomery. Wasn’t Vogelbach the main piece in that deal? That seems like a mistake. Some combination of Reed/Phelps/Neshek would be a good addition and another starter would be good. Not even an ace or anything just a 3/4 starter. I feel like they could make those moves and still retain their top guys like O’Niell.

Phelps, or someone similar; that would be cool, considering he would probably come cheap. Cash and a couple player to be named later types. I’d much rather see us spend resources on Samardija, or another starter of his caliber. O’neill, Volgebach, Peterson, Rizzo, there’s certainly several prospects that we can stand to part with. I have faith in DiPoto, he’s not going to mess with our core, and I think he has a good chance of getting a deal done that will improve the pitching.
