Padres Outright Rowan Wick

By Jeff Todd | March 28, 2018 at 2:34pm CDT

The Padres have outrighted right-hander Rowan Wick after he cleared waivers, per a club announcement. That move frees up a 40-man spot for the club’s final roster decisions.

Claimed off waivers from the Cardinals during the offseason, Wick will land somewhere in the Padres system to open the 2017 season. He’s known for a big arm but is still new to pitching after moving out from behind the plate. Last year, he worked to a 3.19 ERA in 42 1/3 innings, most of them in the upper minors, while recording 8.9 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9.

Padres have to trade a couple of “one-year wonders” first…then we’ll have room for you on the roster. Potential candidates for this years “AJ’s special” trade/fleecing:
Brad Hand (worth more in trade now than last season because of extension…
Eric Hosmer (Both NY teams want to make the playoffs and have a dead spot @ 1st base…
    Matt Strahm…
    Phil Maton…
Kirby Yates (had 87 strikeouts in 56 innings for the Padres last season…

Its Christmas once again!! GO AJ GO!

Correct, and why would the Padres trade a guy who they just anointed the new face of the franchise? Ridiculous comment.

And also, a player traded in the middle of a long-term contract can opt to become a free agent anyway, so Hosmer would almost certainly do that.

Plus even if he didn’t have the FNTC , he couldn’t be traded until July 1st anyway.

I listed like 4 or 5 other names, do you geniuses have anything to say about them. And we already made several trades in the past calendar year so lets talk facts and not just how you guys feel. so a full no trade clause means we cant trade Hosmer even if he approves it? LOL you guys are rich, I might approve a trade to a 100+ win team for the next 4-5 years. Seriously look at the roster, The Yankees are loaded everywhere except for 1st base. just watch and see.

Did you not read my response? If the Yankees (or anyone) were interested in paying Hosmer all that money they would have done it when he was a FREE AGENT!
And Preller has yet to make ONE significant trade since the suspension.

Thats your opinion, and when you think it will put you over the top, teams do crazy things at the trade deadline…are you a new baseball fan? Because look back 20 years at the trade deadline and look what teams gave up or money they took on their books, its not that far fetched to speculate a Hosmer trade. And did you read my response? I read all 7 of ypurs you bum. Lets talk about someone other then hos, the trades are coming bud.

Nope, it’s a fact. No one is trading for Hosmer. Especially not the Yankees who want to reset their luxury tax penalty and (I believe) were never once linked to Hosmer this offseason.
Anyway, you are the same clown who said the Padres would be in contention for a Wild Card spot in late August so we probably should have just ignored you to begin with. That is what I will do now.

If one of the NY teams were willing to pay Eric Hosmer all that money they wouldn’t give up prospects to do it they would have just signed him in the first place.

According to roster resource the padres are currently projected to carry 6 bench players!! I haven’t seen that in a long time on opening day even for an NL team

That’s because they are opening the year with 4 in the rotation. They still have 7 in the bullpen.

Pretty sure they are opening with 5 guys in the rotation. Richard, Mitchell, Erlin, Perdomo and Ross.

Erlin was slated to be long man in the pen. So he is technically still a bullpen guy will just fill in spot starts

From Dennis Lin, Erlin will pitch Friday in Lamet’s slot in the rotation. The Padres will go with a 4 man rotation to start the season. Because of the days off in the schedule, a 5th starter is not needed until April 6th. Ross will be sent to extended spring training until he is needed then.

Can’t even consider moving Hosmer in the first year of a deal, even if his contract permits it, unless he specifically requested it That’d kill any future free agents from wanting to come to San Diego.

Hosmer won’t be moved. You’d have to find someone willing to take his contract first. Considering that all the other teams had the right to pay him that money without giving up any prospects this offseason and they all said no, why would they want to trade for him now?

The Padres are not going to trade Hosmer because he is the new face of their franchise. The cornerstone they are building around.
With Greg Bird out at least 2 months, maybe more, do you think the Yankees might be in the market for a 1B? Other teams will be in that same situation or worse at some point this season.

They’re not going to trade for an 8-year contract they had no interest in giving out last month just because the incumbent is out for two months. Especially considering the Yankees want to stay under the luxury tax threshold.

But isn’t Hosmer making “only” 18 million a year? It’s not Cabrera money and aren’t no trade clauses put in so the player can shake down the acquiring team for “moving expenses.” Sometimes…..

He’s making $20m a year for 5 years then $13m a year for 3 years. But more importantly, the other 29 teams had the right to sign Hosmer for that much money during the offseason and they didn’t. So why would they give up prospects to do it later on?

Teams situations change. Any team that is expected to be competitive and then has an injury at 1B will be in the market for a 1B. That is why they would give up prospects to trade for him later.

The Yankees’ situation hasn’t changed. They still want to stay under the luxury tax threshold for this year and they still don’t think Hosmer is worth 8/$144m.
