The Rays “would love to talk” with the Mets about catcher Wilson Ramos if New York is interested in absorbing most of his $10.5MM salary, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes. Whether the Mets are eyeing Ramos is unclear, but the NL-best club (11-1) is without its top two backstops, the injured Travis d’Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki, which could put it in the market for help behind the plate. D’Arnaud won’t play again this year (Tommy John surgery), though Plawecki should return within a month from a fracture in his left hand. Therefore, the Mets might not feel the need to do anything drastic, such as taking on most of Ramos’ money.
Here’s more from the AL East:
- The Yankees’ best prospect, infielder Gleyber Torres, could end up in the majors soon if the Miguel Andujar–Tyler Wade tandem doesn’t start producing for the club, George A. King III of the New York Post observes. Andujar, also one of the Yankees’ top prospects, collected a double and a triple in their win over the Tigers on Friday. The third baseman has just five hits in 34 plate appearances, though, while Wade – primarily a second baseman – has even fewer knocks (three) in 35 PAs. Torres could play either third or second, thus bumping either Andujar or Wade. The Yankees wouldn’t need help at the hot corner had Brandon Drury not gone on the DL ith severe migraines on April 7. Drury could return April 17, but that’s not likely, according to King. It just so happens that the Yankees could gain an extra year of team control over Torres, 21, by waiting until April 18 to promote him, King points out. Torres has made his case for a call-up this year, having batted a tremendous .387/.412/.548 over 34 PAs at the Triple-A level.
- The Red Sox have managed an American League-leading 12-2 record without left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who’s on the DL with a forearm flexor strain. But Pomeranz is nearing his 2018 debut, according to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. The 29-year-old made a Double-A rehab start Friday, and his next outing will be the Red Sox, according to manager Alex Cora. Pomeranz will take the hill either Thursday against the Angels or Friday versus the Athletics. This could be the last season in Boston for Pomeranz, who’s scheduled to hit free agency next winter.
- The Red Sox selected lefty Trey Ball seventh overall in 2013 with the hope that he’d make an impact in the majors as a starter. Five years later, they’ve moved him to the bullpen, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. The 23-year-old has taken to his new relief role thus far, having pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings at the Double-A level this season. Smith’s piece, which is worth checking out in full, contains several quotes from Red Sox vice president of pitching development and assistant pitching coach Brian Bannister regarding Ball’s transition.
I hope the Redsox “Ball isn’t related to the Lakers Ball.
Yup they are all related, this ones name is “Lik’Ma Ball”.
Lol
And the Red Sox had no depth in rotation, member?
Now their #7 pitch would be #3 on most al east teams.
Outside of Kris Bryant and Aaron Judge, that 2013 draft class was a major disappointment all around. Hopefully Ball can succeed in the pen.
To be fair, a lot of the guys were drafted out of High School and are just now reaching ML ready status
I’d also point out Knebel and Bellinger have worked out fine so far
Should the Mets trade for Ramos they would be going with the same catching tandem the Nats used from 2014-16 until/unless Plawecki returns. And they will likely find out why the Nats let each of them walk away.
Yeah and they signed Matt Wieters instead. Good for them.
Ramos was terrific for the Nats. He didn’t walk away, he was carried away when he blew out his knee in the last week of the 2016 season. Rays signed him for two years because they could punt the first half season while he was recovering from surgery, which didn’t make sense for the Nats as a contender. I watch Sox games, Ramos is back to being a great player. Please, get him out of the division.
In what world is Ramos a great player right now? As a Rays fan, I can tell you that simply is not true. He didnt even seem replacement level last year, and this year has been dreadful.
But before the season started, I could have sworn Andujar and Wade were superstars in the making according to Yankees fans on here…weird.
Andujar still quite possibly could be, Wade is a nice player but probably not superstar status, though I know what you mean about SOME NYY fans labelling kids future HOF’s as soon as they don the pinstripes…far too early to predict but no harm in being hopeful
To small a sample size by far. Season is only a couple weeks old.
Could you imagine giving up on young, top prospects after FOURTEEN days? Talk about a knee jerk reaction. Wade could develop into a super utility like Zobrist, but with speed. Pitchers seem to be getting the better of Andujar, who seems to he trying to do too much but showed good signs in his game against the Tigers. There is still a lot to like about Andujars bat and hes shown both good and bad defense in his time in the bigs so far but mostly good. Im still very high on Andujar.
Does anybody know if those flu symptoms that seemed to be affecting Wade are still bothering him?
Apparently wade lost 8 pounds during his sickness and has said he feels weaker and cannot drive the ball yet
Yikes, hope hes drinking a lot of water and orange juice.
Zobrist was one of the best players of his generation. That would be Wade 100th percentile outcome. Let’s be reasonable.
“Zobrist was one of the best players of his generation.”
Seriously? The guy had one very good year with TB but other than that he’s a .260 hitter. Zobrist was VALUABLE because he could plug into infield and outfield positions and that helped expand the bench, but to say he was one of the BEST players is a gross overstatement.
Key role on two series-winning teams? Keep yr season batting average stat–I’ll take the guy who comes through when it matters. (Batting avg? Who pays attn to that anymore?)
Good comment koz16….Zobrist value is that he can play multiple positions.
If he was a generational player he’s still be a Ray!
You mean he performs in the clutch ? Yea, that’s been proven to not be a real thing.
Give the kids time. The Yankees knew this could happen and rolled the dice to stay under the tax threshold. Sox fans, remember last year when the team tried everything but trading for an expensive third baseman before bringing up Devers?
It’s been two weeks…
“George A. King III” is the biggest idiot in baseball. He’s never right about anything. So if he says Torres is coming up, the kid is doomed to play the minors for months.
I imagine that if Torres is to come up, it’ll be around the all-star break.
I’m thinking May 1st
Anytime from 04/18 per another article, based on the team maximizing control years.
Typical Rays. Ahhhh
Tyler Wade is a rookie of the year candidate lmao
Rays FO is playing hard to get with Ramos, I see. Maybe he gets back to his old self this year but I dont know why even the Mets would want him right now.
Yankees and Sox fans are fun. I actually mean that; although the vast majority of these comments are a little out-of-hand, I like that people are so very passionate about their team. I am a Padres fan, but mostly a fan of baseball. There’s no real rivalry for San Diego, and the team has mostly been bad, so it’s fun to watch this thread. Keep it up, guys!
If and when the Padres become consistently good, rivalries will develop naturally within the division. I can’t ever recall the team being good over a period of three or more years.
The Mets would be the smartest team in the world if they were to agree to seating all of Ramos’s 10 million dollars and package Archer in the deal and send Wheeler or Harvey to Tampa.
That is bananas. Why would Tampa trade Archer for an expensive rental in Harvey?
Forget Archer but Harvey could be used to offset part of the Ramos contract. My guess is between salary and prospects, Ramos is too expensive for the Mets. Thing is even if KP gets healthy, he’s marginal at best.
