Giants To Sign Jordan Schafer

By Jeff Todd | April 3, 2018 at 2:53pm CDT

The Giants have agreed to a minor-league pact with lefty Jordan Schafer, according to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation (Twitter link). Particulars of the agreement are not yet known.

Schafer, a former MLB outfielder, has been trying to carve out a new niche as a reliever that can, perhaps, also provide some function in the field and on the bases. He turned in a reasonably promising showing in the upper minors with the Dodgers organization in 2016, working to a 3.83 ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 49 1/3 innings.

Heading into the 2017 campaign, Schafer joined the Cardinals organization in hopes of competing for a MLB job. But he ultimately required a primary repair procedure to address damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, costing him the entire season.

Schafer returned to the Cards for camp this spring, but never got much of a chance on the majors side. He was tagged for seven earned runs and recorded just two outs in his two Grapefruit League appearances.

Josh Osich has not been impressive so far. Likely unrelated but an inexpensive low risk depth movie by the Giants.

Osich is just a stopgap until Will Smith comes off the DL next month.

I’m calmer than you. Small sample size I know. But I’m staying and finishing my coffee.

If they do….. They could rebuild pretty quick with all of that trade bait, keep Panik and trade the rest. Lots of playoff teams could use Bum, Posey, and many more Giants players even if they are older and short term guys. Teams want to win now. I think the people up top have a plan if it all goes south. I could be wrong. I am, often. I have zero MLB GM experience. 😉

Factoid: During Matt Cain’s perfect game, he came closest to getting a hit, but his new teammate Blanco robbed him with a diving catch.

Not really a teammate because no way this guy ever sees the mound at the MLB level.

Have you? Bad game Sunday…mostly for Gomez, who’ll probably be gone when they add a fifth starter.

But other 4 games, bullpen has thrown 13.1 innings, allowed ZERO runs on 3 hits.

Ur not a true gmenfan, just a fan who got on the bandwagon in 2010. Ur ignorant.

Ahhh this is cool, forgot Schafer was converting to a pitcher. Wish him well, still remember his first mlb at bat being a homerun!
