Blue Jays Claim Preston Guilmet, Designate Deck McGuire

By Connor Byrne | June 9, 2018 at 2:36pm CDT

The Blue Jays have claimed right-hander Preston Guilmet off waivers from the Cardinals, per an announcement from Toronto. To make room for Guilmet, the Jays designated righty Deck McGuire for assignment.

This will be Guilmet’s second stint with the Toronto organization, as he previously tossed 14 1/3 innings with its Triple-A affiliate in 2015. The 30-year-old has combined for 260 1/3 innings at Triple-A with multiple franchises and logged a 2.39 ERA with 10.0 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9. However, Guilmet hasn’t been anywhere near that successful across 25 major league frames (9.36 ERA, 7.92 K/9, 3.24 BB/9) with the Indians, Orioles, Brewers, Rays and Cardinals. He made a pair of appearances with St. Louis this week and yielded five earned runs in two innings, leading the Redbirds to designate him on Thursday.

The Jays selected McGuire 10th overall in the 2010 draft, and he has finally seen his first action with the club this season, allowing six earned runs in 8 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old – who, like Guilmet, is in his second stint with the Jays – also garnered a bit of experience in the majors with the Reds last season. Most of his work has come in the upper levels of the minors, including 334 frames at Triple-A, where he has registered a 4.99 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.

Guilmet was drafted by the Indians several years ago, and now Atkins and Shapiro are in Toronto. I can’t say this surprises me.

These waiver moves never cease to surprise me. Obviously this isn’t a “bad” move, there’s no risk, but how do all the high upside lottery tickets like Gregorio typically clear and Quad-A guys like Guilmet draw claims

I mean is that a great example, not trying to be snide, but? But he was out of options and was popped for PEDs in July. Add that to the fact that he really wasn’t great in AAA in 16/17 at a time where teams pretty much have their rosters somewhat figured out. AAAA guys generally are there for depth. Idk maybe if you’re a rebuilding that has innings to offer and he intrigues you might take a chance, but I’m not sure that’s a great example. If he had options I’d bet there would have some interest.

Then again you might not be referencing Joan.

        That’s a fair point.

The Toronto Blue Jays continue use the Card’s cast offs as provision for the Jays organization.

Ahh all clubs do this when they don’t have enough good players. Sometimes lightining is caught in a bottle.

In the big picture the Jays are going nowhere in 2018 or ’19 or ’20 unless a change in organizational philosophy [or executive personnel] miraculously happens.

You’re sure reaching to make a point a waiver claim. Every team does this, the sky is not falling.

Lol. Sorry if it seems all about me, that is not my intention. My intention is to show that the Blue Jay marketing media and executive RaRa is just that, trash.

We shouldn’t be buying into Shapiro’s or Atkins “we want to be competative” garbage especially when there are educated fans like many here on MLBTR
that can scout and see the truth of this team’s real future.

I want to see the Jays really compete not just say so to try to sell tickets. We have only seen that with two GM’s: Pat Gillick and Alex Anthopoulous.

Trust me folks, the Jays are years away from competing unless they blow it up, which they should have done[and yes I said that then] after the last playoff run. They thought they were going to re;load with MOrales, and Pearce then Grichuk and DIaz and Garcia. What a joke.

The Jays need to sell as many players as they can for near ready assets before their value drops even more, like Donaldson or Estrada or Garcia or Osuna etc etc etc.

You forgot Granderson in the reload. At $5 mil.

I imagine the Blue Jays are eventually going to sell, but I don’t really see the rush. Continue to create frameworks for trades and keep giving your pro scouting team time to get looks at guys. I bet you’ll see Granderson/Pearce/Happ/Donaldson traded.

Shapiro led teams have won one division in 18 years. Enjoy the bleak, Toronto.
