Tigers Select Casey Mize With First Overall Draft Pick

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2018 at 6:11pm CDT

The Tigers have selected right-hander Casey Mize with the first overall pick of the 2018 Rule 4 amateur draft. The 21-year-old hurler just wrapped up his junior year at Auburn University.

Mize was not even drafted out of high school, so it has been a meteoric rise over his three years in college. Then again, he hasn’t exactly needed to streak up the draft boards over the months leading up to the draft. Instead, Mize planted himself at the top early on and has remained a clear consensus 1-1 option ever since.

Now a polished starter who’s said to possess three swing-and-miss offerings, Mize just turned in a massive season for Auburn. In 16 outings, he threw 109 2/3 innings of 2.95 ERA ball, racking up a whopping 151 strikeouts while issuing only a dozen walks.

The expectation is that Mize will move quickly through the Detroit farm. He’s certainly an interesting addition to a system that features several promising starters among its best-graded prospects. If all goes as hoped, perhaps the rebuilding organization won’t have to wait long for the arrival of a wave of pitching talent at the MLB level.

Mize hasn’t quite wrapped up his Auburn career. They advanced to the Super Regionals.

Those are pretty massive numbers for 16 innings pitched.

Come on now, let us dream and drool over a pitcher with 85 K/9. You’d have to strike out over 9 batters an inning, meaning you’d be playing with an exhaustingly terrible defense, or you’d throw your arm off. Hell, even if you only threw 3 IP each start, you’d likely still top 100 pitches, which is Chatwood-level laboring. I don’t think one could even put up these numbers in a video game, though now I want to know the record for most K/9 in a video game season.

I knew what it meant. I was pointing out the typo with a little humor. Think a little.

    Please explain what this means
“In 16 innings, he threw 109 2/3 innings of 2.95 ERA ball, racking up a whopping 151 strikeouts while issuing only a dozen walks.”

Did you really have a hard time figuring out the typo?

Tigers made the right pick. Now they have a load of right handed power arms in their system and will have a deadly rotation in a few years

also allows a little FO to be even more open with a Fulmer trade.

Fulmer is destine to be a yankee. With a trade involving Clint Frazier and whoever else the Tigers want in a package

No thanks on Fulmer. He hasn’t been very good since his rookie season. Frazier + should bring back more than Fulmer.

No thanks on Frazier. The Yankees will have to give up a lot more than that for the Tigers ace.

With Mize on the fast track, I would choose to have both Mize and Fulmer in my rotation. Why drag out the rebuild longer than needed?

No doubt Diller. Can see it happening. The Yankees have the tools to deal for Fulmer. He needs to get on track to maximize his value. Once he does it makes total sense. When the Tigers are preparing to contend again Fulmer will be expensive.

Extremely high floor. May not have the ceiling of some #1 college arms like Price or Strasburg, but elite command with 3 above average MLB pitches should carry him a long way.

Not sold on this guy as a top starter. Very stiff, straight-up mechanics. Max effort pitcher. I see him being a reliever down the road.

    1. Tigers draft strategy must hinge on sign-ability. After the 1st two rounds, they reached.
    2. Do not expect Mize to be Verlander. Expect more like a Porcello (who did win a Cy Young).

Tigers are NOT going to trade Fulmer at the deadline unless they are blown away. There are arms out there more established for a playoff run that will get most of the attention. Fulmer is having a down year and the Yankees already made a underwhelming offer before the season and with his season not going well, they are not going to up the offer unless they get shut out of other targets. My feeling is that Fulmer gets moved next year at the trading deadline IF he has a good first half. Forget about wins and losses its his ERA over 4 that gets team worried.
