With several players hitting the disabled list this afternoon, we’ll round them up in this post:
- The Mariners announced that starter Felix Hernandez will hit the DL owing to lower back tightness. It seems the idea is to afford him a longer rest by lining up the placement with the coming All-Star break, as Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets. Reliever Nick Rumbelow and infielder Gordon Beckham will head onto the active roster, with outfielder John Andreoli being optioned out. Hopefully for the M’s, a bit of a respite will allow Hernandez to bounce back in the second half. It has been a frustrating season to this point, as he has allowed 5.13 earned runs per nine over 105 1/3 innings.
- Likewise, the Nationals announced that closer Sean Doolittle is hitting the shelf with left toe inflammation. His placement is retroactive to July 7th, meaning he’ll be eligible to return immediately after the break. The roster will get two fresh arms in Wander Suero and Austin Voth, while fellow right-hander Jefry Rodriguez was optioned after his start yesterday. As for Doolittle, it had been hoped that he would be able to return to action, but the team can ill afford an un-utilized roster spot with a tired relief corps. The club has other capable late-inning arms to turn to, though obviously the fervent hope will be that this placement will stave off any more concerning health matters.
- Indians righty Josh Tomlin is going to the DL with a right hamstring strain, per another announcement. He’ll be replaced by Adam Plutko, who has seen seven games (including six starts) of action in the majors this year. Tomlin has struggled both before and after being bumped from the rotation. Though he hasn’t been hit quite as hard in a relief capacity, he’s still allowing a .256/.294/.538 slash to opposing hitters while working from the bullpen. The 33-year-old owns a 6.98 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 — and an unhealthy 3.9 homers per nine — over 49 total innings this year.
Time to drop Hernandez. Hes done
Tomlin has a bad hammy? Sore neck from watching homers fly out of the park. Time to move on from him.
Yeah, the hammy injury announcement made me laugh.
Love the phantom injuries!
They should put him on the DL for ulcers, those that he causes everybody else watching him pitch.
Felix on the DL will actually help the M’s. Time to look for some SP.
5 of the last 6 starts he’s given up 3 runs or less, his breaking pitches have looked a lot better. Had a 3.71 ERA in June, so let’s see if that continues
Honestly Felix has pitched well with the exception of the first couple innings. He’s made us come from behind too many times and that’s resulted in loses. He needs to be stronger out of the gate. Honestly if he doesn’t turn it around I see him not being a Mariner much longer.
Ryan divish said he doesn’t expect him to be in the playoff rotation, if we make it. I wouldn’t doubt it, but it’d be such a sad ending for a genuinely great story.
I doubt they leave him off the playoff roster, if they make it. That would be a cruel, cruel blow after all he has given them over the years, and never having been to the playoffs
I didn’t read that story but what it says is not in the rotation meaning a SP he will be in the BP. If he pitches the way he has the last few starts he could. Barring injury right now I would say Paxton Gonzalez and Leake. Also depending if we get a pitcher at or before the deadline. The problem I see with Felix coming out of the BP is he struggles in the first inning. Maybe if he knows he is going one or two innings he will be better.
I mean what it says from what mmarinersfan wrote. If he quoted it correctly.
I wouldn’t put my money on Leake being in a playoff rotation. He’s having a schizo season. Looked awful tonight… granted the second inning and the rest of the game could’ve gone better had Gordon not made the error.
Got to find a replacement for Doolittle in the ASG
Left toe inflammation. Oh boy
Dating myself here … “I think that we owe a big round of applause to our newest, bestest buddy, and big toe… Sergeant Hulka.”
Lighten up, Francis.
wonder who will replace him on all star roster.
Long past time to DFA Tomlin. He sucks
He’s owed too much money for them to just cut ties, but agree his time is up
$3 mil for the year means he’s only due 1/2 that now. Chump change, Pass him through waivers and send him to Columbus.
3 mill isn’t too much money
Any amount is too much for a small market team like the Indians. That said, the biggest issue with Tomlin isn’t so much the money as Tito’s undying loyalty to him.
The last thing CLE wants to do is DFA Tomlin, and they can stash him a while on the DL, but it’s only delaying the inevitable. 3.9 HR allowed per 9 just doesn’t play anywhere but the Home Run Derby. Tribe is gonna be in this same position with Kipnis before we know it.
Tito needs to make him the same Napoli/Giambi offer of mercy. Retire, then join the big league team as a “consultant”.
I agree, although I doubt Tomlin would be ready to retire just yet
I’ve been saying for a month. Tell him your putting him on the 60 day and go get an arm.
