Giants Place Jeff Samardzija On DL

By Connor Byrne | July 15, 2018 at 1:13pm CDT

The Giants have placed right-hander Jeff Samardzija on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his pitching shoulder, Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group was among those to report. Infielder Kelby Tomlinson is up from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

This is the third DL stint of the season and the second on account of shoulder troubles for Samardzija, who was known for his durability entering the year. The 33-year-old came into 2018 fresh off five straight seasons of 200-plus innings. He has only thrown 44 2/3 at the halfway point this year, though, and hasn’t been effective when healthy enough to take the hill.

Samardzija has pitched to a 6.25 ERA/5.42 FIP thus far, thanks in part to poor strikeout and walk rates (6.04 K/9, 5.24 BB/9), a 29.9 percent groundball mark and a recent stark decline in velocity. All of those numbers represent personal-worst figures for Samardzija, who holds a 4.17 ERA/3.86 FIP with 8.1 K/9, 2.72 BB/9 and a 43.8 percent grounder rate for his career.

Samardzija is in the third season of a five-year, $80MM contract, a deal the Giants awarded him when he was a quality mid-rotation starter. Now, with a desire to stay under the $197MM competitive-tax threshold, they’d surely like to get rid of his money. The club has reportedly made him available, in fact, but his 2018 performance, newfound injury troubles and contract combine to make him immovable.

Despite Samardzija’s woes this year, the Giants sit a respectable 50-47, three games out of a wild-card spot and 3 1/2 behind the NL West-leading Dodgers. If Samardzija misses significant time after the All-Star break, it seems likely San Francisco will slot Derek Holland back into its rotation behind Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Andrew Suarez and Dereck Rodriguez.

Zito beat a tough Reds team on the road in a must win. He also out pitched Verlander in the WS. Hahaha

It was the worst contract in Giants history. That is, until the 2012 postseason. Then he earned every penny of it.

There was a rumor that he was being made available. Given his contract they could still move him after the all star break by putting him on waivers. He will probably clear waivers because of how much he is owed so think SF would need to kick in a prospect to move him to save salary.

He is owed 47 million and has a bum shoulder.

Unless the prospect you’re “kicking in” is the next Mickey Mantle hes the Giant problem for three years

Negative. He’s not an Austin Jackson one year payoff. He’s owed 2 more years after this season and is an expensive bottom rotation piece with serious injury flags.

You would have to add a top 100 prospect to even get a team to think about taking Shark

His next start was scheduled to be in 11 days anyway. Would rather have Holland thought. Didn’t think I would say that at the beginning of this year.

Also, you gotta love the picture.

Holland has been a pleasant surprise, don’t get me wrong, but it seems that he struggles way too much on the road. Want to hear from another Giants fan, would you rather have Holland or Stratton? Or even Blach now that he’s turned things around?

Holland. He had the best stuff. Stratton had a lot of luck early in the year, think he had a sub 3 era going into may and then his luck ran out, Blach only pitches well against the dodgers for some reason, his era is over 5 against all other teams

Absolutely Holland. Stratton got figured out and is now pitching more in line with his career minor league numbers. He has a great curve, but if it’s not working for him, he’s screwed. Blach is the classic junkballing control guy. There’s just too much Jekyll and Hyde in him.

Should be moved to the pen when he’s healthy. He seems sharp for a few batters but completely whack for others. This should finally convince the Giants to ride the young rotation. Bum, Cueto, Suarez, Rodriguez, Stratton doesn’t look as bad as it might have in the beginning of the season. Of course, Bochy will ride Holland though.

The kids cant pitch that many innings this year. I doubt they could pitch until game #162 and playoffs? Their arms would already haven fallen off. IMO.

      Thoughts?

it’s too bad because he really is pitching smarter this year – he isn’t giving up the same kind of hard contact he is compared to previous years where he just picked the wrong time and location to challenge hitters in hitters counts. he has always been almost a good pitcher – like if he pitched smarter rather than harder he could get over that hump.

The Giants won their WS with their young core and then went old Yankee mentality and overspent on players while having a poor farm system. When I hear Giants fans talking bad about the Yankees, I sort of chuckle now.
